Diversifying Nonprofit Revenue Beyond Federal Grants

A few years ago, we at the National Environmental Health Association found ourselves in what most nonprofits would call a dream scenario. We had just been awarded two of the largest federal grants in environmental health. These grants accelerated our work toward our mission to build, sustain, and empower an effective environmental health workforce. This was not incremental funding. It was transformational funding - the kind that unlocks an organization.


Overnight, the question changed from “Can we afford to do this?” to “What else could we do?” We moved quickly to expand programs, grow teams, piloted new ideas, and reach the environmental health workforce in ways we had never imagined. We felt unstoppable.


But in 2023, federal funding conversations shifted. The tone changed. The certainty we had been operating under started to erode, and we were forced to confront something we hadn’t fully acknowledged. We weren’t just supported by federal funding. We had become dependent on it. And the people we had always called “constituents” — we needed to start thinking of them as “customers.”


In a room full of passionate advocates, technical experts, and people deeply committed to our mission, we asked a question we could barely stomach: What happens if this goes away — not hypothetically, but operationally, in our current structure, with our current budgets?

YWCA Greater Cincinnati has named Carolyn Hefner as Chief Development Officer.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Hamilton has been selected to receive a $700,000 Welcome Home Ohio grant for the rehabilitation or construction of seven homes in Fairfield Township and the City of Hamilton.

Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is deeply grateful to The Wohlgemuth Herschede Foundation for a $10,000 grant to provide vision rehabilitation equipment for people who are blind or visually impaired with financial need.


Cutting Edge Flooring & Tile is inviting the community to a special dog adoption and donation event, “Partying with Animal Friends,” Friday, July 11, 9:00am - 12:00pm, 7708 Service Center Drive, West Chester, OH. 45069. The event, held in partnership with Animal Friends Humane Society of Butler County, will give local families the opportunity to meet adoptable dogs, support shelter animals in need, and enjoy a fun morning filled with activities for both people and pets.


LaRosa's is partnering with Hoxworth Blood Center to host a series of mobile blood drives throughout July and August at its pizzerias in Greater Cincinnati, to help save lives locally.  Hoxworth is experiencing an extremely low inventory of O Negative and O Positive blood supply due to high hospital usage locally. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center would like to thank the John A. Schroth Family Charitable Trust for their generous gift of $25,000 towards our arts and cultural programming, helping us expand access to arts and culture in Greater Cincinnati.



LEAD Training has received $ 250,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Department of Development and the Governor's Office of Workforce Transformation's Industry Sector Partnership Grant Program (ISP) to expand its successful Medical Pathways Partnership with 23 high schools in 4 Ohio counties.  LEAD is one of only fifteen Ohio organizations to receive ISP funding.  LEAD has also been awarded $50,000 from PNC Charitable Trust for service expansion of its successful High School Workforce Initiative.
