MWT Cymru, as part of the Wales Tourism Alliance and the Mid Wales Tourism Forum, recently played a key role in shaping discussions at the Wales Visitor Economy Forum. With vital insights gathered from members, the issues raised at the meeting, attended by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Dawn Bowden MS, encapsulated the critical challenges faced by the tourism sector.
Steve Hughson, Chair of the Mid Wales Tourism Forum and Suzy Davies, Chair of the Wales Tourism Alliance, outlined the sector's struggles, including reduced profits due to cost increases, decreased sales of holiday homes and booking rates for touring parks and glamping, alongside increases in admin costs and the issues around recruitment.
Steve Hughson stressed the challenges businesses are facing due to high energy costs, and made a strong case for reviewing the 182-day threshold, which some self-catering businesses may find challenging to meet.
The proposed introduction of a Visitor Levy, and Accommodation Licensing scheme were also discussed. Concerns were raised that the views of the sector were not being fully taken into account by policy makers.
The Welsh Government Barometer Survey should be adapted to capture the impact on the tourism sector of policy changes. Broader issues raised included changes to the school year, the 20mph speed limit, and its impact on visitor experience.
Recognising that 90% of businesses in Mid Wales are microbusinesses which are facing challenges resulting from the cost of living crisis, Steve expressed optimism that concerns had been heard, citing, "I feel that we got our points across and were particularly listened to by the Minister and Officials."
