The Michigan Osteopathic Political Action Committee (MOPAC) fights to elect and re-elect pro-physician candidates through direct contributions, voter education and targeted political activism. As a physician, your time and resources are limited. MOPAC is the best resource for you to learn who supports the osteopathic profession and how you can help elect candidates that represents you and your patients.

Fantastic February

If you aren’t a winter person February can be less than fantastic. It can be dreary and cold and feel like it lasts forever. One way to get through the rest of winter is to move forward with some enjoyable and achievable goals to get over the winter hump. If a beach goal to the Caribbean isn’t working out this year, then think about a learning goal to acquire new knowledge and skills for yourself or your staff.

Advancing the Patient Experience of Care

PTI’s CME six-part series called Advancing the Patient Experience of Care started on January 22. This first CME activity was called The Impact of Effective Communication on the patient experience of care and explored the Quintuple Aim, the Chronic Care Model, the four essential parts of communication, elements of effective communication, and the use of feedback to improve the patient experience of care. Although Part One of the series has been completed, it is not too late to sign up for the remaining five activities.

Community Health Worker Sustainability

CHWs are an essential part of a health care, social services, or community-based organization team. They bring knowledge and skills that enhance the quality and experience of their patients’/clients’ care. How are they best integrated into those teams? What sources are available to reimburse the services they provide to sustain their role within an organization or provider practice?

Community Health Worker Program

If you don’t have a Community Health Worker (CHW) on your team, you might want to think about it. Within the community you serve, your staff encounter many individuals who have social determinants of health (SDOH) needs, in addition to vaccination hesitancy, preventive care needs, chronic health conditions, behavior health issues, and/or substance abuse disorders. As you think about how to address these needs and risks, a CHW can be an integral part of your team. Read More

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS PROMOTE

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Consider adding one to your practice!

A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who can be the bridge to a healthier community. CHWs act as advocates and liaisons to connect individuals and families to health care and social services. They have a strong connection to the community in which they serve, often sharing the same ethnicity, race, language, socioeconomic characteristics, culture, spiritual beliefs, and/or life experiences as found in their community.

Some of the roles of a CHW are to support and organize community outreach activities, work with state and local social services organizations, build trust within the community with access to culturally competent and language-appropriate services, navigate the health care system, and connect with the community resources. In addition, they link with health care providers who are culturally and linguistically competent, support the behavioral health of individuals by coaching and using motivational interviewing techniques, promote appropriate health screenings and healthy lifestyles to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities, as well as promote understanding and self-management of chronic conditions.

The Practice Transformation Institute (PTI), a training and education organization and Michigan's leading provider of CME and IACET-accredited experiential learning programs, is an approved provider of Community Health Worker training by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The CHW program provides the skills and health care knowledge necessary for CHWs to function effectively in a variety of community settings, such as assisted living facilities, behavioral health organizations, community-focused and faith-based organizations, health insurance companies, public health departments, hospitals, clinics, senior centers, physician practices, and more.

PTI’s program includes all core competencies identified by the state of Michigan and the National C3 Council (formerly called the CHW Core Consensus (C3) Project) and provides an expanded focus on communication, generational differences, motivational interviewing, action planning, behavioral health, substance use disorders, healthy lifestyles, screening and prevention, and common chronic conditions. Throughout the curriculum, learners will gain an understanding of the social determinants of health (SDOH), with attention given to confidentiality, health inequities and disparities, health literacy, and cultural humility and competency. The program offers IACET CEUs that are recognized by a wide range of organizations, including professional organizations, regulatory boards, corporations, and universities.
