In This Issue - June 2018 Newsletter
A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT / CEO

A Note from the President/CEO

June promises to be as busy and productive as May, but before we jump right into a new month, let's review May. The Chamber's Golf Tournament was another successful event, and the entire recap of winners and more winners is further in this newsletter. Three ribbon cuttings this month included Capt. Butchers, Beach Side Dog Spa and Mrs. G's, there's new business everywhere! Our lunch speaker Florida State Representative Erin Grall provided us with a thorough recap of legislative events in Tallahassee, and Mike Natalie, our lunch sponsor informed about the 25th Annual Bluewater Open, a milestone for the Exchange Club of Sebastian. We will also finish the 19th Annual Concerts in the Park series, and have an official contract with the City of Sebastian for another five years of entertaining in the park! We said good bye to Joe Griffin, the retired City Manager, and said hello to the new City Manager Paul Carlisle. Committee meetings and board meetings rounded out the month, and there's more on tap for June.

Please take a look at the list of nominees for our Board of Directors election process. Every year our Nomination Committee scans the list of members to recruit new leadership for the coming year. When a candidate says yes, they are saying yes to more than a meeting every other month. It's a commitment to lead the Chamber, to provide input to staff, to create policies that are in sync with our mission statement and to give time and efforts to support the membership base. This year's list of nominees is included and reflects the changing faces of our membership. Next month the ballots will be available for you to choose and you will have a stellar list of members. It won't be an easy choice!

Before the end of the month Penny Chandler, the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce President will retire, after twenty three years of service. Eighteen years ago, Penny sent me a plant, and the card said, "Welcome to the Chamber world, let's work together".   And we did. Our relationship was defined by the word "collaborative", and we recognized that it was in the best interest of our business community that the Chambers worked together. Through the years we have notched many success stories, and the Chamber world will miss her insight, strategic thinking and professionalism. We all wish her good luck in her future!

June brings us the summertime pace, less visitors, more time for planning, learning and taking a break. But our Chamber calendar is full of activities to keep you connected. We start with breakfast with the Sebastian Historical Society. Since it is the beginning of hurricane season, Bart Gaetjens, with FPL will speak to us at lunch and we will gather at St Lucie Tire and Battery for a business and pleasure. We will announce the dates of our summer workshops on Social Media in a Chamber Intel, and we will also launch a special project that is sure to please all of the Sebastian Area businesses.

Enjoy the weekend, try some Lionfish, and have a prosperous month!

CHAMBER PROJECTS
27th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament - That's a wrap!

Cool coastal breezes and warm Florida sunshine made for a truly spectacular day for the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce 27th Annual Golf Tournament. Over 100 golfers participated on the morning of May 5th at the  Sebastian Municipal Golf Course and enjoyed a day on the links (Cinco de Mayo style) followed by lunch and awards ceremony at  Tiki Bar & Grill.

A Hole-in-One challenge sponsored by  Nightingale Private Care provided the chance for players to take home a $10,000 cash prize along with other on-course opportunities to win Golf Clubs, a Flat Screen TV, Air Fare and more.

Additional challenges included a Longest Drive contest (Men's and Women's Division) as well as a Closest to the Pin challenge (Men's and Women's Division). Each winner had their choice of a donated foursome from surrounding golf courses.

Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive Winners:
  • Women's Closest to the Pin & Longest Drive: Kathy McDaniel
  • Men's Closest to the Pin: D. Munzing
  • Men's Longest Drive: R. Flescher

Along the way, players were also greeted by a number of T-Box Sponsors who took advantage of the beautiful morning to promote their businesses on the course. Players were also kept hydrated with bloody mary and screwdriver drinks, compliments of Beverage Sponsor -  White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery.

After a great day of golf, players congregated at the Tiki Bar & Grill to enjoy a fiesta style lunch followed by the awards ceremony. There were over $2000 in raffle prizes to give away in addition to the ever-popular Cooler of Cheer and Wine Basket. Master of Ceremonies was  County Commissioner Peter O'Bryan.

The Coveted Traveling Pelican Trophy flew to a new nesting spot.  Ameron Pest Control came in as this year's  1st Place Sponsor team with a total score of 59. Tournament 1st place team, with a score of 61 was Woody's BBQ, 2nd place team with a score of 63 was Tiki Bar & Grill, and 3rd place team with a score of 64 was Kroegel Produce.

Not only did the best scoring teams get recognized, but so did the "not-so-good" scoring teams! Highest Score title was awarded to the lively group of golfers from  Sebastian River Medical Center. These folks were encouraged to take up a new hobby and were given paddle boarding certificates from  Capt Hirams Resort along with sun hats, sunscreen, sunglasses and a beach towel.

This annual golf tournament is one of the Chamber's most important fundraisers of the year, raising funds that are dedicated to underwriting the Chamber's efforts in supporting the business community, promoting tourism and working on economic development. A big thanks to all those who sponsored, participated and volunteered!

National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE)

The National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) is dedicated to protecting the earned benefits of current and retired federal civil servants. These include retirement compensation and health insurance benefits. This is accomplished by lobbying in Washington and by local grass roots activism. The NARFE national office is located in Washington D.C. and local chapters can be found in every state of the U.S.. There are currently over 220,000 members, most of whom are retirees.

NARFE is an excellent resource for information on current events affecting federal retirees. A monthly magazine provides the latest news of interest and answers reader's questions. In addition Service Officers are available to help with issues affecting federal retirees.

Our local Barefoot Bay Chapter (#2255) meets every third Wednesday (October-May) at Vic's Restaurant (1140 US 1, Sebastian) at 1:00 PM. Meetings are informal and offer an excellent means of making new friends while sharing work experiences with others in our federal family. There are presently over 100 members in our local chapter. We feature guest speakers who discuss interesting subjects such as elder law, medical issues, government operations, and crime and safety.

You don't need to be a member to attend a meeting. Please join us for lunch and a meeting. Contact Mike for more information.

President: John Weider
Vice-President: Mike Ferrato (772-778-0585)

Major League Fishing World Championship

In February, Indian River County hosted a group of 75 people who were here for a week to compete in and film and produce the Major League Fishing World Championship.  This was a collaborative effort between Indian River County, the City of Fellsmere, the City of Sebastian, the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce, the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce and the Treasure Coast Sports Commission. The MLF World Championship is Major League Fishing's most prestigious competition. This premier, top secret, first of it's kind event featured the top 12 anglers who fished our hottest bass fishing, freshwater lakes (they fished a different lake each day and the anglers didn't find out where they were fishing until they arrived at the ramp). In addition to the fishing tournament footage, there will be a 1-2 minute feature about Indian River County. I had the pleasure of taking one of their cameramen around the Sebastian River Area to highlight other activities and attractions in the area outside of our awesome bass fishing! This 6-Episode Tournament Series will air on CBS Network Television in June & July. The first episode will air Saturday, June 23rd at 2 p.m. on CBS. Marsh Landing Restaurant will be hosting a Watch Party for the first episode. Stay tuned for more details! We are so excited for the airing of this awesome series and the wonderful exposure that it will give Indian River County!

JUNE TOURISM SPOTLIGHT

Chamber Newsletter - Tourism Spotlight - June 2018

About Kayaks River Rentals
25 Airport Drive West
Sebastian, Florida 32958

When About Storage opened in 2007 to provide mini-storage and parking for boats and RVs, owner Steve Philipson realized he had a unique location and opportunity to serve area residents and visitors in another way. Located across Roseland Road from Dale Wimbrow Park and its boat ramp, About Kayaks River Rentals became the only kayak rental on the St. Sebastian River, one of Florida's last remaining natural waterways, abundant with wildlife.

Earth-Friendly Adventures

Kayaking is an easy, eco-friendly way to immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of nature, without motors disturbing the environment or propellers harming the river's many inhabitants, including manatees. We specialize in two- to three-hour self-guided tours featuring sit-inside and sit-on-top single and tandem kayaks known for stability and ease of use. We provide the kayaks, paddles, life vests, personal instructions, and transportation to your choice of three launch sites. Most beginners find paddling easy and fun, going downstream with the typically gentle current.

Subtropical Eco-System and Wildlife

The river bends through thick vegetation comprised of subtropical plants, mangroves, oaks, cypress, and palms, and is a freshwater tributary of the famed, biologically diverse Indian River Lagoon. Along the way you're likely to see many species of water fowl and birds of prey including osprey, owls, sandhill cranes, herons, egrets, vultures, and bald eagles. Turtles, alligators, and wild boar may be sunning themselves. Otters, raccoons, an occasional bobcat and, of course, manatees appear at different times of year. At the end of your trip downriver, we will meet you at Wimbrow Park, just across from our office. We help people get back in touch with Nature and love seeing kayakers return, relaxed and elated from the experience.

Exploring the wild St. Sebastian River is an adventure in Nature,
creating memories that last a lifetime.
