December 2024 is Osteopathic Medicine Month in Michigan!
The MOA is thrilled to share that December is officially Osteopathic Medicine Month in Michigan! Thank you to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for recognizing "the many exceptional individuals within the osteopathic profession, including medical students, residents, physicians, and researchers, who are working to increase the health and well-being of Michiganders across our state.”
The proclamation spotlights that "Michigan holds the distinction of having one of the strongest presences of osteopathic medicine in the country, with 8,900 osteopathic physicians in the state."
Just as we have since 1898, the MOA and our members will continue to advance the science and art of osteopathic medicine, education and research in Michigan, this month and every month

As another year comes to an end, we're reflecting on the amazing work that osteopathic doctors do for their patients and communities every day. Wishing all of you a holiday season filled with health, happiness and love!
Save the Date for Our 2025 Spring Conference
|
We look forward to seeing you at our annual Spring Conference, which will be held May 15-18 at the Somerset Inn in Troy, Mich.
Among the organizations joining us at the Spring Conference will be the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, which shared the below article about chronic kidney disease for this month's edition of the Pulse.
Empowering Healthcare Providers: Tackling Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Awareness and Early Detection
Healthcare providers hold a pivotal role in identifying and addressing chronic kidney disease (CKD) risks among their patients. 1 in 3, or 33%, of adults in the United States are at risk for kidney disease, and most don’t know. This risk is even more prevalent among certain demographic groups, including Hispanic, Black, American Indian, and Middle Eastern North African individuals.
CKD often progresses silently. It is often asymptomatic in its early stages, resulting in many patients are unaware they have the disease until it has progressed. Furthermore, several health conditions significantly heighten the risk, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and a family history of kidney disease.
In partnership with the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, we are urging healthcare providers to prioritize CKD testing and engage in open dialogues with their patients. Testing and effective patient-provider communication is equally crucial. Beyond conveying diagnostic results, discussions should delve into risk factors, lifestyle modifications, and shared decision-making processes. Empowering patients with knowledge and involving them in their care journey are essential steps toward mitigating CKD's impact. To begin these conversations, encourage patients to assess their risk by completing a brief questionnaire available at kidneymi.org/kidneyquiz.
Let's unite in our efforts to raise awareness, advocate for early detection, and foster collaborative relationships with patients. By embracing proactive measures and promoting informed dialogue, we can make significant strides in combating the silent threat of CKD and improving patient outcomes. 2028 Liaisons Welcomed at Annual Dinner and Planning Meeting
|
A great time was had by all on Nov. 19 when the Class of 2027 Liaisons, along with MOA employee Terry Trombley, welcomed the newly selected Liaisons for the Class of 2028 to the Annual Liaison Dinner and Planning Meeting.
The meeting serves as an opportunity for the Liaisons from all three MSUCOM campuses to come together, share a meal, get to know each other, be apprised of their responsibilities as Liaisons, and begin plans for the events that will be planned and sponsored by the MOA Liaison Committee over the coming year.
These events will include campus meet and greets, MOA advocacy luncheons, a "Get to Know Your MOA" luncheon, and a comprehensive "Student Track" event that is completely planned and executed by the students at the MOA Spring Conference.
We congratulate the Class of 2027 for a job well done as they begin the process of passing their knowledge on to the incoming Liaisons, and we welcome the Class of 2028.
