Your KMA: Learning That Works for You

As physicians, we spend our days caring for others. We advocate for our patients, keep up with an ever-changing health care landscape and work to provide the best possible care, often while navigating increasing demands on our time and resources.

That is why I am so thrilled to have helped launch the Your KMA Campaign: a commitment to making sure your professional association is working for you. Your KMA is about listening to what Kentucky physicians need and providing the resources, education, advocacy and support that help you thrive in medicine.

One of the most important ways we can support you is through practical and relevant education. Our Learn With Me series, moderated by KMA Past President Monalisa Tailor, M.D., is designed with that goal in mind: providing timely, physician-focused education that you can take back to your practice and put to work.

Our recent Learn With Me: All Things Billing is a perfect example. I highly recommend taking the time to view this CME offering through KMA’s enduring material page, available here. With the reality of declining reimbursements, we should make sure we receive credit for ALL of the work we do in direct patient care. This webinar provides billing codes and practical guidance that physicians can begin using immediately to get credit for work they are already doing. I was so impressed by the information provided and immediately implemented several of the tips into my own practice.

We all need to get smarter about billing, and this webinar offers useful information for both primary care and specialty physicians. That is what Your KMA should look like: resources that recognize the realities you face every day and give you tools you can use in your practice.

And there is more to come.

Our upcoming Learn With Me: Considerations of Diabetes, featuring Marisa Belcastro, M.D., on Nov. 19 will continue that focus on timely, clinically relevant education. Diabetes remains an important issue for physicians across specialties, and personally for so many of us, and this session will provide another opportunity to learn, earn CME and take practical information back to your patients.

I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities and continue to engage with Your KMA. Whether it is through CME, advocacy, professional development or simply having a stronger voice for physicians in Kentucky, KMA is here to support you.

Your KMA is your association. And we are committed to making sure it delivers value to you.

Put Your Voice to Work: Join KMA Capitol Rounds

Want to make a greater impact on the issues affecting Kentucky physicians and their patients? KMA is excited to introduce “Capitol Rounds,” a new program that gives members the opportunity to put their leadership and advocacy skills into action during the 2027 legislative session.

Capitol Rounds is a continuous opportunity throughout the 30-day legislative session for physicians to spend a few hours in Frankfort meeting directly with their legislators and advocating for issues that matter to Kentucky physicians and their patients.

You choose the date that works for your schedule. Participating physicians are responsible for scheduling their own meetings with legislators, while KMA provides talking points and handouts to help you feel prepared and make the most of your visit.

Capitol Rounds is about moving beyond learning about advocacy and experiencing it firsthand. By participating, physicians can build confidence, develop relationships with legislators and bring the physician perspective directly to the policymakers shaping health care in Kentucky.

Multiple physicians can participate on the same day, making Capitol Rounds an opportunity to connect with colleagues while advocating for the profession and the patients you serve.

Ready to put your voice to work? Visit kyma.org/capitolrounds to select your date and sign up.

Capitol Rounds is a separate advocacy opportunity from KMA’s Physicians’ Day at the Capitol (PDAC), which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17. More information on PDAC, including registration, is forthcoming.

Take Your Leadership to the Next Level: Apply for the

2027 KPLI Class

Are you ready to grow as a physician leader?

Applications are now open for the 2027 Kentucky Physicians Leadership Institute (KPLI), KMA’s award-winning leadership development program designed to help Kentucky physicians strengthen their leadership skills and make a greater impact in their practices, organizations and communities.

KPLI selects up to 15 physicians each year for a year-long leadership development experience. The program returned in 2026 with updated programming focused on the evolving needs of today’s physicians.

As part of Your KMA, KMA is committed to helping physicians grow professionally and develop the skills needed to lead in medicine. KPLI is one of the ways KMA puts that commitment into action.

KPLI: Your Questions Answered

What is KPLI?

The Kentucky Physicians Leadership Institute is KMA’s premier physician leadership development program. Participants take part in a series of learning experiences designed to develop leadership skills and prepare physicians to lead within their practices, health systems, communities and organized medicine.

Who should consider applying?

KPLI is for physicians who are interested in developing their leadership skills and becoming more effective leaders—whether you are already in a formal leadership role or are preparing to take on greater responsibility in the future. The program has attracted physicians from a wide range of specialties, practice settings and geographic areas across Kentucky.

What will I learn?

KPLI addresses a range of leadership skills, including communication, advocacy, governance, emotional intelligence and professional growth. Participants also have opportunities to learn from and connect with experienced leaders.

How much of a commitment is it?

KPLI is a series of learning events over four weekends from May-August. Physicians selected for the class should be prepared to make the time commitment necessary to participate fully and engage with their fellow participants throughout the program. The full schedule for 2027 is available on the application.

When is the application deadline?

Applications for the 2027 KPLI class are due March 14, 2027.

If you have been looking for an opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills, expand your professional network and become more engaged in the future of medicine in Kentucky, KPLI may be the next step for you.

Apply for the 2027 KPLI class and invest in your growth as a physician leader.

Kentucky Measles Outbreak Expands to 157 Cases; Health Alert Issued

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has issued a Health Alert regarding the expanding measles outbreak in Kentucky, with 157 confirmed cases reported across 13 counties, including 9 who have required hospitalization. Of these, 153 cases have occurred since July and are considered part of this active outbreak, including 56 cases associated with an outbreak in Laurel County that started in late August. Nearly all cases have been unvaccinated and are connected to close-knit under-vaccinated communities.

Of particular concern are 6 reported cases in unvaccinated pregnant women. Measles during pregnancy can have negative effects on both the birth parent and baby, with the most common fetal complications of maternal measles being pregnancy loss, premature delivery, and low birth weight. Congenital measles infections have also been reported.
