June is a great month!  It is full of reasons to celebrate – graduations, weddings, end of the school year, and many other momentous occasions.  It’s a great time of the year – the kickoff of the summer season and opportunities to make many memories with friends and family.  Among the many things to celebrate during Pride Month is diversity: diversity of thought, diversity of color and ethnicity, diversity of lifestyle, diversity of sexual orientation/identity, and many others.  I’d like to add one more to that – neurodiversity.

SENG celebrates Pride Month by honoring the intersection of giftedness and LGBTQ+ identities. Gifted LGBTQ+ individuals often face unique challenges, including accelerated cognitive development, which can lead to early identity exploration. The overlap between queerness and neurodiversity is significant, with higher rates of LGBTQ+ identification among neurodiverse individuals. Understanding and supporting these intersections is crucial for parents, educators and clinicians to provide affirming environments that validate all aspects of identity and foster healthy development​. Exemplifying our June theme of “Solidarity”, SENG board member Shaunne McKinley and current SENG president Adam Laningham presented at the Arizona Alliance of Black School Educators Conference on Juneteenth.

Panel guests and hosts across five time zones came together for the first joint SENG & Mensa Foundation collaboration. They engaged and shared ideas related to social, cultural, and developmental influences on the conceptualization of intelligence and giftedness.
