When I talk to patients, they often ask “Should I get a COVID vaccine now or wait until the fall?” My advice is usually as follows:
If you’re sick or immunocompromised and haven’t had an updated vaccine or booster, it’s best to get something now rather than be unprotected.
For healthier folks who have trips planned, or didn't get an updated vaccine this past year, it’s a great idea to get a vaccine before travel. This will help protect you from getting COVID on vacation, which is never fun.
If you are exposed to COVID or having symptoms, you should take a COVID test right away and again in 48 hours. If the test is positive, contact your healthcare provider (regardless of whether you have symptoms).
If you do have symptoms, stay home until you are fever free and feeling better for at least 24 hours. After this, you should still wear a mask for at least 5 days, especially in crowded indoor spaces. And avoid contact with folks who may be vulnerable to severe disease, regardless of your test results.
Lastly, while the different COVID variants may cause different symptoms (some mild, some severe) the risk of severe illness is always lower if you are vaccinated.
I highly recommend everyone get an updated COVID vaccine this fall at the latest. The new COVID vaccines are VERY safe, and are the best way to protect your health!
