Mole Valley Chamber Events & News
25th September 2020
All change again in terms of government regulation clearly labelled as legally binding. In addition to the 10.00pm curfew for venues with an alcohol licence, there is a need to display the new Track & Trace poster at a very wide range of venues and to get everyone to scan the QR code to book in. Full details are on our website Home Page. Working from home is again being encouraged, and further restrictions have been introduced amid talk that they may increase and last for six months.

Since writing this, the Chancellor has today, Thursday 24, announced a raft of changes to increase or extend support for businesses, including: the Jobs Support Scheme to replace the Furlough Scheme, further grants under the Self Employed Income Support Scheme; extension of the 5% VAT rate on hospitality and leisure; longer term to repay CBIL and Bounce Back loans; extended deadline to apply for those loans and time to pay deferred VAT payments.

Kickstart grants to encourage the employment of 16-24-year olds and Apprenticeships are now available. For more details please click here. The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new 6-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment. Funding will cover for each job placement:100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week; the associated employer National Insurance contributions; and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions. If you wish to take part (and do not require 30 places) please apply via Surrey Chambers to which we are affiliated. Please let the Chamber know if you do apply and with what result so that we have a handle on the response to this locally.

Wednesday 23 September saw Restart Your Business Session 15: ‘Making a Return on Life’, led by Chris Webb of Corfe Wealth Management Ltd, who adopted a far from traditional attitude to a perennially difficult question to answer, and from a very different perspective. He suggested that we start from the question, ‘What Return on Life do I want?’. Where ROL is defined as: ‘How well you are doing in living the life you want; with the money you have’. There were glowing testimonials from two of his clients who attended - he certainly did not put the words in their mouths. Questions followed and covered a wide area. Chris is happy to receive calls and answer questions from anyone who would like to discover more. The video of this will be posted on our YouTube channel. As a result, we are looking to arrange a talk on Equity Release mortgages from our former Chamber Director Lizzi Butcher.

A new collaboration with the Swan Centre means that the regular weekly and Artisan markets in Leatherhead can now expand beyond the space in the High Street which has been limited by the safe distancing requirements. The Artisan Market this Friday will see Bill’s Pots, Hill House Farm, Matties Treats, RoniB’s Kitchen, Short Sweet Bakery, Silent Pool Gin, Simple Silver and The Woodland Trust, and on Saturday, in addition to our trusty regulars, we have a pop-up French market including French Crepes & Galettes, Cheese & Charcuterie, Brittany Onions, Garlic & Honey, Paris Café Music, Vintage French Art Prints, Lavender, Marseille Soap & Giftware and Spanish Clothing & Giftware - so come on down and make the most of both these opportunities! More pitch applications are being received, new traders are signing up and booking further ahead. If you are interested in trying this out to test the market or promote your charity, or simply find a new outlet, the application forms and details can be found here.

Our final event for September, and the last for me as President, will be on 30 September with the topic ‘Time to Reflect and Move Forward’. A brief look at what your Chamber has been doing, and an opportunity to discuss what you would like it to be doing moving forward! This will include 15 minutes or so on a virtual stripped-down AGM including votes on the Board and Accounts. Information has already been circulated to Members by email, and more, including the Reports and Accounts, will go out shortly.

NB We are currently looking for a number of new Directors to join the Chamber Board and to represent businesses and disciplines across the MVDC area. If you would like to find out more about this please call me! We are also still looking for suggestions for further topics, and volunteers or nominations to lead on them! A Member survey will also be sent out shortly to canvas opinion on activity going forward.

Everyone is reminded that some of the many benefits of Chamber Membership include the ability for Members to promote their business events, news, other items of interest, situations vacant and Members Offers & Discounts via the Chamber’s Website and Weekly Update Emails – so Members, please do send details to Melodie Hunt at the Chamber office.

There are some great offers currently on the Members Offers & Discounts page on our website. Surrey Hills Community Radio has an excellent free offer for advertising at the moment, and is open to interviews with our Members too! JP Leadership Coaching is promoting an excellent group coaching programme which offers extraordinary value for a small group as opposed to individual coaching.

Finally, please do promote the benefits of joining the Chamber to your business colleagues and customers. If you have a window which needs one of our posters and a membership sticker do let us know, and we have flyers as well for anyone in a position to deliver some.
Remember this is all about building the strongest possible business community to move forward together as we all come out of the current difficulties and current recession! Our Join Free for Six Months Membership Offer will expire on 30 September! Stay safe and well, shop locally, register for the NHS Covid 19 Track and Trace App and let’s hope for some more good weather!
