June 2017

Welcome to the Graduation Edition of the MSS E-News. We have lots of information about where our high school grads are heading to college, as well as some very impressive accomplishments to share.
The MSS Class of 2013 is heading all over the place! 

Mount St. Mary's is welcoming  Dominic Nield , majoring in political science, and
Bobby Laudani, currently undeclared major. Other local (relatively) colleges where are grads will be attending include Anna Eyler at Hood, majoring in Chemistry, Cecilia Bosche, heading to Towson to major in Occupational Therapy and Athena Fream , majoring in Special Education at University of Maryland . Alex Dumm is attending Catholic University with a major in Political Science.  

I n Virginia, Anthony Beasley is going to study Law and Film at George Mason University , Leah Morgan will be Pre-Med at the College of William and Mary and Carrie Reaver will be studying Pre-Med and playing soccer at Longwood University

Both Megan McGee and Sarah Szulkalski  will be at York College of Pennsylvania , majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Nursing, respectively. Also in Pennsylvania, we have Paige Orner planning to study Cognitive Science with a minor in Computer Science at the University of Pennsylvania, Makenzie Kirby attending Duquesne University as a Pharmacy major, and Brendan McCormick at Slippery Rock University majoring in Park and Resource Management. Other Pennsylvania schools welcoming our grads include Misericordia University, where Anna Marie Fostik plans to study Pediatric Occupational Therapy and Psychology and Alvernia University, where Grace Santos will be majoring in Athletic Training. 

Even further afield, we have Robert Walker majoring in Physics at Georgia Institute of Technology and Brad Reaver studying Business at the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee

The West Coast will welcome Josephine Isaacson as a BioChemistry major at California Polytechnic State University and Sean Vetri in the Honors Program at Gonzaga University in Washington State. We couldn't be prouder of these young people as they embark on their college experiences.

And now the halls of Mother Seton are quiet as both students and teachers take a break to enjoy the summer holiday. But much work will still be done over the summer, from some much needed renovations (yes, the tables that I sat at decades ago in the cafeteria are being replaced, and there will be new floors in the gym and cafeteria as well!) to getting the new Chromebook cart ready for the fall.

Congratulations to our newest MSS alumni. The Class of 2017 will be heading out to nine different high schools-  Catoctin-Thurmont, MD, Francis Scott Key-Union Bridge, MD, Governor Thomas Johnson- Frederick, MD, St. John's Catholic Prep- Frederick, MD, Mount Saint Joseph- Baltimore, MD, St. Maria Goretti- Hagerstown, MD,  Fairfield High- Fairfield, PA, Gettysburg High- Gettysburg, PA, and Delone Catholic- McSherrystown, PA

Academic Merit Scholarships were received by the following:

Sean Reaver '07

Sean Reaver (MSS Class of 2007), a 2016 graduate of the Naval Academy and a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corp, was in Quantico for the past 6 months and is now stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Paige Orner '13

Paige Orner (MSS Class of 2013) graduated as Valedictorian (#1 out of 318 students) from Waynesboro Area High School. Paige will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. She chose to major in Cognitive Behavior because of a book she read in her MSS fifth-grade book club with Mrs. Monacelli and Mrs. Kuykendall. 

Paige also received the following a wards during high school:
Distinguished Honor Roll (all four years of high school)
Placed with Maxima Cum Laude in the National Latin Examination (2015)
1st place at TSA regionals for Children's Story, 2nd place for Essays on Technology (2015)
1st place at TSA regionals for Safety Illustration, 3rd place for Children's story and 4th for Essays on Technology & Music Production (2017)

Leah Morgan '13

Leah Morgan (MSS Class of 2013) was the Salutatorian at St. Maria Goretti High School as well as being named one of the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Distinctive Scholars. Well done, Leah!
Carrie Reaver '13

As Catoctin High School National Honor Society's liaison, Carrie Reaver (MSS Class of 2013) organized students to collect hygiene items, as well as clothing and toys to benefit those in need at Seton Center. She then delivered the collection to Seton Center and helped to fill shelves for those in need. Now that is putting faith into action! Awesome job, Carrie!

Maya Hand '14

Maya Hand (MSS Class of 2014) and a rising senior at St. Timothy's in Stevenson, MD, has been working hard and it shows. She was one of only 5 juniors in the state of Maryland to be awarded the Princeton Alumni Award for her academic, extracurricular and community achievements. In addition, Maya has earned medals as St. Timothy's top scholar in Mandarin Chinese and Biology as well as receiving St. Timothy's award for academic achievement as well as "sincerity, creative imagination, generous understanding of others and love of life." And if that isn't enough, Maya received the Coach's Award for Varsity Cross Country and will be spending her second summer interning in The Dr. Gahlmann Lab at UVA studying nanoscale microscopy methods for 3D super-resolution imaging. Wow! When do you sleep, Maya?

Quinn Alley '16 & Isabella Alley '15

The Alley family has a lot to be proud of this month: Quinn Alley (MSS Class of 2016) was selected as the Outstanding Student of the Month for May by Catoctin High School. His Spanish teacher nominated him, and after lauding his academic work in glowing terms, stated "Quinn is also a young man of character. He is always respectful during class. It is truly a pleasure to teach him..."  

Isabella (MSS Class of 2015) received Honorable Mention for the All-County Field Hockey team. This year, she was the only underclassman on Varsity and she also made First Team All-Conference. Congratulations, Quinn and Isabella!
Luke Szukalski '16

In other Class of 2016 news, Luke Szukalski made the All-County Boys Tennis Team. Luke, a rising sophomore at St. Maria Goretti, had an impressive 9-2 record at No. 1 Singles. Good work, Luke!

Class of 2015 Comes Back for Reunion

Member of the Class of 2015 came back to MSS for the Seniors & Sophomores Reunion. Even though classmates are spread out once they graduate, this class used technology to include Madison Wahl, a classmate that now lives in Hawaii. 

The Seniors & Sophomores Reunion is a new event that we created this year. It was so well received, we plan to continue it each year.

Upcoming Alumni Events
10th Annual 'Angels Above' Alumni Golf Tournament-Oct. 6

Looking for an awesome golf tournament that supports a great cause? Mark your calendars for October 6 and join us at Mountain View Golf Club in Fairfield to support the Jack and Shirley Little Scholarship Fund at MSS.

To date, the Little family has raised over $90,000 in scholarships for our students. Since this is the 10th year, we are looking to make this the biggest and best event yet! 

Perhaps when you attended MSS, your family received tuition assistance. This is a perfect way to pay it forward!  Sponsorship and Corporate Sponsorships are available. And of course, we want you to come and play some golf with a group of amazing friends!
