Dear Friends:
At the meetings of 15th August and 5th September 2023, we checked-in with each other at the beginning of the meetings as a touch point about how each of us is doing.
Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston shared her Moderator’s report. In addition, the financial reports were presented and discussed. The August reports reflected the July Dashboard (see the financial snapshot and other financial information at the links here). In August, the Governing Board elected new executive officers:
- Rev. Alberto Nájera was elected to the position of Vice Chair for a one-year term.
- Chad Hobbs was elected to the position of Treasurer for a one-year term.
- James Chavis was elected to the position of Clerk for a one-year term.
- Rev. Marie Alford-Harkey will continue as Vice Treasurer for another year.
With deepest gratitude for their commitment to serve, the Governing Board issued the following motion of thanks and appreciation: Motion of thanks to Mark Godette for serving as the Governing Board Clerk for the prior year.
Dates were set for Dreaming MCC's Future sessions. In order to involve as many as possible, sessions were offered on multiple days and times friendly to our global audience.
The Finance Committee recommended to the Governing Board a plan to increase the interest on the operating reserve by holding it in an interest bearing savings account.
One of MCC's 5 strategic aims is Leadership - Robust recruiting, training and mentoring plans to raise up a new generation of leaders. We want to ensure that we are investing in leadership development of MCC’ers around the world.
The Lilly Endowment has awarded MCC a $US500,000 sustainability matching grant over five years to develop the Thriving in Ministry Program. MCC is responsible for raising the matching $500,000 over 5 years, through fundraising and "in kind" expenditures such as direct staff time working on Thriving in Ministry. A stipulation of the grant is that it is used to fund US based programs. The Governors discussed and passed a motion to create a Global Leadership Fund with a target of $200,000 to invest in leadership development around the world.
The Governors had an in-depth discussion of the Commission on Pathways of Healing and Reconciliation’s recommendations and will continue to review progress and receive key updates.
As the world continues to deal with uncertainty and unrest, we seek to find peace and unity. We offer the following quote from Desmond Tutu: "If we could but recognize our common humanity, that we do belong together, that our destinies are bound up in one another's, that we can be free only together, that we can be human only together, then a glorious world would come into being where all of us lived harmoniously together as members of one family, the human family."
