September 2019

The halls of Mother Seton School are once again filled with the sounds of kids, from the littlest pre-schoolers to the oh-so-grown-up 8th graders. I'm guessing St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is looking down from above smiling to see the fruits of her labor still going strong 209 years after she founded her original school in the Emmitsburg Valley.

The school year is off to a great start, and while we are focused on our current students, we never want to forget to celebrate the achievements and milestones of our former students!

Fifty plus years of music!

Back in 1968, at the tender age of 13, Steve Myers (MSS 1970) formed his first band, ironically named "The Web" due to his fear of spiders. With brother Mike (MSS 1969) on keyboards and Mike Rosensteel (MSS 1971) on drums, he covered the Beatles, The Who, The Dave Clark 5, and many of the other classic rock acts of the time. That early band evolved over the years into a procession of bands, the current iteration of which is 5.5 Men. The band, based in Thurmont, can be heard at local venues, including wineries, carnivals, and pubs. It's pretty remarkable to follow your passion for over 50 years, and we salute you, Steve! Steve has been married to Brenda for almost 38 years, and they have 2 children, Chris and Courtney, as well as 5 grandchildren: Colby, Lily, Brody, Jake and Calvin. Steve works at Volvo Powertrain/Mack Truck in Hagerstown and is an ordained minister.

Update on the Bell Brothers- Dylan (MSS 2010)
and Ryan (MSS 2013)

The Bell brothers have been busy since they left Mother Seton!

Dylan (MSS 2010) graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a major in Aerospace engineering in 2018 and is currently working for NASA at the Goddard Space Center. He is the consulting engineer on several projects including a "deep space" satellite and has a special interest in propulsion and controls for space craft. In his spare (!) time, he recently earned a 2nd Degree Black Belt in karate.

Ryan (MSS 2013) is currently a senior at UMD College Park with a double major in history and philosophy and a minor in political science. Not only is he a Dean's List and Honor Society member, but he participates in a global fellowship program which will allow him the opportunity to intern at one of the federal agencies such as State Department or the FBI. He plans to attend law school and join the military as well.

Ryan and Dylan Bell
Lisa Bell, Dylan and Ryan's mom, generously credits MSS in helping her sons excel in their academic endeavors. The MSS education "made all the difference to help reinforce a 'can do' attitude and spiritual mindset that helped our sons in so many ways." She added that their education at Mother Seton "successfully prepared them academically for high school and beyond" and that the great school spirit and expectations of the teachers and staff were "key to reinforcing important fundamentals regarding conduct and morals." That's certainly what we try to do every day at MSS, and how wonderful to hear that we are succeeding! Thank you, Lisa, and congratulations to Dylan and Ryan on their achievements.
We prayerfully remember the following
Mary Ott Flickinger

We prayerfully remember Mary Ott Flickinger, who passed away at her home on August 25, 2019, at age 71. Mary was a graduate of the Class of 1962. She is survived by three children, including Melissa Wetzel (MSS 1984), Timothy Wetzel, and Roy "Sam" Smith III.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
