Shelley Galloway's Best in Show floral arrangement "Laser Tag" from this year's Show of Summer.

Dear Friends,
Do you remember the Lottery tagline, "You Gotta Play to Win!"?
KGC played at Show of Summer and, wow!, did she win!
Thank you to everyone who entered and, in lotto-speak, increased our odds of winning. And thank you to all members who supported our efforts, whether with words of encouragement, pitching in or just being a friend to an entrant. Thank you to Lyn Little, coach to the Floral Club Challenge Team and to some of the individual entrants. You are a national treasure, Lyn! The Club's moral support and encouragement was tremendous and truly drove this incredibly successful endeavor.
Special congratulations are in order for our NEW MEMBERS, Helen Balch, Kelly Chestnut, Kendra Cunningham, Catherine Hurtgen, Wendy Irwin, Cathie Murphy, Kim Piekos, Carla Stephens, Anita Tyson, Charlotte Walsh and Chris Wiedrich on their gorgeous Second Place-Red Ribbon installation. I overheard many compliments from both other participants and the public.
Some of our New Members did even more! Chris Wiedrich took a First Place-Blue Ribbon for her "Birthday Party" piñata entry (with Marty Shaw taking Second!), and Kendra Cunningham and her partner Stacey DeLuca took Second Place for their Candyland "Board Game" entry. Brava!
Congratulations to the KGC Floral Design Club Challenge Team, led by Terri Lorenz and "housed" by Kirsten Rider. You went down the rabbit hole and found a Red Ribbon (Second Place), too! A very special thanks to Tony Lorenz and Harold Rider for their engineering, carpentry and transportation skills. They were tremendous sports about the whole thing. Thank you to Andy Shaw and Bill Macdonald for figuring out how to take apart the rabbit hole on Sunday evening.
Speaking of tremendous sports, Bill Blackwell, Dick Dodson, and Ted Read were very generous with their time and support of Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor in our Horticulture Club Challenge. Thank you, gentlemen! Heather Blackwell, Jeanne Daniel, Joan Dodson, Leslie North and Carole Read were awarded an Honorable Mention for their fun and whimsical entry.
And there's more! Congratulations to Cheryl Anderson for her First Place Blue Ribbon in Photography and the Show of Summer Novice Award. Yes, you read that correctly! The Novice Award for the entire Show! Plus a Blue Ribbon. Kudos, Cheryl! Jeanne Daniel also received a Novice Award in Horticulture for her charming "Hula Hoop" entry, as well as a First Place Blue Ribbon.
Jeanne did double duty, partnering with Nancy Kurz and cruising to a Second Place finish in the "Rainy Day With a Friend" class. I guess you could say that Jeanne pulled off a Show of Summer hat trick if you include the Second Place received by her grandchildren in the Children's Challenge. Well done, Jeanne!
During Show of Summer weekend, one of our members quipped to me, "Of course we did well. We have Shelley!" And Shelley Galloway outdid herself this time, receiving the Margaret Clover Symonds Medal for her "Rainy Day with a Friend" entry -- and a well deserved first place. The Judge's Comments read "Zap/flash tag, you're it! Sensational!!" Plus, Best In Show for the entire Show of Summer! All well deserved, Shelley. Congratulations.
But wait! There's more! Photography Division Co-Chairs Shelley and Stacey DeLuca received a Judge's Commendation for the Photography Schedule, Show Committee Members (that would be Shelley & Stacey!) and Staging. Congratulations, Shelley and Stacey! Stephanie Keehn received a First Place and Sara Morgan received a Second Place in two different Photography Classes. Our extraordinary Horticulture exploits included a bevy of First Place awards to Kitty Kirby and Shelley Galloway (and Jeanne's above), as well as Sue Cozzens awards.
There's lots, lots more in this newsletter. So many members entered, helped and won ribbons. Please scroll down for all of the wonderful news!!! It was a very exciting show for KGC!
Of course, there a few other items I'd like to bring to your attention. First, welcome new Board Members. Thank you to the 2016-17 Board for the "heavy lifting" it did. We accomplished a great deal in a very short time and have received compliments from the Zone XI and GCA Leadership for our efforts.
Please send in your dues! Katherine Buehler is taking them at 118 Oxford Road, Kenilworth 60043. Please check off which committees you want to join this year. That list is on the back side of the Dues Notice.
Click here for a copy of the Dues Notice. As you know, the Club cannot include your contact information in the 2017-18 Yearbook if you have not paid your dues. Please don't delay!
Finally, the Board decided that--after hosting a Zone XI meeting and helping host a GCA Annual Meeting, plus Show of Summer -- it was time to have some good old KGC fun! Kelly Chestnut, our 2017-18 Program Chair has fun (but still educational!) programs in store for us! Our first program will be at Ware Garden on Wednesday, July 19
th at 9:30 a.m. Our delightful tour guides and program speakers will be Sara Morgan and Barbi Paine. Assistant Program Chair Terri "I Don't Think She Ever Sleeps" Lorenz has organized the logistics and hostesses, and Floral Chair Marty Shaw and her committee will have a fun, informal floral offering. So don't miss the in-town field trip! See you there!
Happy Summer! It's time for a tall, cool iced tea!
Always,

Cheryl Anderson's Show of Summer Novice Award and First Place Winner in Division III, Photography, Class 8, Chasing Butterflies. The Judge's Comments relating to the Show of Summer Novice Award were extraordinary: "Luminescent and evocative of a summer day!" Which pretty much sums up the Schedule and the Show. Congratulations, Cheryl!

KGC had a wonderful showing at Show of Summer! In fact, the Show of Summer Co-Chairs, Susan Green, Ladd Mengel and Molly Stephan, complimented our Club, its entries, support and enthusiasm. SOS Floral Design Chairs Libby Cummings and Terry Zengeler lauded our many entries, excellence and enthusiasm. I
KGC was represented in three of the four competitive divisions. Much to the chagrin of the Botanical Arts Chairs, we did not field an entry. But, our focus on the other three categories yielded huge dividends! KGC Floral Chair Terri Lorenz's, KGC Horticulture Chair and Co-Chair Heather Blackwell and Joan Dodson's workshops really helped build our members' confidence. As you will see by the results listed below, the study time was really worth it! KGC could not have competed without the quiet but generous advice and counsel of Lyn Little, Nancy Kurz and Carole Read. Your candid, kind, considerate and spot-on advice helped so many of our members refine their entries.
Thank you to all of you who entered, attended and supported the Show and Preview Party, volunteered or just shared words of encouragement with our entrants. A special thank you to the KGC members who served on the SOS Committee: Sue Cozzens, Elizabeth Drake, Joan Senko, Shelley Galloway, Stacey DeLuca, Terri Lorenz and Heather Blackwell. Your planning and organization made it a great show!

July 2017 Update
Ware Garden is flourishing! Thanks to all the members who have worked over the past 4 weeks, we have made great progress weeding, deadheading and pruning in the fountain area and in the native area. Nature's Perspective installed our new plants along the south border: Aralia racemosa (Spikenard),
Goatsbeard, Aster 'October skies', Blue Flag Iris, Bee Balm, Prairie Dropseed and Pennsylvania Sedge. In addition, two (2) Green Giant Arborvitae were planted along the north fence; these replace two evergreens that died.
Our committee now includes Helen Balch as a co-chair. Helen, along with Beth Glass, who is on our committee, is testing an alternate day/time to accommodate our members. Watch for an email from SignUp Genius announcing Tuesday from 4:30-6:30 as a time to work at Ware Garden. This is in addition to our Mondays and Saturdays which are already available on the SignUp.
Seventeen members have worked at Ware at this writing (June 27); we think that's great considering all the hard work our membership put in for SOS. There are plenty of spaces open for working a couple of hours from July-October. We hope to see you there. Also, our July 19 meeting at 9:30 a.m. will be at Ware Garden. At that time, we can point out our new plants, relate a bit of the history of Ware Garden and talk about plans for the future.

Honors for Barbi Paine and Sara Morgan
The Kenilworth Park District honored Sara Morgan and Barbi Paine at its June 15, 2017 Board Meeting, reading a Proclamation thanking them for their many years of dedicated work at Ware Garden. Please click on the link to read the full text. Karin Balsbaugh, Kelly Chestnut, Jeanne Daniel, Elizabeth Dugan, Shelley Galloway, Kitty Kirby, Julia Kyle, and Lenore Macdonald witnessed the momentous event. Thank you to Park Board President Heidi Higgins and Executive Director Johnathan Kiwala and to the KPD Board for this great honor. Congratulations, Sara and Barbi!

A note from Tina Rice..
I was weeding at Ware recently and couldn't help observing and overhearing this grandfather, mom and toddler enjoying the garden as they walked through it on their way to the beach. Theo Young, the two year old, apparently had made this walk with his "Pa" (long time Kenilworth resident Mike Busby) before as he was excited to point out the pineapple atop the fountain to his mom (Andrea Busby) and of course loved the water. Hearing their enjoyment of the garden and its beauty captured perfectly for me why I enjoy being a part of KGC and helping this membership give back to our community.
Initial plantings on the northern path have reseeded and are ready to bloom... stop by and check it out in the coming weeks! And while you're admiring, take a few extra minutes and help us keep the path weed free! A little work from many hands produces amazing results!

The summer planting for the Magnolia Garden is complete! With help and thanks to Judy Petrie for her planting and great weeding skills, moral support from Carla Stephens and ground prep from our sons Jack and Tom, the garden was planted on June 3. We followed the color scheme and plant suggestions from Kenilworth Beautification for the pots and garden planting.
Drive by or rest on one of the benchs and see the white geranium, vinca maculata, begonia, sweet potato vine, lantana and macho ferns. If you are ever so inclined, feel free to do some deadheading. The Kenilworth Park District has offered to water when they water the fountain garden, but if it ever looks dry, there is a hose behind the garden and the thirsty plants will thank you.
Happy Summer!

Weed and Feed: Once again the annual weeding in Mahoney Park under the direction of Valerie Foradas and potluck lunch at Lois Stanley's was held on June 5, 2017. As usual, it was wonderful, a bit windy as you may remember on that day, but as we sat in the "summer house" no one noticed and enjoyed the friendship.
Before lunch, we toasted Lois with champagne, she was presented with a group gift of an antique magnifying glass and letter opener set. But that was not all, she was also gifted with a tree that will be planted in her name in the newly refurbished Maggi Park. The exact location of of where the tree will be planted will be determined at a later date. Lois' shepherding of Beautification will be greatly missed to say the least. Anyone willing to take over her duties please contact Lois.
Recognition: Sara Morgan and Barbi Paine were honored at the Kenilworth Park District Board meeting on June 15, 2017 for their tireless commitment to Ware Garden and Kenilworth.
S
olicitation
letter: The letter was sent out to all the residents of Kenilworth and I understand to others as well. I will have the total amount raised at a later date.

I suppose the most devastating news in the conservation arena this month was the President's recent decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord for global warming.
Where does the GCA stand on Climate Change?
Here are excerpts from their published position on the issue.
CLIMATE CHANGE
The Garden Club of America recognizes that global climate change is affecting the natural world, our economies, national security, and human health. Rapid loss of biodiversity, species extinction, ocean acidification, sea level rise, droughts, floods, storms, along with threats to clean air, to clean water, and the health of our national parks are all risks we face if we do not address the human activities that create global warming. Because individual and collective action can modify the course of climate change, The Garden Club of America is committed to educating members and communities about its causes and about constructive responses to them. The Garden Club of America is particularly concerned about the influence of climate change on biodiversity. Native vegetation is the matrix that sustains plant biodiversity and supports wildlife and ecosystem services. Therefore, The Garden Club of America supports federal, state, and local legislation and policy that addresses the following:
FUNDING
● Developing and implementing proactive strategies to protect biodiversity, especially at-risk species, to safeguard habitat, and to preserve options for future restoration.
● Identifying and addressing both the disruptions of co-involved relationships (such as those between plants and pollinators) and the increased incidence of disease and invasive species.
LEGISLATION, REGULATION, AND PRIVATE INITIATIVES
● International, federal, state and local greenhouse gas reduction legislation and regulations that reflect the social cost of carbon and have their basis in peer-reviewed science.
● Individual, corporate, and community initiatives to develop green infrastructure.
● Initiatives to support sustainable forest and wilderness areas (including National Parks), as these open lands sequester carbon, help ensure clean air, and protect watersheds.
● Accelerated promotion of renewable energy and advanced battery storage, as well as promotion of energy efficiency measures in the building and transportation sectors.
● Initiatives to protect, conserve, and maintain water quality and quantity, to prevent stormwater runoff, and to safeguard oceans.
Sometimes these issues can seem overwhelming and beyond our influence. The reality is, everything begins at home. Here are some personal strategies to consider for you and your family.
We all can do better to protect our wonderful planet Earth!

Why did you join KGC?
I have always loved flowers, gardening, photography and meeting women who also love those hobbies, so welcomed the opportunity to join KGC!
What is your KGC area of interest?
My KGC area of interest is floral design. Creating and tending floral arrangements is very relaxing and satisfying. No matter how unskillful I am, I can't go wrong as my materials are so beautiful.
Who is your mentor (inside or outside of KGC)?
Lenore introduced me to KGC and has been a wonderful mentor as has Diane Phillips, Mary Glerum and Beth Glass. My thanks to them!
What are your interests outside of KGC?
Outside of KGC, I enjoy tennis, reading and planning trips with my husband and family.
Tell us something we may not know about you?
My favorite flower is lily of the valley which also happens to be my birth month flower (May). One of my favorite memories of my January wedding is that I had lilies of the valley in my bouquet because one of my mother's friends forced them in her basement.

A special request from the Zone XI Flower Show Chair --
I am writing in my role as Chairman of this year's Zone Meeting Flower Show. It takes place on October 10 and 11, coinciding, of course, with the Zone Meeting dates. The entry process begins on the afternoon of October 9 to be completed by 11 am on October 10. (Refer to schedule for complete timetable.)
The schedule for the show, Glaciers to Gardens, is on the GCA website. It is a GCA Zone show consisting of divisions for Floral Design, Horticulture and Photography. There will also be a Conservation Exhibit.
When presenting our schedule for approval by the GCA National Flower Show Committee Chairman, it was requested that it be a requirement for each club in Zone XI to enter at least one exhibit in each division. We have included this in the schedule requirements with the exception of floral design where, at our urging, were allowed to say "strongly encouraged". We strongly encourage beautiful flower arrangements from across the zone!
Last winter when the show schedule was first posted online, Cato Schley, then Zone Flower Show Rep sent this notification to each of your flower show chairs. So I hope this does not come as a complete surprise. Polly Beal, Green Tree GC, is our new FS Rep.
As your clubs are now firming up plans for attendees at the Zone Meeting, please bear the necessity for flower show participation in mind. Registration is open and I encourage action for entering the show soon. Kindly forward this information to your flower show, floral design, horticulture and photography chairs.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you so much for your participation. Zone XI will present an outstanding flower show, I am certain!
With my very best to all,
Gail Hodges
