Summer has drawn to a close and cool temperatures are enveloping the landscape.  Heavier layers are be added in outdoor activity.  Days have grow shorter.  Hot soup is more appealing than a cold sandwich during the restful times of a hike.

Many organizations are seeking individuals to share the Leave No Trace message as a part of their winter programming offerings.  This is a great time to brush up on your presentations and teaching materials.  Do your materials look fresh?  How about your presentation and knowledge?  If not, take the time you need to polish and refine.

Sharing Leave No Trace does not end at the end of summer.  Thank you for seeking educational opportunities throughout the winter and for your continued efforts to share the Leave No Trace message.

Happy Trails!

Teaching Activity - Creative Expression
We have used this activity from Leave No Trace 101 a couple of times with positive results.  Adapt as you need for the group you are working with.

Materials Needed:  Skills & Ethics booklets, candy/prizes, paper and markers

Directions:  Present the seven principles, using LNT educational materials as a guide.  Discuss each principle with the participating audience and ask lots of questions tossing out candy or prizes as positive reinforcement for active participation.

At the end of the presentation, assign a creative writing assignment.  Responses may be in the form of an essay, a letter, a poem - medium of choice.  Drawings are also appropriate.

Questions to be Answered in Assignment:

1.  What are the LNT principles?

2.  What did you learn from this presentation?

3.  How does this relate to your own personal life?

4.  How do you plan to practice LNT next time you are in the outdoors?

Time Needed:

One hour

Tech Tip - Construct Your Own Poop Tube
Have you ever heard of a poop tube? A poop tube is one way to dispose of human waste when you cannot dig a cathole.

Materials Needed:  length of PVC pipe (around 4 inches in diameter), a cap for one end, and a threaded fitting and plug for the other.

How to Construct:  The length of your PVC pipe is contingent on the length of your trip and how much you poop. Six to 10 inches is standard, though 12 to 25 inches is recommended for longer trips. Either secure it to your pack with pack straps, or use duct tape and cord to make a handle and clip it to your pack for easy access.

How to Use:  Ziplock bags are excellent storage options.  Add a tad of kitty litter as a deodorizer in each bag.  Seal bag and dispose in the tube.
