With lots of summer travel, gatherings and events, we’re seeing a seasonal surge of COVID in our communities. This is important - especially if you live with or care for someone who is older or is immuno-compromised.

COVID is always changing, and this year we’re seeing lots of new strains. As of July 2024, the most common variants are KP.2 and KP.3.

The good news is that the newest COVID vaccines this fall will be targeting the KP.2 variant. So by getting an updated vaccine, you can boost your immunity and prevent severe disease.

Recommended vaccines for different ages

From Dr. Bonni Stahl

CHA Broadway Care Center

When I talk to patients, they often ask “Should I get a COVID vaccine now or wait until the fall?” My advice is usually as follows:

If you’re sick or immunocompromised and haven’t had an updated vaccine or booster, it’s best to get something now rather than be unprotected.

For healthier folks who have trips planned, or didn't get an updated vaccine this past year, it’s a great idea to get a vaccine before travel. This will help protect you from getting COVID on vacation, which is never fun.

If you are exposed to COVID or having symptoms, you should take a COVID test right away and again in 48 hours. If the test is positive, contact your healthcare provider (regardless of whether you have symptoms).

If you do have symptoms, stay home until you are fever free and feeling better for at least 24 hours. After this, you should still wear a mask for at least 5 days, especially in crowded indoor spaces. And avoid contact with folks who may be vulnerable to severe disease, regardless of your test results.

Lastly, while the different COVID variants may cause different symptoms (some mild, some severe) the risk of severe illness is always lower if you are vaccinated.

I highly recommend everyone get an updated COVID vaccine this fall at the latest. The new COVID vaccines are VERY safe, and are the best way to protect your health!

When You Call CHA...

You’ve given us a lot of feedback about our phone systems. So we’re working to improve the way we handle your calls.

In June, we launched a system-wide call center for Primary Care that helps make sure we answer your calls and get them to the right place. We also created a Nurse Advice Line to provide advice about your symptoms over the phone or with a video visit.

You may also notice a new phone menu. When you call, the options are:

For Appointments, or if you're not feeling well, press 1

For Medication Refills, press 2

For Referrals, press 3

All other calls, stay on the line

If you don’t speak English, please hold for an operator. They’ll connect an Interpreter to the call to make sure you get help in your language.

With nearly 400,000 phone calls a year to our clinics, it’s hard to get it right every time. But we're moving in the right direction. Thanks for your patience!
