Top Fundraisers Don’t Do More - They Do Less on Purpose

In most fundraising shops, the calendar is packed — but the results don’t always match the activity. Reports get written. Events get planned. Meetings fill the day. But it’s harder to say what actually moved a donor.


That disconnect — between visible effort and real impact — was at the center of the session, “How Top Fundraisers Work Differently (And How You Can Too),” at AFP ICON 2026 with Alice Ferris, ACFRE, CFRE, partner at GoalBusters Consulting and Chad Barger, ACFRE, CFRE, owner and chief strategist at Productive Fundraising. Top fundraisers, they argued, don’t win by doing more. They win by protecting their capacity, eliminating low-value work, and building systems they can sustain.


“In fundraising, we do a lot of stuff,” Barger said. “We’re not really sure if it’s the right stuff.”

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Summerfair Cincinnati returns May 29–31 at Coney Island, featuring more than 300 juried artists from across the country. The long-running event combines visual art, live performances, and food, drawing more than 20,000 attendees each year. The festival also supports the regional arts community through scholarships, awards, and funding for local organizations.


Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is deeply grateful to American Council of the Blind of Ohio, Greater Cincinnati Chapter for a $2000 grant to provide adaptive equipment.


The World Affairs Council-Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky will be hosting the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) Council Leadership Meeting from June 8th-10th. The opening reception will be at TQL Stadium with Jeff Berding, Co-CEO of FC Cincinnati, June 8, 5:30pm-7:00pm. Find more information here.


Banklick Watershed Council is proud to announce over $408,000 in awards to restore and protect waterways in Northern Kentucky. This includes a $250,000 grant from the Kentucky Division of Water via the Clean Water Act §319 program, along with $158,000 in matching funds from the Kentucky GRANT program. These resources will enable the Council to update its watershed plan, create public greenspaces, and improve habitats to restore the health and vitality of this community waterway. 


The Art Academy of Cincinnati Alumni Association will present its highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, to Mary Ellen Goeke during the Academy’s Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 16 at Memorial Hall.


Santa Maria Community Services is thrilled to announce the public phase of its One Building, Thriving Families capital campaign. This initiative marks a pivotal chapter in Santa Maria's long-standing mission to be a catalyst and advocate for Greater Price Hill families as they work toward their educational, financial, and health goals.


The bi3 Fund announced a nearly $7 million investment to support youth mental health and wellbeing across Greater Cincinnati. Youth led the funding decisions for $5.3 million to four organizations to create safe community spaces, while bi3 is investing an additional $1.5 million in Hopeful Empowered Youth (HEY!) to advance its regional strategy.


Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) announces a new partnership with Hamilton County Juvenile Court providing access to meaningful, creative opportunities for court-involved youth. This collaboration will debut with a multi-media exhibit showcasing the voices of young people currently housed at the Court's Youth Detention Center. “Voices Unheard: Art, Identity, and Experience,” opens May 11, continuing through May 31. Each piece, created with support from the music, English, art, and science teachers inside the Youth Center's Cincinnati Public School, reflects personal stories of identity, resilience, rehabilitation, and growth shaped by lived experiences. 


The Victorian at Riverside, an assisted-living facility for older adults in Covington, is grateful to the Edelweiss Foundation for a $25,000 grant to provide meals for the residents.


The Boone County Public Library Foundation was recently awarded a $25,000 grant in support of the project Rejuvenate, Grow, Charge: Powered by the Community. This project was financially assisted by H.G., H.F. & Louise Tuechter Dornette Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, N.A., Trustee. This project will transform more than 30 acres at the Library’s Hebron Branch into an interactive and inclusive environment designed to promote environmental literacy, physical and mental wellness with walking trails and community gardens, as well as access to clean energy.


Fisher-Nightingale Houses, Inc. (FNHI)'s, "Compassionate Care Heals 2026" gala was held on April 25. This is the annual major fundraiser for FNHI, whose mission is to support the three Greater-Dayton Area Fisher Houses, which are compassionate care facilities for military men and women during times of medical need. Highlights of the evening included remarks from Colonel Dustin Richards, Commander of the 88th Air Base Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the presentation of a $50,000 check from the leadership of New Season Ministry Church.


Know Your Rights in Housing, May 30, 1:00pm-4:00pm, Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church. Learn how to identify housing discrimination, understand your protections under fair housing laws, and get connected to local resources designed to support renters.We’ll also cover housing vouchers, the differences between public, project-based, and private housing, eviction information, and helpful CMHA resources and programs. Leave feeling more informed, confident, and prepared.


Kentuckians came together to support nonprofits across the Commonwealth during the 14th annual Kentucky Gives Day, raising $853,218 for a record 303 participating organizations through the statewide 24-hour giving event.


For many first-generation and non-traditional students, the path to a post-high school degree or certification isn’t blocked by a lack of talent or ambition, but by the “hidden” costs of life. The Chatfield Edge announced another step forward in clearing that path, receiving a $15,000 grant from The Duke Energy Foundation.

FUNDING AND RESOURCE OPPORTUNITIES

ArtsWave and MeetNKY have opened applications for the 2026 Northern Kentucky Creative Placemaking Grant, a program supporting arts and cultural heritage projects that activate public spaces, strengthen neighborhoods and contribute to Northern Kentucky’s cultural identity and visitor appeal. The competitive grant program provides up to $10,000 per project, or up to 50% of total project expenses, to nonprofit organizations proposing arts-driven initiatives that contribute to community development across Northern Kentucky. Funded projects will take place between June 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027. Find full grant guidelines and apply here.


OneSource Center created the Emerging Leader Award to recognize talented nonprofit professionals who demonstrate exceptional promise and a commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector. The Award provides a full scholarship for the selected honoree to participate in the EXCEL Executive Leadership Program, including one year of executive coaching.
