Lantzville Community Facilities

• BBQ Fundraiser to support the Canada Post Community Foundation for Children and Youth on June 4^th from 11:00am-1:00pm at 7217 Lantzville Road.

City of Nanaimo

• Invasive Plant Month continues this month with the Invasive Plant Zone taking place on Saturday, June 1^st, 10:00am-2:00pm at Bowen Park.
• New Play and Learn Options (monthly early years programs) begin this fall with registration beginning on Wednesday, June 5^th. There is a variety of programs for children 18 months to three years that run from September 2024 to June 2025. To learn more, phone 250.756.5200 or check out recreation.nanaimo.ca
• The 2024 Concerts in the Park series is underway with free performances taking place throughout the summer. Check out www.nanaimo.ca/parks-recreation-culture/parks-events/concertsinthepark for details on the entertainers, times and locations.
• The water parks are open daily from 9:00am-8:00pm throughout the summer. The four locations are Departure Bay, Deverill Square Park, Harewood Centennial Park and Mansfield Park
• Lifeguards will be patrolling First Beach at Westwood Lake Park daily from 11:30am-5:30pm starting June 28^th until September 2^nd.
• There are still many summer camps available for registration. See the Spring and Summer Activity Guide at www.nanaimo.ca/ActivityGuide/

Regional District of Nanaimo

• RDN offers a variety of fitness classes at a price of $6.00 to $10.00 a session. Ongoing pro-rated registration is available if space allows. Most of the fitness classes offer a drop-in option at $12.00 a session. Pick up your drop-in pass today at either Ravensong Aquatic Centre or Oceanside Place Arena. www.bit.ly/rdnfitness
• RDN Camps: build friendships, skills and memories that last a lifetime. There is still room in She Kicks Soccer Camp, Go Girls Sports Camp, Basketball Camp, Volleyball Camp and Camp Notch in Nanoose. Register today at www.rdn.bc.ca/recreation

There are several ways to pay your property taxes:

• Online or Telephone Banking: Available at most major Canadian financial institutions. YOUR PROPERTY TAX ACCOUNT NUMBER IS: Jurisdiction & Roll Number all together with no spaces or decimal (should be 11 digits total)
• Mail a Cheque: to District of Lantzville, PO Box 100 Lantzville, BC V0R 2H0. Payment must be received by the due date. Do not mail cash.
• Mail Drop Box or In Person: Drop your cheque off in the mail drop box at Municipal Hall or come in and pay by cheque, debit, or cash.
• Mortgage Company: If your mortgage company pays property taxes on your behalf, contact your financial institution to confirm the remittance amount.
• Pre-Authorized Payment Plan: The District of Lantzville offers plans to pre-pay your 2025 property taxes (2024 taxes must be paid in full prior to enrollment)T
• Tax Deferment: Eligible residential property owners can apply online for property tax deferment or renewal at www.gov.bc.ca/propertytaxdeferment.

Apply For Your Homeowner Grant  

You may qualify for a homeowner grant. The homeowner grant reduces the amount of property taxes you pay each year on your principal residence. Eligibility requirements for all available grants can be found at: www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant or by phone at 1.888.355.2700.

Minetown Days: Save the Date

The Seaside Community Society is excited to announce that the annual Minetown Day event will be taking place in Huddlestone Park on August 17, 2024.

Expanded Organics Program

The Regional District of Nanaimo recently expanded their organics program to include leaves, grass and light yard trimmings. Below are a set of guidelines for Curbside Collection as written by the Regional District of Nanaimo:

• Roll your carts out between 5:00am-8:00am on your scheduled day of collection.
• Place your carts as close to the roadway as possible.
• Leave at least 1 meter of clearance between carts and any obstacles such as parked cars, poles, fire hydrants, etc.
• Leave 3 meters of clearance above the carts.
• All material must be placed in the cart with the lid completely closed.
• Make sure the arrows on the cart lid are pointing toward the street.
• Please leave the lid in the unlocked position on the cart.
• Do NOT set carts out the night before your collection day.

Council's Corner - Summer Updates

1)        A design based on resident input for landscaping in Phase II of the Village Core Improvement Project has been approved, and landscaping will begin soon. Thank you to everyone who participated in the public feedback process. More input will be gathered for design of the new Legion Plaza.

2)        There is some news for bikers. New bike racks have been installed at Oar Road and Harper Road ends. Similar bike racks at Eby Road end are in progress, and details are being determined for bike racks in the Village Core.

3)        The “greening up” of the Lavender and Jacks beach road ends, with resident input, are two more approved projects.

4)        All the legal requirements for Pierce Woods Marine Park are being implemented, and hopefully the park will soon open to the public.

5)        We also look forward to the authorized multi-use path from Leland to Huddlestone. Upon completion of this initial section, Council will be able to consider next steps, such as continuing the path along the front of Huddlestone Park and Costin Hall to connect to the pedestrian crossing at School Road.

6)        Numerous grant applications have been submitted and we are hopeful for positive news.

7)        Council submitted a resolution for the AGM of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) advocating an update to provincial legislation, allowing development cost charges to include large capital expenses for firefighting, such as fire trucks. The resolution was endorsed by the Board of AVICC and passed unanimously as part of the endorsed block. We anticipate it will now make its way to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) to potentially become official advocacy policy.

Council is Seeking Feedback

Council is seeking diverse, creative and open-ended feedback on the following:

Legion Plaza: The brick plaza in front of the Legion 257 building is available for unique and creative ideas that will benefit the community, while preserving the area as a walking and gathering place. This may include creative and unique features/planters/benches/street furniture/sculptures/lighting and other community-oriented elements.
