Wildfire Preparedness and Insurance: Navigating and Mitigating Risks, the Legal Backdrop, Challenges and Possible Ways Forward
The devastating Los Angeles fires have created a new urgency on how to prepare our homes and communities to reduce the risk from a wildfire.
UCLA Anderson School of Management estimates total property and capital losses could range between $76 billion and $131 billion. This does not include other economic losses, such as long term healthcare costs. Video evidence from those fires brings home the danger of burning embers and the fuel loads that surround many of our homes.
At the same time accelerating insurance premium rate hikes and cancellations of homeowner’s insurance policies for those living in and near high fire risk areas have raised alarms and motivated ESP and MCL CAWG to organize this discussion, with the following speakers:
* Mark Brown, Executive Officer of the Marin Wildfire Protection Agency, will talk about the primary risks to our homes, how we and fire professionals can assess that risk at the parcel and community level, and mitigation efforts that we need to undertake.
Mark believes that by guiding and measuring MWPA mitigation efforts through science and data at a new level, they are helping to create a sustainable insurance environment. Mark will answer questions about impending new legal requirements relating to Zero to Five feet.
* Adam Cole, attorney and former General Counsel of the California Department of Insurance, will speak about the current legal backdrop in California related to homeowner’s insurance.
-- What is the current availability and pricing of insurance in the face of wildfires?
-- What is the “Sustainable Insurance Strategy” and how does it seek to improve insurance availability and affordability?
-- Are insurers doing enough to acknowledge mitigation?
-- Can they be forced to do more?
