Sport History Spotlight: Jane Marshall Dillon
The Jane Marshall Dillon Award recognizes equestrians of all professions who have devoted their lives to teaching and mentoring riders beginning their education in the hunter/jumper discipline. The winner’s name is recorded on the Jane Marshall Dillon Perpetual Trophy, donated by Mrs. Dillon’s son, Randy, and 1984 U.S. Olympic show jumping double gold medalist Joe Fargis, who got his riding start with Mrs. Dillon.

Mrs. Dillon began riding at age three; attended George Washington University, where she joined the riding club; and married in 1941. She began teaching her niece, nephew and a few of their friends in 1950, and soon her Junior Equitation School in Vienna, Virginia, hosted as many as 200 students at a time with a long waiting list. Mrs. Dillon emphasized correct equitation, allowing riders to develop a natural feel, and cultivated solid horsemanship in all her pupils, who took care of their own horses. Riding with Mrs. Dillon included navigating the farm’s rolling hills and natural jumps, foxhunting, riding bareback, and learning all about horses and their care. “If you got good enough,” Joe Fargis recalled, “you’d get a horse and go to a horse show." Olympian Kathy Kusner and 2017 Jane Marshall Dillon Award recipient Donna Martin were also students of Mrs. Dillon. She is the author of the classic books School for Young Riders (1958) and Form over Fences (1961).
