JFLA EXHIBITION
Dancing Extraordinaire: Japanese Entertainers under the Pandemic
Through February 25th
Admission Free
The entertainment world was dealt a big blow by the pandemic. One after another, theaters were forced to either postpone or outright cancel performances. Beginning in July 2020, freelance photographers (Arisa Kasai, Shizuka Minami and Maiko Miyagawa) took portraits of 18 groups of artists over a period of about 7 months guided by their concept of “capturing the ‘present’ during the pandemic, characterized by the way in which the subjects’ routines meshed with the demands of the moment”. The photographers captured these artists’ emotions and their performances that would have otherwise never come to light, but were forged in a state of emergency which rekindled their passions for the stage.

Japanese Language Education Update 109
With the new year comes a few changes here at JFLA. In the past, you may have worked with Nakai san if you were applying for our Salary Assistance or Project Grant and starting the last week of January, she will be moving into an administrative role. There will be a shake up with the Japanese language team with Mike Penny taking over the Salary Assistance and Project Grants, Thomas Lin with the Training Programs, and Megan Murata, who joined us last month will be in charge of Learner Event and Teaching Material Purchase Grant. Ian Ostoya will now be in charge of Advocacy!

This month we are continuing with the J-LEAP Assistant Teacher reports and we are also featuring a report from Elijiah Sprints, a Japanese teacher from Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon, who participated in our Japanese teacher training program in Urawa this past summer. It has been two years since we have been able to organize this program due to Covid and Sprints sensei is one of the first to participate. We just closed application for the 2023/24 program and hope to be sending additional teachers in the upcoming fiscal year.

We wish all the teachers nation wide a Happy New Year! and will be supporting your efforts during the second half of the 2022/23 school year.
