The Picture That Made Us - Nathan Thomas

Founder of Black Print Studios

"This photo takes me back to a much simpler time.

It was taken while I was a student at Seneca College, long before Black Print Studios became what it is today. Looking at it now reminds me of how far the journey has come and how important it is to take chances on people and especially on yourself.

When I was starting out, there were people who believed in me before I had a track record, before I had a business plan, and before I knew exactly where I was headed. They gave me opportunities, advice, and encouragement when I needed it most. Today, one of the most rewarding parts of my journey is being able to do the same for others.

What I love most about this photo is how genuine it feels. There was no pressure outside of trying to fit in and do well in class, no deadlines outside of school assignments, no expectations beyond show up and do the work, just a group of people enjoying the moment and figuring out life as they went. In many ways, entrepreneurship is exactly that. It’s learning as you go,

embracing uncertainty and trusting yourself enough to take the next step even when you don’t have all the answers.

Black Print Studios began when I was 19 years old as a college assignment. At the time, I never imagined it would grow into a business that serves entrepreneurs, organizations, and communities across Ontario. What started as a project quickly became a passion, and eventually a career.

Today, Black Print Studios helps bring ideas to life through print, design, signage, apparel, and branding solutions. But for me, it’s always been about more than ink on paper. It’s about helping people build something they’re proud of. Whether it’s a startup launching its first product, a community organization hosting an event, or a student chasing a dream, being part of that

journey is what drives me.

The road hasn’t always been perfect. There have been long nights, mistakes, setbacks, and moments where quitting would have been the easier option. But every challenge taught me something valuable and helped shape both the business and the person I’ve become.

Networking through the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre and programs like the Summer and Starter Company programs played an important role in that growth. They provided support, guidance, and resources that helped turn an idea into a sustainable business.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. I didn’t have a perfect plan, and in the beginning, I actually barely had a plan at all.

What I did have was a willingness to start, to learn, and to keep moving forward. This photo reminds me that growth starts with taking a chance. I’m grateful I took that chance on myself, and I’m even more grateful that today I have the opportunity to help others do the same."

Competition Bureau Warns Businesses

The Competition Bureau is reminding businesses that illegal practices like bid-rigging and price-fixing in public contracts can lead to serious consequences—including criminal charges, heavy fines, and reputational damage.

As public procurement opportunities grow, so does the risk of collusion between competitors. Under the Competition Act, agreements such as bid-rigging, market allocation, and wage-fixing are criminal offences, with penalties that can include fines, lawsuits, debarment from future contracts, and even prison sentences of up to 14 years.

Businesses are encouraged to compete independently, follow compliance best practices, and ensure employees understand how to avoid collusion risks when bidding.
