Food lovers, rejoice! We are officially ramping up for San Leandro Restaurant Week, and the excitement is already building.

We have a wonderful lineup of local restaurants signed up, and they are busy crafting mouth-watering specials you won’t want to miss. This year, we are taking our marketing to the next level—our regional outreach is inviting our Contra Costa and Tri-Valley neighbors, as well as our close East Bay neighbors, to come discover San Leandro's vibrant dining scene.

If you own a restaurant, café, or eatery in town, this is your absolute final opportunity to sign up and be included in our massive marketing campaign.

We want to make this as easy as possible for you to get more customers through your doors:

• Participating in Restaurant Week is 100% free for your business.
• All it takes is a "YES": Simply send us a quick note saying, "YES, we want to participate!"

Business License Tax Proposal Sent Back to Staff - BUT It’s NOT Over

Thanks to your engagement, the City Council sent the proposal back to city staff for more work rather than moving it forward as it was presented.

Staff have been requested to return in July (likely at the first or second meeting of the month) with updates to the proposed rate schedule. While Mayor Gonzalez and Council Member Bowen expressed no support for the measure, the rest of the council agreed to have staff refine the proposal because they still intend to try to get it on the November ballot.

The council correctly identified several major flaws in the current proposal that align with the Chamber’s concerns:



• Unfair and Excessive Rates: The council saw that the proposed schedule placed an excessive, unfair burden on certain sectors (like manufacturing and retail) while actually lowering rates for others.

• Not Enough Time for Mitigations: There has simply not been enough time to fully flesh out adjustments or relief for the specific industries being hit hardest by this model.

• Businesses Carrying the Burden: Several council members expressed concern that businesses are currently the only group being asked to pitch in to solve the city's budget woes, rather than the broader community.



Although the City Council identified these major issues, they are still pushing to rush this onto the November ballot.

We are already working on ways to bring an even bigger crowd to our next showcase so more of you can experience what these businesses have to offer.

The Office of Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (CA-12) is now accepting applications for the Fall 2026 District Office Internship Program!

Applications are due by Sunday, July 5^th at 11:59 PM EST. 

Intern applicants must be 18 years of age or older. 

Internship Program will tentatively run from September 1^st to December 4th.

Interns will work part-time, 12 hours per week, receive an hourly-wage, and be expected to be in-person at the Downtown Oakland District Office for the duration of the program.

Ideal candidates are organized and passionate undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent graduates with an interest in public service and social justice. Applicants should be self-starters with excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
