New to TTC's Pro Staff:  Andrew Pritchard

Andrew Pritchard started in May as our newest Associate Pro on the TTC Teaching Staff.  Andrew is another home-grown product, growing up playing at TTC and Crescent Valley High School, and taking lessons from Hunter at Tennis West and later Timberhill!  After a successful high school career, Andrew played #1 on the OSU club team for one year, and #1 on the UO club team for 3 years.  Andrew is still a strong competitor, earning a #1 ranking in the 5.0 NTRP division in 2010, and continues to be a force in the Open division tournament in the Pacific Northwest, reaching his best sectional ranking of #4 in 2014.
Andrew has coached high school tennis for six years, spending the past five leading the Crescent Valley HS girls team.  He has worked for several years as an instructor at Nike Tennis Camps, and served as a teaching pro at Albany Tennis Club.  He loves working with high performance juniors and adults, but is excited to work with anyone and everyone now that he is back "home" at Timberhill.  We're excited to have him as a part of our Teaching Staff.   Welcome, Andrew!

SHOES!!

We have always been able to order tennis shoes (still can, almost any brand!), but now we are stocking the newest in tennis footwear from Head--the men's and women's models of the Revolt Pro.  This is a great-looking shoe with a 6-month sole guarantee,a and is very supportive and performance-oriented.   We have a wide range of sizes to try on for both men and women, so come in and take a pair for a spin.  Oh, by the way, our retail price is $20 LESS than Tennis Warehouse!

NEW TO TTC:  EXERCISE BIKE!

Nothing is better for your muscles and joints than a quick warmup before playing. And now, TTC has an easy way to do that!  We have a new stationary bike parked near the grandstand off court 6. A five or ten minute warmup on the bike will help your body ease into the rigors of tennis. This LifeCycle will also track your heart rate and calories burned if you want to take it for a complete workout. It offers different workout modes, like hill-climbing or an easy 'flat' ride.
However you use it, your knees will thank you! Try it out!

GRIPS

As more warm days start to appear, it might be time to take a look at the condition of your racquet's grip.  Is is getting slippery when you sweat or looking worn?  Come in for an assessment, and we can replace that worn grip with a new one or an overgrip in about 5 minutes!

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:  HEAD PWR SERIES RACKETS

For several years, Head has released their racquets in several different "silos"--a similar frame idea and technology that is scaled from a model that would suit a long, fast swing to one that would suit a shorter, less powerful swing.  This way, a player who likes the idea of playing with Djokovic's racquet, but doesn't necessarily have the swings to support it, can use a model of that racquet that is suited for his or her style of play.  The "game improvement" versions of these racquet silos have been called the PWR series.  These frames are larger and wider and lighter, giving a player much more help with power and more maneuverability.  We have all of these racquets, and many of their less-powerful cousins, in the shop waiting for you to demo.

These racquets are offered in the following "silos":

Prestige PWR

This is from the Prestige silo, represented on tour by Carlos Berlocq, Tommy Haas, and Gilles Simon.  This racquet is a hit with the teaching pros:  it is light and powerful, but can handle a moderately fast swing.

Speed PWR

This is from the Speed silo, represented on tour by Novak Djokovic.  This racquet has a bit more power, and is fantastic for adding power to serve and hitting solid volleys.

Instinct PWR

This is from the Instinct silo, represented on tour by Maria Sharapova and Thomas Berdych.  This is the most powerful racquet of the bunch, and the 2015 model we have is the newest version of the best-selling game improvement racquet we've carried in years.

From The Clubhouse

June is always a month of transition here at Timberhill.  Our spring junior and adult classes and leagues finish up, our summer programs begin, and lesson court usage shifts from afternoons to mid-day.  We're also saying goodbye to Kyler Shields, our morning maintenance worker, and our long-time Assistant Pro Patrick Foley, as they both graduate from college and move to new jobs.

We say hello to a familiar face in Andrew Pritchard, who joins our TTC Teaching Staff as an Associate Professional.  Andrew will fill many roles, both on-court in our clinic programs and private lessons, as well as in the office and coordiating social events.  When you see him, please give him a warm welcome!

Another thing we are transitioning to is a new way of marketing the club!  We've been a bit more focused on getting information out through social media, and this summer you can look forward to seeing a TTC commercial when you're watching your favorite grand slam events on television (we're shooting for Wimbledon).  We've eliminated almost all of our traditional print ads in favor of opportunities like expos, community exposure in parades, etc., and connecting with other businesses.  Even if we don't see a huge return in the way of memberships, it will be a fresh and positive look for the club in the community.

Landscaping will be a focus for us this summer, as well.  We'll be removing the last of our "problem" trees early this month, and the Facilities Committee will be meeting to evaluate potential landscape solutions for the front of the club, both the driveway entrance and the parking lot surrounds.  Look for that work to begin later in the summer.

Enjoy these warmer days, and get out there and play as much as you can!

COLBY'S CORNER:  You CAN Teach an Old Dog New Tricks....

It's never too late to keep improving in this game!  I see a lot of players who think otherwise.  If you have played the same way your whole life you may think it's impossible to improve your game.  You might say things like, "My shots can never get any better because I'm past the age where I can make changes to my game."  Or, "My body is not as young as it once was."

The fact is you can improve at any age, but as always it takes time and persistence.  The same challenges that a beginner faces are the same challenges that a more seasoned player faces when trying to make changes and improvements in their game.  For example, making a grip change in order to gain more control on a forehand can be a lengthy process.  It takes time to learn the new grip, and more time practicing that grip with repetitions.  The difference is, a new player accepts that it will take time, and that they will miss many shots before they get it right.  But a veteran player finds it hard to accept missing a lot of shots in the short term in order to make significant improvements in the long run.  Even though those improvements can bump them up a level or two in ability.

In my years of coaching, I have never run into a player of any age that cannot make improvements in their game.  The challenge for me as a coach is not identifying what change is necessary for a player to make, but how to help them mentally accept the challenge and motivate them to work hard accomplishing the challenge during the entire process.  It becomes much more psychological coaching than tennis coaching at that point.  Adversity may come in many forms on the tennis court, but it is often the player's own mentality that ultimately holds them back from seeing vast improvement in their game.
