An Online Newsletter Showcasing Our Programs for the Month of October, 2022!
|
|
This is the last month of our Railroad exhibition and to further commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Japanese rail, we will be organizing two online lectures, the first by John Tedford on contemporary rail in Japan and the second by Shinobu Kobayashi on Ekiben or railway bento, in collaboration with Japan National Tourism Organization and JR-East. If you haven't already done so, make sure to RSVP at the event listing below.
With the start of fall also comes the start of the Japan Foundation's programs for Japanese language and Arts & Culture. For Japanese language education, we will cover the details in the Japanese language education update below.
For Japanese Arts & Culture programs, we support those in the 13 states West of the Rocky Mountains. If you are in a state east of the Rockies, you will need to get your information through our New York Office. They also handle grants related to Japanese studies. For Arts & Culture, we will offer support of exhibitions abroad, translation/publication, and the fellowship for research on Japanese art. The museum infrastructure support program has not been announced yet. There is a new online application portal this year so you will need to apply through there.
Lastly, we will also be continuing our trio of wellness events this month with monthly themes so make sure to join us on Facebook every Wednesday at 12:30PM PT.

Japanese Language Education Update 106
|
|
As mentioned in the introduction, this month is the start of the Japan Foundation's Japanese language programs organized by our Headquarters in Tokyo as well as our Japanese language institutes in Urawa and Kansai. We are also accepting applications for the J-LEAP program that is co-administrated by the Laurasian Institute.
Successful J-LEAP Lead Teachers will have the opportunity to host an Assistant Teacher at their school for up to two years. We provide all the financial support for the AT during this time and work with the Laurasian Institute to provide training and guidance. This is a good program to bring in a native Japanese perspective into your classroom.
Since the start of Covid, we also started offering online programs and this year they will cover two themes including teaching Japanese characters and assessment of language learning. Both themes start in June of 2023 with five sessions each.
Our Japanese language institute in Kansai also offer two programs mostly for researchers and graduate students but librarians, and museum curators can also apply. The Program for Sepcialists in Cultural and Academic Fields provides Japanese language training for those who need it to complete their research. There is a two month program over the winter and a longer five month program from Summer through fall. We currently have on participant on that program now and we will hear back from him when he returns in December.
If you are looking for information on our Japanese language grant programs, we will have more information about that in early 2023!
