Happiness Must Happen

By Kristin Ashley

As the wheel of the year moves halfway through the summer season, one of my favorite events with SENG is in full view—our annual community conference—and with it my cherished opportunity to remember the joys of being gifted and the pleasure of reconnecting with friends old and new from our wide, wonderous family across the globe. This year, we celebrated the adventurous nature of our gifted life, moored in the beautiful Berkeley harbors with views that allowed us to witness the cyclical rise and fall of the sun on the western coast. During our time together, I was encouraged to bear witness to the cycles of ebb and flow, crest and trough, peak and valley that have dotted my own quest to discover, and ultimately appreciate, myself.

SENG in the Community

The 2024 SENG Annual Community Conference in Berkeley, CA was a resounding success, bringing together a diverse group of individuals dedicated to supporting the emotional needs of the gifted community. This year’s conference featured an array of programming, including keynotes, workshops, and breakout sessions led by experts in the field. Highlights included keynote presentations by Paula Prober, who offered insights into the struggles and triumphs of gifted adults and Frank Worrell, who delivered an inspiring address on the importance of nurturing talent with the right mix of challenge, support and timing. Other sessions covered topics such as creativity, emotional regulation and the unique challenges faced by gifted individuals in various educational settings.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors, whose generous support made this event possible. Special thanks to Qualia School, our Tote Bag & Kids Programming Sponsor and Summit Center, our Lanyard and Badge Sponsor. We also appreciate the Morning Meditation Sponsors: Jennifer Larrabee and Villanova University Mission & Ministry. Additionally, we are grateful to our Event Sponsors: Dabrowski Center, GHF: Gifted Homeschoolers Forum, Riverside Insights and The Davidson Institute. Their contributions enabled us to create an inclusive and resource-rich environment for all attendees, ensuring that our conference thrives and makes a positive impact.

Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the value of networking opportunities and the quality of the sessions. One attendee remarked, "This conference can empower gifted individuals by providing a safe environment to connect and share experiences." Another shared, "Truly helped to understand gifted better." Such testimonials underscore the importance of these gatherings in fostering a supportive community. SENG remains committed to hosting these conferences to bring together individuals, families and professionals dedicated to the emotional well-being of the gifted, offering a space for learning, growth and connection.
