President's Letter
Happy Spring, Lovely Ladies of Kenilworth Garden Club!

It's here at last. Snowdrops are blooming, daffodils are smiling and the forsythia is unbelievable yellow! Finally!!

Speaking of blooming, so is KGC! Four new members have joined us this year, Kim Piekos, Cathie Murphy, Wendy Irwin, and Catherine Hurtgen. Please give them a warm welcome when you meet them. Thank you to Jeanne Daniel for shepherding the applications through the process and for welcoming them into the Club.

Spring brings one of our favorite things, too: the KGC Benefit. Beth Glass, Kathy Elmer and their committee have planned a lovely event for us and our guests. Please send in your r.s.v.p.'s as soon as you can. That way, things won't be delayed in the mail by Easter travel. The invitation should have found its way to your mailbox. Isn't it gorgeous? Just like Sybil's new book!

Thank you to our Benefit Angels! Polky Kibler, our Angel Chair, has received some donations. Please do be an "Angel" to the Club and benefit. The Chairs have told me that KGC Angels will go straight to heaven....or maybe I'm just making that up.....

It's going to be another fabulous benefit with a little surprise thrown in just for the fun of it!! See you at Glen View Club on Thursday, April 27 th.

We won't be having a club "meeting" this month, just the benefit program. Please watch your mailbox for your invitation to our Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 17 th at Beth Glass' home. We'll be voting on the budget and a slate (nominating is still at work, so "just say yes"!) and presenting GCA and Club awards.  I'm also happy to tell you that both the Ware Garden and Maggi/North Parks Storch Fund requests were approved by the Kenilworth Park District Board.

Easter is just around the corner. Wishing you a Happy Easter filled with family, friends, flowers and love.

Always,

Please join us for KGC's Annual Spring Benefit on April 27 th at the Glen View Club!
We are so excited to have one of America's foremost floral designers, Sybil Brooke Sylvester, as our speaker and featuring her debut book, fresh. Invitations were mailed in late March, so you should have one by now. We have a limited number of extra paper invitations - please contact Kathy Elmer at kelmos3@icloud.com or Beth Glass @coglasscomcast.net if you would like additional ones. We also have a digital PDF invitation that you can email friends; click here. In addition, if you would like to send your guests a digital PDF invitation without the reply card and pricing, click here.

If you haven't done so already, please consider making an Angel Donation--its not too late. No donation is too big or too small! Thank you to those who have already generously donated. Your help is so greatly appreciated and truly helps us host a successful event. Being successful means we can support our Club and its charitable and educational programs and projects.

Last but not least, Sybil's stunning new book, fresh, will be available for
pre-purchase or at the event. The cost is $50 and is well worth it - ask the committee members who have seen it (they are listed on the back of the invite). We will also have knockout centerpieces for sale.

We look forward to seeing you and your guests at the benefit!

WHAT'S NEW
March Meeting Recap

Our March program speaker, Susie Schreiber.  Photos by Shelley Galloway

The lion of March arrived just in time for our meeting at Ann Jones' house. After several inches of snow, we gathered at Ann's beautiful Lake Forest home for a conservation meeting. Our club welcomed Jean B. "Susie" Schreiber, Chairman of the Waukegan Harbor Citizens Advisory Group, to discuss Lake Michigan conversation and nearshore issues that face our community.

Susie began by introducing us to the Lake Michigan watershed and how our subwatersheds affect water and conservation throughout the Great Lakes and our own northshore. The Great Lakes, together, make up 20% of the world's fresh water. Each one of these lakes comprises its own share of watershed and pollution issues. The increase of manufacturing in the Waukegan Harbor area led to massive changes in area wetlands and ecosystems. Through her work with the Waukegan Harbor Citizens Advisory group, Susie has led a massive project of reform and decontamination. Once the largest area of PCB contamination in the world, the harbor and surrounding areas are now coming out of transition into a clean and safe harbor.

Susie also introduced us to the IJC (International Joint Commission) which combines leadership of both the U.S. and Canada to remediate many of the water quality issues that threaten the Great Lakes.   Initially started as a treaty to address water use and trade issues, it has evolved into a remarkable bi-national organization with hundreds of scientists and researchers working toward the common goal of clean Great Lakes.

We were so grateful to have Susie introduce us to so many organizations working toward a cleaner future. It was a great way for the KGC to welcome spring!

Zone XI Hort Update

CONSERVATION
NAL Conference
Karin Balsbaugh was our representative to the NAL Conference in Washington DC during the last week in February.   The following is her report about the event.   She agrees with me - this is a fabulous conference and if you have the slightest interest in Conservation, we strongly recommend that you consider attending one of these years. It's well worth the time!

Karin's Report:
How do I summarize three days of information into a quick understandable report when my head is still spinning? Ten delegates from Zone XI heard 33 speakers talk about environmental and conservation issues. Global warming is apparent in DC as the magnolia and cherry trees are blooming and there are no snow banks to climb. The 300+ GCA members who represented you at the conference are committed and organized women. We were reminded we were not there as conservatives, liberals, Republicans or Democrats but as by-partisan delegates.

Thursday, we met with Senators Durbin and Duckworth at a breakfast coffee in the Hart Building. Later we had short conferences with their aides. GCA emphasized this was the most critical mission of this conference. We were reminded that our voices, our phone calls, letters and emails are listened to. Elected officials want to know how their voters are thinking, what they support, which bills they are advocating. That is why we were inundated with information and inspired with power point presentations and videos. We need to be an informed electorate.

Over the next couple months, I will write up some articles for our newsletter that I hope you will find informative as they relates to GCA policy. GCA wants you to "STEP UP" and address the challenges of climate change.   I will also try and inform you how and when you could call or write the senators or congressmen endorsing an issue.

We can and should take a more active role in pushing an environmental agenda.
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

The Great Lakes
Our last club meeting on March 15th was a timely discussion with Susie Schreiber, Chairman of the Waukegan Harbor Citizens' Advisory Group. She talked about Lake Michigan and the work being done to preserve our local treasure.

Just a few days later the New York Times came out with this article about the Great Lakes:
And another article appeared in the Chicago Tribune:
I found, that when I Googled "Great Lakes news," there were dozens of articles about bi-partisan outrage over the cuts to the protection/cleanup funding for both the
Great Lakes and the Chesapeake Bay. I'm also getting regular updates from The
Alliance of the Great Lakes .   As someone who has always lived a stone's throw from our beloved Lake Michigan, this is an issue near and dear to my heart!! Sometimes I think people forget that the Great Lakes represents nearly 20% of the Earth's fresh water!

Earth Day 2017
I vividly remember the very first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. It activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. More than one billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

Activities are planned all over the Chicago area...
A few to consider:
and some things to discuss with your children: Celebrate Earth Day

we borrow it from our children."

BEAUTIFICATION

Good News for Kenilworth!  The Kenilworth Park District approved Beautification's request from the Storch Fund for $52,300 to renovate Maggi and North Park on the West side.  Kenilworth Garden Club's request for $6,000 from the Storch Fund, by a unanimous vote, was also granted for continued improvements to Ware Garden.   March 16, 2017 was a good night with these Kenilworth Park District decisions.  Both Beautification and KGC are grateful and thank the board.

The Landscape Architect company, Teska Associates, Inc., created the landscape plan for Maggi and North Park "using low curving berms covered in tall grasses, shrubs and trees, filtering the view of passing and parked cars...Trees, shrubs and perennials were selected for their extreme hardiness, drought tolerance and low maintenance, as well as beauty," in the Jens Jensen spirit and Kenilworth's naturalistic landscaping style.  The landscape contracting company, Grundstrom Landscape Maintenance, Inc., presented the lowest bid of four received.  They plan to start the project in mid-to-late April, 2017.  Both of these companies have "performed well" for Kenilworth as evidenced by the work they did in Centennial.

From the metal sign (made by Great Lakes Art Studio) to a tree, to an entire bed, there are opportunities for individuals, community groups and garden clubs to donate.  The result of such generosity would be a living legacy for all to enjoy.  "The new plantings will...create a unified visual identity connecting to the east side of Greenbay Road by using the same grasses and catmint installed 20 years ago by Beautification."

What to do?  We have all seen the huge Booster Station for the new water connection with Wilmette on the west side of Maggi Park at the curve formed with Ashland Avenue and Kenilworth Avenue.  Discussions are presently going on with the landscape architect and others about what exactly can be done to minimize its dominating presence.  I'll let you know when a decision has been made and what the proposed design will look like; shrubs, trees or structures, or a combination of these.   It will be interesting to see the camouflaging solution for such a challenge.

Fundraising letter design is being finalized.  Whichever design is settled on, it will be eye catching!

MEMBER NEWS

Member Spotlight

Cathie Murphy

Why did you join KGC?
I was invited by my friend, Lenore Macdonald, to two of her presentations on "The Horticulture of the Vine" at  KGC.  At the gatherings, I met many creative women who shared an interest in gardening and enjoyed wonderful friendships and camaraderie.  They piqued my interest in the educational and community service opportunities available in the Club.  I look forward to participating in the Club's outreach and volunteer programs and to playing a role in the Club's contribution to the North Shore community.

What is your KGC area of interest?
I am especially interested in learning more about perennial gardens.  A few years ago, I worked with my son on his Eagle Scout project to landscape a reflection garden at Sacred Heart Parish in Winnetka.  We did a lot of research to plan a self-sustaining garden with flowering seasonal plantings.  I look forward to opportunities with KGC to build on this experience.

Who is your mentor?
My father arranged beautiful floral centerpieces for dinner parties when I was growing up.  He had an eye for color and design, and he taught me how to use seasonal flowers and clippings from the property around our home to create fun and interesting centerpieces consistent with the style of the party.  As a member of KGC, I look forward to sharing my interest in flower arrangements.

What are your interests outside of KGC?
I am an active volunteer at my children's schools and on the North Shore.  When my children attended Sacred Heart School in Winnetka, I volunteered for many years and was PTO President and Chair of the annual parish fundraiser, Nite Lites.  When they attended Loyola Academy, I was active in the Mothers' Club, chairing several functions including the St. Nicholas Boutique.  I was also on the Board of Loyola Academy's annual fundraiser, The Ramble, for four years. In addition, I volunteer for Boy Scouts of Winnetka, Troop 20, as a merit badge counselor.  Together with John, my husband of 25 years, I enjoy golf, classical music and travel with my family.

Tell us something we may not know about you.
I grew up in a very large family in Park Ridge. With five brothers and sisters, five sets of in-laws and thirty four nieces and nephews, there is always something fun happening in our family!

What is your favorite flower?
My favorite flower is the gardenia with its velvet soft white flowers and beautiful fragrance.

What is your favorite season?
My favorite season is the Fall because of the richness of red, orange and yellow hues in the landscape.

What is your best gardening tool?
My favorite gardening tool is the wheelbarrow.  Ease of transportation expedites the gardening process!

Fresh & Fun
The Flower Chef

This is a fun book that simplifies flower arranging by providing recipes with ingredient lists -- a very helpful for novice arrangers to learn how much plant material to buy and how to prepare it for use.  The 80 arrangements featured are modern and offer ideas on color combinations and containers.  Author Carly Cylinder owns Flour LA, a floral design studio with locations in Los Angeles and New York.
Fresh from the Garden

This book was written for us -- cold climate dwellers who want to grow the healthiest herbs, vegetables and fruits.  Author John Whitman includes a beautiful compendium to aid in your selection.  In the Tomato section, for instance, readers learn when, where and how to plant; how to care for plants including weeding, pruning and feeding; and problems to watch for such as pests, diseases and "marauders."  Nutrition facts are included along with a list of numerous varieties to choose and advice for harvesting, storing and using the crops.
NEWS TO DINE OUT ON:

Did you know that physicists are wiring roses to store electricity? We are not making this up. It's utterly fascinating and will definitely impress your dinner partners. Here's the link: http://www.physicscentral.com/buzz/blog/index.cfm?postid=4623627182429703206
