Your park rangers have documented over 200 sea turtle nests and over 1,000 shorebird nests at Cape Hatteras National Seashore so far! Meet Your Ranger: Rebekah Smith

Our Meet Your Ranger series introduces you to the many amazing people who support your OBX national parks every day!  We'd like you introduce you to Rebekah Smith, an interpretive ranger at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Rebekah spends her working hours sharing the stories of the Freedmen's Colony and the "Lost" Colony with park visitors. She's a huge fan of the Atlanta Falcons, the Oxford comma, hiking, and nature photography! We recently worked with Rebekah to celebrate Juneteenth - check out her Freedmen's Colony ranger program on our YouTube channel!

Rarest of the Rare: Conservation of the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle

If you’ve spent time in the Outer Banks, you may have encountered a dog with a heart-shaped nose, stylish sunglasses, a bone collar and a shiny red surfboard.  Well, he’s not a real dog, he’s SURF DOG, the fictional star of “SURF DOG’S BEACH SAFETY TIPS,” a book for all ages written and illustrated by husband-and-wife team and Hatteras Island residents, Kevin McCabe and Kim Mosher.  Kevin is a veteran surfer, waterman and woodworker and Kim is a well-known color pencil artist who illustrated the internationally popular children’s book, “Pelican and Pelicant.”
