Why Authentic Connection is the Key to Acquiring the Right Donors

If there is one challenge nonprofits are grappling with the most, it’s that fewer and fewer donors are giving. Per the most recent Fundraising Effectiveness Project data, the donor base decreased by 3.6% in 2025 — marking the fifth consecutive year donor numbers dropped.


Other industry data reveals related donor acquisition and retention trends. According to the latest data from Virtuous, three in every four first-time donors are not giving again.


“Obviously, that’s really concerning and then puts a lot of pressure on not only donor acquisition — but also what types of donors are we acquiring, and then how do we retain them?” Sarah Krasin, managing partner at CCS Fundraising, said.


This question is key — particularly because acquisition is more costly than retention, and because donors who make a second gift have a higher donor lifetime value (LTV).


Finding High-Quality Donors

When it comes to acquiring high-quality donors, making sure prospects are aligned with your organization’s mission is paramount. To get the best return on your efforts, Tal Alter, managing director at Orr Group, recommended nonprofits do the alignment work upfront.


“By looking first at interest and then second at capability, you’re able to put a nonprofit partner in a position to initiate and qualify a prospect and then build an authentic relationship with them,” Alter said.

Gina Vaughn, vice president of client service at the Gail Perry Group, emphasized that affinity is a big piece of the puzzle, especially when considering major donor prospects.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kentucky Nonprofit Network (KNN) announced the formation of the Northern Kentucky Nonprofit Coalition (NKNC) at a launch event hosted by sponsor Dean Dorton. This new regional alliance of KNN members aims to build a stronger, more unified nonprofit sector voice among organizations serving Northern Kentucky. NKNC joins existing coalitions in Lexington, Louisville, and Southeastern Kentucky—a step toward KNN's goal of creating a strong statewide network of nonprofit leaders advocating locally for the work of the nonprofit community.


In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Hamilton County 513Relief Bus, in partnership with Council on Aging, will host a Healthy Aging Summit, Wednesday, May 27, 10:00am-2:00pm, at The Word Family Life Event and Community Center. The event will also mark the official launch of the Hamilton County Senior Utility Assistance Program, providing the first opportunity for eligible residents to apply for Duke Energy utility bill assistance. 


Multiple agencies will be hosting the Smart Savings Utilities Resource Fair, May 19, 9:00am-noon, to help people with their utility bills. Learn how to keep your bills down, get help with payments and find out about resources. The event takes place at the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency, 1740 Langdon Farm Rd.


The Victorian at Riverside, an assisted-living facility for older adults in Covington, is grateful to the Maxwell C. Weaver Foundation for a $5,000 grant to provide meals for the residents.


Samaritan Car Care Clinic celebrates recent grants from the Charles H. Dater Foundation; the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trust, Fifth Third Bank, N.A., Trustee; and the Millstone Fund. These grants support the Clinic's efforts to address transportation barriers for low-income families, as well as support co-op positions for Gateway Community and Technical College auto technology students. With this and other community support, the Samaritan Car Care Clinic is able to offer a hand up to families so they can literally stay on the road to self-sufficiency.


Neighborhood Allies is grateful for recent grants from the Edelweiss Foundation, Guardian Savings Bank, Union Savings Bank, and the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trust, Fifth Third Bank, N.A., Trustee. These grants will be used to provide various forms of direct assistance for Resource Navigation Program participants.

LifeSciKY, Kentucky's nonprofit lab incubator, has welcomed Tyler Egloff as its newest Innovation Fellow. This role offers undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience in the life sciences industry, allowing them to work on impactful projects alongside industry leaders, gaining real-world insights and building industry connections.



FUNDING AND RESOURCE OPPORTUNITIES

ArtsWave and MeetNKY have opened applications for the 2026 Northern Kentucky Creative Placemaking Grant, a program supporting arts and cultural heritage projects that activate public spaces, strengthen neighborhoods and contribute to Northern Kentucky’s cultural identity and visitor appeal. The competitive grant program provides up to $10,000 per project, or up to 50% of total project expenses, to nonprofit organizations proposing arts-driven initiatives that contribute to community development across Northern Kentucky. OneSource Center created the Emerging Leader Award to recognize talented nonprofit professionals who demonstrate exceptional promise and a commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector. The Award provides a full scholarship for the selected honoree to participate in the EXCEL Executive Leadership Program, including one year of executive coaching. A Spring 2026 class at NKU will look at occupational therapy intervention and program planning for group and activity development. We are looking for community partners to help us teach our students.
