Careers in Chiropractic:
Improving Quality of Life
for Animals

Just like with humans, animal chiropractic focuses on keeping an animal’s spine and central nervous system healthy. Helping animals live a better quality of life with easier movement and restored function is rewarding and meaningful for the animal chiropractor.

Professional opportunities are plentiful for animal chiropractors. Many are human chiropractors who have added pet services to their practice. Some chiropractors specialize in a particular category (house pets, exotics, horses, livestock), or they may work in a veterinary clinic that offers chiropractic care along with traditional services. Other chiropractors may focus on a niche, such as show or performance animals, working with their patients at event locations such as dog shows, rodeos and racetracks.

Dr. Maria McElwee, a 2014 Sherman College graduate, has combined her two passions, chiropractic and animals, into her professional career as owner of Critter Chiropractic in Pennsylvania. “I had an interest in working with animals through chiropractic, even though at Sherman I focused on people,” Dr. McElwee explained. As graduation approached, she began exploring options for additional training in animal chiropractic to make her dream a reality.

“It is the best feeling in the world when I am able to give their body what it needs to start the healing process,” Dr. McElwee says of her work. The reward for her is seeing animals relax and “get the joy and brightness in their eyes again.”

Ambassador Spotlight:
Charles Tucker from Rock Hill, SC
Ambassador Program President

Why Sherman: Being from South Carolina, and knowing an awesome doctor who is an alumnus, and attending Showcase Sherman Weekend in 2016, I knew that Sherman was the right choice for me.

From the warm feeling I received from Ambassadors and the family feel from staff and administration, I knew I had to come to Sherman.

Why Chiropractic: For me, chiropractic is more than just correcting subluxations. It’s about giving people a better option in life by increasing their quality of life and allowing them to do what matters most to them. Chiropractic is Life!

Student Ambassadors Celebrate
at Quarterly Dinner

Student Ambassadors shared a great time of fellowship and celebrated the group’s hard work during its recent quarterly dinner, hosted by Ambassador Program Manager Emily Wood; food was provided by Groucho’s Deli of Spartanburg.

New student ambassadors were inducted and quarterly awards were given. Letitia Smith received the Showcase Star Award. Charles Tucker and Angelica Lopez both received the Ambassador of the Quarter Award. In addition, the group had a unique opportunity to learn to be better communicators and Ambassadors through specialized training with Rico Peña, the college’s consultant in strategic resource and tactical training.
Students, Faculty Serve as Buddies, Coaches for Carolina Miracle League

Embracing the belief that "every child deserves a chance to play baseball," Sherman College partners each season with Carolina Miracle League to sponsor a team. Quite a few Sherman students and faculty members serve as buddies and coaches in the league. Buddies support players during the games by running bases, retrieving balls and providing other assistance as needed.

The fall season begins soon, and fans will be sure to enjoy appearances by Sherman mascot Larry the Lion, as well as many students and faculty members. Check out photos from several spring games on Carolina Miracle League’s page here and here, and on the Sherman College Facebook page.
Sherman College to Host Symposium Focused on Human-Animal Bond

In anticipation of the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in nearby Tryon, NC, Sherman College will host its first annual Spinal Health Symposium on Thursday, September 20, with a special focus on the human-animal bond. The program, titled “Spartanburg, Adjusted,” will include a public reception and private dinner event featuring certified animal chiropractor Dr. Jay Komarek (pictured) and American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) certified veterinarians Drs. Amy Hayek and Bill Ormston.

“Any living being with a spine and nervous system can benefit from chiropractic care,” said Sherman College President Dr. Edwin Cordero. “So it is only natural for us to share the beneficial role of chiropractic in caring for horses and other animals.” Read more about this event on our blog .
Did You Know? Sherman College Helps Students Thrive

Sherman College's Thrive program includes tutoring, mentoring and success tracking as a way to put academic safeguards in place throughout the program and keep students on track academically. This program focuses on the success and overall well-being of Sherman College students.

Thanks to this program, the college has seen students on academic probation work their way back into good standing. Students have requested academic support to perform their best, not just “pass the course.” And students radiate confidence after learning new, effective ways to study. The Thrive program’s main goal is to continuously improve student retention and persistence to graduation. Sherman College aims to retain students not only to avoid dismissal, but to ensure they feel supported and to know that the college truly cares about their success.
