Happy New Year, KGC!
I hope that you had a wonderful, magical holiday season and that your 2017 is off to a great start. Did you make any New Year's resolutions? I made three: (1) to enter Show of Summer; (2) to enter Show of Summer; and (3) to enter Show of Summer! I decided to keep it simple this year.
Show of Summer registration is open, and the various deadlines are coming up fast. Please check the schedule and mark those relevant to you in your calendar. It would be so sad not to have your entry included!
Floral Designer Annette Von Einem is presenting this year's lecture (Saturday, June 24 at 10 a.m.) and workshop (Saturday, June 24 at 1 p.m.). Both are a
don't miss. Please consider joining the KGC gang at the lecture. Just sign up on
http://www.showofsummer.org, then email me at
mail@macdonald.in and I'll make sure that you receive carpool information.
We have some really great things coming up during this dreary, cold month: the Combined Kenilworth garden clubs meeting on January 23 and "The Horticulture of the Vine" on January 26. Watch your inbox for your Evite.
Please note that the Combined Meeting of the Kenilworth garden clubs is on Monday, January 23, not on January 30, as indicated in our Yearbook. We received the new date after we went to press with the Yearbook. Please watch your inbox for the Evite.
Looking ahead to "Photography Phebruary", there will be a Photography workshop on February 8th, followed by our February 15th program with John Vlahakis at Zia Gallery. It's an evening program, so bring your friends.
Speaking of friends, now is a great time to contact Jeanne Daniel about proposing a candidate for membership. We'd like to get them in asap so that they can participate in the Show of Summer New Members' Challenge. Do make haste and contact Jeanne at
daniel.jeanne777@gmail.com.
Wishing you a happy, healthy and fabulous 2017!

What Exactly Does a Winemaker Do?
What Exactly is Sparkling Wine?
Your questions will be answered at the next Horticulture Workshop, Horticulture of the Vine, Part III: Viniculture and Sparkling Wine--The Human Dimension: The Winemaker & wrap-up.
Just two short years ago, the Horticulture Committee began its three-part horticulture course using fine wine grapes to illustrate and explain horticulture concepts.
We've covered lots of ground in two years, and this year we'll be looking at Viniculture, or what decisions the winemaker makes and how the grapes are processed into wine. We will be tasting sparkling wines this year, studying how the grapes are processed impacts what's in the bottle, and how the differences between the various grape varieties used in sparkling wines like champagne, cava, prosecco and cremant de Loire.
Join us as we virtually tour vineyards and wineries, and sample some fun and interesting sparkling wines. Guests are welcome. Please bring a $10 check payable to KGC or cash to help defray the cost of this Horticulture Workshop.
See you there! A santé!

December Holiday Party
The decorations were beautifully hung, the floral arrangements were artfully placed and Mother Nature lent several inches of snow to put everyone in a festive mood for the annual KGC Holiday Party on December 5. Tina Rice, our hostess with the mostest, welcomed nearly 70 members and spouses to the party. This festive party was a wonderful start to everyone's holiday season!
|
|
|
The hostesses provided a bountiful spread including Barbie Paine's famous "hot rye" appetizers.
|
|
|
|
|
Appetizers included BLT Tomatoes. See below for recipe.
|
|
|
|
|
The dessert buffet was equally bountiful.
|
|
BLT Tomato Appetizer
24-36 Campari tomatoes 1/4 head of Iceberg lettuce 1 lb. bacon, cooked & crumbled 1/2 cup mayonnaise + extra if needed Diced chives for garnish
Cut the tops off of the tomatoes and scoop out the insides, being careful not to cut through the bottom of the tomato. Place cut side down on a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain.
Cook and crumble bacon. Cut Iceberg lettuce into ribbons and then cut into tiny pieces. In a bowl, mix bacon, lettuce and mayonnaise. Fill each tomato with the mixture and top with chives.
Enjoy!

|
Mixed Nut Bars
Combine
1 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
Blend & press into a 9" x 13" pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned and somewhat firm. Cover with 13 oz. mixed nuts. Cut large Brazil nuts into pieces first.
Combine
6 oz. of butterscotch chips
2 Tb. butter
1/2 cup Karo syrup (regular or light)
Melt in a pan and pour over the mixed nuts as evenly as you can. Return to the oven for 10 minutes. Watch carefully -- do not let the edges bubble! Cool and cut into squares.
Enjoy!

Holiday Cheer for JourneyCare
On Dec. 8th, approx 60 different sensational
poesy
arrangements were created for JourneyCare (JC) patients, caretakers and staff on site at JC. Using flowers donated by Mariano's Glenview West store; greens donated by container gardeners Bridgette Schroeder (owner of The Contained Garden), Wendy Fitzpatrick (owner of Just Pots) as well as Nature's Perspective; and repurposed containers collected from rummage sales and various members' cabinets (thanks, Jeanne Daniel!), thirteen KGC Elves took time out from their busy holiday schedules to brave the cold and let their creative juices flow, spreading holiday spirit while listening to carols and sipping on cocoa.

KGC members Joan Senko and Katherine Buehler even helped JC Volunteer Coordinator Debra Mell distribute our creations to patients and staff, noting that "one nurse was literally brought to tears upon receiving one of our bouquets of love." Special thanks go to all who attended this joint Outreach and Floral committee workshop, especially Jeanne Daniel, Joan Dodson and Terri Lorenz, who were instrumental with both setup and cleanup. Look for information in February's newsletter regarding another JC workshop to occur before spring.

Make Something Beautiful -- For You!
Flowers are so ephemeral! On the other hand, earrings, a bracelet, brooch, or headband (tiara?) will last.....and they are so wearable. So why not enter Botanical Arts, Division IV, in this year's Show of Summer? Amy Wickstrom, SOS Botanical Arts Co-Chair was nice enough to send along "Seeds to Beads" to help you get started and assist you in the process. She is also planning a workshop soon. It is copied below and you can also access it via this link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxY3MybfMZoCS1ZiZTRZbEdORk0
If you have questions, please contact Amy at 847.878.0860 or wichstromamy@me.com. She'd love to hear from you and looks forward to your work of wearable art. |
Start Snapping!
GCA member interest in photography has been really exciting and on the rise. In order to showcase the photographic talent in the GCA, the Communications Committee features members' photographs in each issue of the monthly GCA eNews. Photos that are not used in eNews will be archived for future use in other communications - such as the rotating banner on the GCA website.
Each zone is responsible for providing the photos that appear in the GCA eNews for a specific month. The February GCA eNews issue is your month!! Photographs should depict appropriate colorful, seasonal subjects for February preferably from your zone. Any GCA member is eligible to submit photos.
DEADLINE IS January 10, 2017
The Specifics:
We are looking for colorful, seasonal photos to be used in the body of the February eNews. The photo may be in either horizontal or vertical format (a minimum of 200 wide).
What to do:
* Email photo to Helen Glaenzer at hglaenzer@gmail.com
* Put eNews Photo and Zone XI in the subject line.
* Include the member's name, club, and zone in the email, along with the location of the photograph.
* Attach photos as a file in jpeg or tiff format.
Further info:
* Club members may send in several photos of either or both types (landscape or horizontal).
* Please do not send photos with people or pets.
* Pictures that have won a blue ribbon or special award in a GCA photography show are not eligible.
* We will resize the photos after we receive them and it may be necessary to crop the images to fit the intended space in the eNews.
* To be used on the website, the preferred size is 600 x 400 horizontal
* Photos that aren't used will be archived for future issues.
This is a wonderful opportunity and a great season to put your best work out to our viewing audience of 18,000 members! We're looking forward to seeing some sensational images!
