Mole Valley Chamber Events & News
24th July 2020
Change remains a constant and, in addition to those changes previously announced for 25 July (sports facilities and venues, such as indoor gyms, fitness and dance studios, indoor swimming pools and indoor water parks), there are more from 1 August. Perhaps the greatest is the ‘pausing’ of the need for those most vulnerable to shield. I don’t think this will mean that the extremely vulnerable will leave their homes in droves to sample the delights forbidden to them for so long! There is a natural reluctance to potentially undermine the safety they have ‘enjoyed’ for the last four months, and many will be consulting their GPs or hospital consultants for reassurance or otherwise. Employers will have more discretion to bring back working in the workplace in consultation with their employees and following the Covid-19 Secure guidelines. Live indoor performances can now take place. There will be pilots for larger commercial events, and it will be possible to bowl indoors and enjoy a wedding reception for up to 30 people.

From today everyone should wear face coverings in shops and confined spaces as well as on public transport.

Encouraging people to visit all of these businesses is not quite so easy, so t o help stimulate business the government announced a reduction in VAT rates for hospitality businesses, and also announced the Eat Out To help Out Campaign . Cafes, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants who register for this can offer a discount of 50% up to £10 per head against the cost of food and non-alcoholic drinks on Monday to Wednesdays between 3 and 31 August . The venue then claims the difference from the Government. A number of Chamber Members are already advertising that they are offering this discount.

Here is a link to the MVDC website where they have listed everything you could want or need for restarting, in one place. The different headings lead to the relevant sections of the advice contained on the website. This link is also on the home page of our website. For those looking for signage, screens, etc., Chamber Member Kall Kwik Leatherhead has developed a wide range in a number of colourways. Our videos of the Risk Assessment and Working Safely During Covid-19 and HR Considerations session featured in previous newsletters are still available on our YouTube channel and continue to be added to weekly.

If you missed the webinars referred to last week you can access a recording from MVDC. As before, The Retail Group is also offering the opportunity to have a friendly, informal chat with one of their experts on a one to one, first come first served basis. To sign up for these, or if you have any queries, please send an email to MVDC.

On Wednesday 22 July, Tony Fleming from Pathfinder Project Management , our new Member Francine Gallo, from The Outsourced PA , and myself from SatNav4Business gave brief presentations on Planning (me) Implementing (Tony) and Outsourcing (Francine). The video will be posted to our YouTube channel. My spoof Planning Your Summer Holidays guide is available , and my Members’ offer will appear shortly on our website .

Our next Virtual Coffee event is on Wednesday 29 July - Restart Your Business Session 9: P is for Pricing , led by Mark Peacock from The Pricing Coach . More details will be found shortly on our website, but at a time when every business will be looking at how it operates and its pricing , Mark’s way makes a whole heap of sense!

Wednesday 5 August sees another Virtual Coffee event - Restart Your Business Session 10: Starting with Video , led by Richard Horne of Here We Go Films . Again, more details will shortly be found on our website, but suffice it to say that Google loves video, and this can help your rise up the organic listings!

On 5 August we also have our The Not a Pub Quiz , with questions set by Jackie Adams from Jackie Adams Consulting , who won last month’s Quiz. The aficionados amongst you will recognise that this should have been Bob Knight’s month, but they have swapped!

On Wednesday 19 August we have our next monthly Virtual Breakfast - Expanding Your Network and a Special Opportunity for our Newest Members . July’s breakfast was so successful - with some 40 Members and guests registered, and 14 new Members using the 2/3-minute slots to introduce themselves and their businesses - that we are repeating the same format for the August event. New Members are reminded to book both the event and also their 2-3-minute slot with Kerry-Anne Kitson . After the introductions, there will be a chance to ask any questions, followed by the regular one-minute speed round of all other Members.

NB: We are still looking for suggestions for further topics, and volunteers or nominations to lead on them!

A reminder from MVDC that every business open should have carried out a Risk Assessment and completed and be displaying the blue Staying Covid-19 Secure in 2020 notice prominently on a door or window. Please be careful with putting out A-boards!

Remember that one of the challenges for all businesses as they reopen is to get the message out that they have done so and to reassure customers that they are safe to use and operating in accordance with Government guidelines! How are you getting this message out there? If by using social media, then as a Chamber we will support you in terms of liking, sharing, commenting or retweeting as appropriate - and please do the same for other local business and the Chamber posts!

Be sure to look at the Members Offers & Discounts page on our website. Surrey Hills Community Radio has an excellent offer for advertising at the moment, and is open to interviews with fellow Members too! If you have an offer out there or wish to promote something special, please do send details to Kerry-Anne . We are also now publicising job opportunities for Chamber Members, so please let us have any sits vacant too!

Finally, please do promote the benefits of joining the Chamber to your business colleagues and customers. If you have a window which needs one of our posters and a Membership sticker do let us know, and we have flyers as well for anyone in a position to deliver some.
Remember, this is all about building the strongest possible business community to move forward together as we all come out of the current difficulties and likely recession.

Stay safe and well, shop locally, and let’s hope for some more good weather!
