Hello everyone!

We miss seeing you in person SO MUCH!! But as we continue to navigate the world of social distancing and virtual programming, check out our latest update for current and upcoming virtual program offerings with your TR Team! We are relying heavily on our social media outlets (links below) and zoom programs to stay connected. It's time to get creative!

We welcome your new ideas, ways to make Therapeutic Recreation here in Chattanooga better, and any overall feedback. Keep in mind, plans may change or get moved around and new programs will continue to be added, so please review each newsletter to find potential changes!

OUR MISSION: The Therapeutic Recreation Division of the Chattanooga Youth and Family Development Department seeks to provide leisure and recreation opportunities for citizens of all abilities. We serve both youth and adults with physical, cognitive, and/or emotional disabilities. Through our programs, education and advocacy, individuals can build confidence, improve physical and cognitive abilities, expand support and social networks; and enhance overall quality of life.

Ditch the social media post for the literal post!
WHAT: This is a pen pal style program with an artistic twist where participants are matched with an Art Pal peer to correspond via snail mail and share artsy creations! This is a great opportunity to build friendships through art and stay connected. Access to various art ideas and resources will be provided. All artistic ability welcomed!

Super Hoops Zoomskillz NEW!
WHAT: Join Coach Jacob and the team for six weeks of Virtual Super Hoops basketball skills practice via Zoom! This will include dribbling drills, group exercise, team building activities, and sharpening our overall game! Individual basketballs will be provided for pick up. Space is limited!
WHO: Individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, ages 13+
WHEN: Monday evenings, two sessions -- 
5-5:45pm - (beginner/intermediate) and 6-6:45pm (advanced)
DATES: 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26
WHERE: Zoom. The link will be emailed out to those who sign up. See below for tech support. The ideal space would be outside on a flat surface where you still have access to the internet via a phone, tablet, laptop (sidewalk, porch, garage, etc.). Of course this can be done inside as well. You do not need to have access to a basketball goal.   
COST: Free and includes a Free basketball (pick-up dates TBA)

Chill & Chatter NEW!
Chillin' Like Villains - With Another Twist
WHAT: Monthly zoom meetings for a super casual reunion of Chillin' friends! No theme or pressure to perform in any way - just a relaxed opportunity to 'hang out' and catch up with one another online in lieu of meeting in person. TR staff will also be present during these meetings to help direct conversation as needed.

DATE: First session 9/29 -- Once/month, additional dates to come.
TIME: 5:30-6pm EDT
WHO: Chillin' Like Villains is a young adult social group for individuals ages 16 and older who have various disabilities.

Boo in the Zoo Dreamnight
Save the date for October 14th!

WHAT: Dreamnight is a free, open house event for individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or special needs and their families or caretakers. Dreamnight offers a VIP Zoo visit that acknowledges and accommodates the unique circumstances that may limit relaxing outings for these families during normal operating hours. This event will be operating in accordance with CDC recommended guidelines.
WHO: Individuals of all ages with special needs and/or terminal illnesses and their families or caretakers.
WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 14th

WHERE: The Chattanooga Zoo in Warner Park

Adaptive Mt. Biking Clinic NEW!
Chattanooga, TN - Oct. 31st
WHAT: An intro to Adaptive Mt. Biking Clinic hosted by Catalyst Sports and in partnership with Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center. Are you ready to get off the road and into nature? Come ride with us, where trained experts will fit a bike to your needs and give you access to the exciting world of mountain biking! Reserve a time slot (1.5 hours) and come ride on the trails. Pre-Registration required. Spaces are limited to respect COVID guidelines so please only register for one time slot. VOLUNTEERS: please register for any time slots you are available. Previous mountain bike experience required. Volunteer training will be Friday, October 30th from 6-8pm.

Special Olympics
Join us in our Special Olympics Fit 5 Challenge! 'Achieve fitness and your personal best with physical activity, nutrition, and hydration.' Stay united in athleticism with other Special Olympics athletes. The program will include zoom check-ins of our progress, shared resources, photos, shouts outs, friendship, and a whole lot of fun! Resources and instructions will be sent out to those who register by contacting Michelle through email or phone (see below). Missed signing up? No worries, registration is ongoing!

Virtual Hiking Club
Tuesdays at 3pm, ongoing!!
Join us as we virtually explore the world!! Through videos, interactive websites, special guests and fun facts in our meetings, there are no limits to where we can go - together! We travel between National Parks of the US and areas of interest in other countries to places such as Machu Picchu, The Grand Canyon, Iceland, Arches National Park, K2, and more! Explore on your own with video tours we send out and join us on Zoom to discuss the tours every Tuesday at 3pm! We occasionally have special guests from across the globe attend to give us the inside scoop! These hikes are accessible to all! Unsure what to do or how this works? TR Challenge
Wednesdays ongoing!! There are 20 challenges already posted! Check them out for fun activities to do on your own at home!
Think Minute-to-Win-It style games with a creative recreational twist and you've got a pretty good idea of what this is all about. We'll be coming at you once a week through Facebook with a new recreational challenge. From shooting hoops with ping pong balls into laundry baskets, to the furthest flying paper airplane contests, tune in to our Facebook page and YouTube station for the weekly challenge. (Links below). We'll give full and specific instructions in our video posts. Scheduled to begin next Wednesday, March 26th. You may be asking, 'How do I get involved??' Simply follow our Facebook page, (link below), allow notifications from us, and stay tuned for each challenge! No Registration Required! It's easy to participate - below each TR Challenge post, post your own comment, video or picture of yourself completing the challenge and your "score"

Chillin' Like Villians - with a twist
WHAT: Biweekly themed Zoom meetings for a reunion of Chillin' friends! This is a fun virtual social opportunity in lieu of meeting in person.

DATE: Thursdays, biweekly. The next meeting is 9/24/20
TIME: 12pm EDT (Noon) (45-60 minutes long)

Zoomacise With Coach Jacob!
Now on Fridays at 11:30am!
WHAT: You've heard of exercise... well, during our continued social distancing, join our legendary Coach Jacob for Zoomacise! This is weekly guided work outs done virtually through Zoom! Each session will last up to 45 minutes and is highly interactive. All you need to bring with you to the meeting is two cans of soup or two small weights, a chair if you want to sit down, and water to drink! Great program for our Special Olympics Fit 5 crew!

How Do I Connect on Zoom??

If you are not familiar with Zoom, please click on the zoom support link for comprehensive information on how to connect with any device. Please check it out for more in depth and device-specific instruction.


Before joining a Zoom meeting on a computer or mobile device, you will need to download the Zoom app. This can be done from the Zoom Download Center. Otherwise, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click a join link. You can also join a test meeting to familiarize yourself with Zoom.

*You will not need a meeting ID to join, just your name.

Ali Update
After over two years of hard work and devotion to Chattanooga Therapeutic Recreation Services, TR Program Support Staff member Ali Hansford has moved on to grad school with the University of Texas, pursuing her Masters in Occupational Therapy! Will will miss you, Ali, but we know you are destined for great things! Your smile, drive, and care have left a lasting impact on our community here in Chattanooga. This doesn't have be goodbye... just see you later! Thank you for being such a valuable member of our TR team over the years. We wish you all the best in this next big adventure!!
