BUILDING OUR WAY TO
A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY
HASTINGS-PRINCE EDWARD
Thinking About Community and Being Dementia Friendly

We are thinking ahead to a time when we can all enjoy our community spaces together again. The Alzheimer Society, along with our many community supporters are also thinking about how community spaces can be more inviting, inclusive and dementia friendly.

With our Dementia Friendly Communities initiative, the goal is to foster communities that:
• understand dementia
• support persons with dementia to feel included and independent.

Over the past year we have surveyed persons living with dementia and care partners who are connected to Alzheimer Society support groups and activities.

We asked the question: Where do you go in the community, on a weekly or monthly basis?

And the answer? We heard about the many outings that persons living with dementia and care partners do together including:
  • trips to stores of different types (such as grocery, pharmacy, hardware)
  • outings to community spaces such as shopping malls, parks, public events
  • recreation and leisure activities such as concerts, theatre, and movies
  • social groups and service clubs such as Kiwanis
  • support groups and social activities offered through the Alzheimer Society
  • fitness and recreation
  • going to church
  • & more!

Of services and establishments visited frequently,
  • Two thirds of respondents mentioned grocery stores
  • Almost half of respondents mentioned restaurants and one third mentioned banks
  • One quarter mentioned pharmacies.

Hearing from individuals and families connected to the Alzheimer Society helps to strengthen our Dementia Friendly Communities program. A key strategy is offering training and education to community organizations, businesses and services and equipping staff and volunteers serving the public with the knowledge and skills they need to provide service to people with dementia in the most appropriate ways. This is a powerful first step in helping persons with dementia and care partners feel valued and welcomed in the communities where they live.

Thank you to our office and admin volunteers who continue to work on data input entry for our dementia friendly communities program!

ASHPE is grateful for funding provide by the Ontario Trillium Foundation in support of the Dementia Friendly Communities program.
Let's talk about Dementia Awareness Training for your organization, service or business. We are now offering this training online!
What do participants gain from the training?
  • Increased understanding and awareness of dementia
  • Strategies for how businesses and services can better meet the needs of individuals with memory loss
  • Increased skills and confidence among staff when interacting with those who have dementia
Hi I'm Amelia!
I am a Fund Development Coordinator for ASHPE! I help coordinate the Societies fundraising activities, campaigns and assist with communications and marketing. I truly love connecting with our donors, supporters, families and community.

I was born and raised in Quinte and love this area. I am proud to be part of an organization where all funds raised stay local and have such a direct impact on the lives of families and individuals right here at home.

When I am not busy putting the ‘fun’ in fundraising, I love spending time with my fiancé Kyle and my family. Kyle and I love getting outside and hitting the road – whether for a camping trip or just for the afternoon. Cooking is something we also really enjoy, and I always love finding a new recipe for us to share.

3 things about me:
 - The Office is my absolute favourite tv show
 - I love succulents, air plants and cacti
 - I make the best chocolate chip cookies ( and you can too )

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies
Check out this recipe – they really are the BEST!

People who exercise regularly are less likely to develop heart disease, stroke and diabetes, which are all associated with an increased risk of dementia.

Physical activity also pumps blood to the brain, which nourishes the cells with nutrients and oxygen, and may even encourage new cells. As well, regular exercise helps to reduce stress and improve your mood.
Thank you to a local caregiver who shared these amazing resources!
1) Upper Body Workout Seated
2) Leg Workout
3) Full Low Impact Workout for Seniors
4) Morning Wellness Meditation for Gratitude
BOOK SALES
OVER 23 YEARS OF FUNDRAISING!
Our book sales raise over $12,000 annually!

PLEASE NOTE:
OUR JUNE 2020 BOOK SALE HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Be sure to follow us on Facebook for more information.
BOOK DONATIONS
The volunteers at the Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward have been running used book sales in Belleville since 1989. The community has learned that the Society is the place to go when weeding out bookshelves at home. Every single day, we receive donations of books - sometimes just a couple of softcovers, other times four or five boxes! Volunteers come in on a regular basis to sort through the donations, sorting them into fiction/non-fiction, softcover/hardcover and finding some gems for themselves along the way.

If you wish to donate your used books, please note that in order to keep our staff, volunteers and clients safe, we are not taking any book donations at this time. Please leave any book donations aside for us, as we will need lots of books once we can safely accept donations again.

Please contact Hannah Foxall, Fund Development Coordinator at 613-962-0892 or [email protected] to discuss your possible donation.  We appreciate you thinking of us!

"Boost your brain by choosing healthy foods. Healthy food choices not only improve your general health, they are also beneficial to brain health. The Alzheimer Society of Canada recognizes the significant investment of time and effort caregivers offer to those with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. At some stages, meal preparation can also offer an opportunity for activities and routines for people with dementia." - The Alzheimer Society of Canada
