150th Kentucky Derby
As the oldest continuously held sporting event in American history, the Kentucky Derby has no shortage of long-standing records, interesting tidbits and fun traditions. Let’s take a look at some ahead of this weekend’s “Run for the Roses.”

  • Nineteen past winners have had names beginning with the letter "S," including Secretariat.

  • The title of youngest jockey to win the esteemed race is shared by Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton and James "Soup" Perkins—both were just 15 come Derby day in 1892 and 1895, respectively. Bill Shoemaker continues to hold the title as the oldest winner; he was 54 when he took home the 1986 title.

  • Mike Smith has ridden the most Kentucky Derby horses (27) in history, beating out Bill Shoemaker's record of 26 in 2021.

  • The Derby is also referred to as 'The Run for the Roses' because the winner is awarded a blanket sewn with over 400 roses post-race. This blanket weighs about 40 lbs.

  • Three fillies (female horses) have won the Derby: Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980), and Winning Colors (1988).

  • All thoroughbred race horses have the same birthday—January 1. No matter what day a horse was born on during the year, race horse age is marked from New Year's Day in order to make it easier to keep track of bloodlines.

  • Secretariat remains the fastest horse in Kentucky Derby history. His 1973 record time of 1:59.40 has never been broken. The slowest winning time, on the other hand, is credited to the 1891 winner, Kingman, who took 2:52.25 to complete the 1.5 miles.

  • Starting posts #5 and #10 have proved to be the luckiest—riders assigned to those posts have won more times than any of the other starting lanes.

  • No horses with names beginning with Q, X, or Y have ever won the Derby.

  • For the 150th anniversary of the race, the purse for the Derby was raised to $5 million (up from $3 million in 2023) with the winner taking home $3.1 million, $1 million for the runner up, $500,000 for third place, $250,000 for fourth place, and $150,000 for fifth.
