A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT / CEO

A Note from the President/CEO

There are no appropriate words that can adequately address the most recent school shootings, but a lack of words should not lead us to silence. The conversations in my home after the news broke about the Parkland shootings, were focused on the safety of my grandchild, and buying him a bulletproof vest to wear to school. This is where we are.   It is my hope that the multiple layers of this problem are finally addressed, sooner than later, before another student dies. I don't have all of the answers, and there are so many different opinions, but we need to have civil discourse, and come together to solve this problem. Sooner than later. This. Is. Not. Okay. As a Chamber, last year we sponsored two classes that were taught by the City of Sebastian COPE Officers, "Violence in the Workplace/Active Shooter". We will offer this again if there is interest from our members to learn how to respond to these sad situations. Feed back from the business people that did attend the workshops was very positive. Let us know if there is a continued interest.

We welcome our newest staff member to the Chamber, Ms. Patti Williams. There's nothing like a fresh perspective, and Patti has been fully immersed in the Visitor Center for a couple of weeks, meeting all of our seasonal visitors and becoming acquainted with all things "Sebastian". Since she's new to the area, her questions and comments remind us old timers how very special the Sebastian River area is. We look forward to Patti being a part of our team, and we are highly anticipating the birth of the next Chamber baby, Britney will be out only for a while, as she builds her family to four! We wish everybody the best in their new roles.

Pelican Island Wildlife Festival and the Shrimp Fest and Craft Beer Hulabaloo are on tap for March. The Wildlife Festival commemorates the creation of the First National Wildlife Refuge in our country, and it's a very unique festival, focused on the environment. The Chamber is always there, and it's an opportunity for you to promote your business in our booth, while learning about all of the natural resources in our area. The Shrimp Fest brings out all of the foodies in our area, and raises money for all of the youth sports organizations in North County. Volunteer driven, this group will be at Riverview Park in Sebastian for their third event. Something new and different! The Chamber will be there too, so if you can't join us for the Wildlife Festival, sign up for the ShrimpFest!

We also have two Concerts in the Park in March, and the 19th year of Concerts remains very popular with the community. Check out the Concert dates here.   And many thanks go out to our sponsors who support this fun quality of life program for the community and the City of Sebastian for their support as well .

Our Chamber networking activities in March provide opportunities to network, link up with the business community and learn about what's happening! Our breakfast is sponsored by Mikamar Dog Training, here at the Chamber office and our lunch will be very informative. Kashi is our sponsor and we will learn about all of their recent activities. Eric Flowers, M.S., lieutenant, Public Affairs with the Indian River County Sheriff's Department will bring us up to date on law enforcement activities in the county. Our Business and Pleasure is across the street from the Chamber at the new office of State Farm, Eric Ponce. And we have two ribbon cutting ceremonies coming up at LaPorte Farms and at the new location for Ted Pankiewicz's not for profit "For the Love of Paws". The Sebastian River Area is hopping right into spring!
Have a prosperous month!

This past month, I had the pleasure of making my way out to the Sebastian Municipal Airport to get to know the Old Farts Flying Club "OFFC" where more than 40 pilots flew in with their private and vintage planes to have lunch at Sebastian Golf Restaurant, mingle, and tour the Airport facility. What a unique and fun experience! We provided the group with our Visitors Guides to get them more acquainted with the area.

See you at one of the many networking opportunities this month!

MARCH TOURISM SPOTLIGHT
Sebastian River Art Club
1245 Main Street
Sebastian, FL 32958

Presentation to Kathleen Hill, Administrations Director of the Lagoon Estuary Council of Indian River County, left to right, Kathleen Hill, SRAC President Judy Burgarella, and SRAC Treasurer Vicky Lada.

Celebrating over 80 years, the Sebastian River Art Club was formed in 1937 by a group of local artists, including Rosalee Taylor Hume, whose bronze statue graces the water's edge in Riverview Park. Throughout the Club's 80 years the Club has aggressively pursued ways in which they could support and enhance their community through their art, and create more awareness of the art and artists in their town. Through our club dues, sales of art, donations and a myriad of creative ways we use our art resources to raise funds, the Club has supported many local and regional organizations, charities, and individuals. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, part of our mission is to "give back," such as our Rosalee Taylor Hume Scholarship Fund, and the "Little Gems" Fund which supports folks in need at Christmastime through the Food Pantry. In 2017, the Club gave away two $1,000 scholarships to a local high school students pursuing a career in the arts, and $1,500 to the Food Pantry. Many other organizations are also supported by us yearly. A list of our philanthropic efforts can be found on our website.

Our Clubhouse, "The Art Center," at 1245 Main Street in Sebastian is our 'jewel,' a place where we can go for camaraderie, artistic inspiration, classes and workshops, a place to showcase our art and have art shows, lectures and other events. Part of the building is used by other non-profits, including the Sebastian Quilt Club, also a very philanthropic organization that graces our walls with their beautiful quilts during our yearly "Beautiful Lagoon Art Show," which is coming up March 17-18.

The Sebastian River Art Club is a friendly group of people who eagerly share their talents, tips and tricks. The Club is open for members and to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and most Saturdays, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Art classes are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and are in a variety of mediums. Information about schedules and teachers can also be found on the website. Special workshops are also conducted periodically on select Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Club's signature show, the 2nd Annual "Beautiful Lagoon Fine Art Show" is March 17-18 in the Art Center, and is a celebration of our beloved Lagoon, with proceeds benefiting the Lagoon Estuary Council of Indian River County. Showcasing over 100 Lagoon-themed works including paintings, sculpture, photographs, woodworking, jewelry, glass and more, our first show in 2017 was a great success, and it is predicted to be bigger and better this year. An opening reception will be held Saturday, March 17th 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with awards ceremony at 6:00 pm. The show runs through Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and all is free and open to the public. Delicious refreshments created by our "artist-chefs" will be served.

Artists in all mediums are welcome to join the Club, and general membership is only $35. Our monthly meetings run from September through May, and are held the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am. Monthly "Art By The River" fine art shows in Riverside Park run from November to April, and artists will compete for ribbons in our special Juried Show there February 17th, with a rain date of February 18th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Artists have many exhibit opportunities year-round through our "Art Around Town public art program, and also are entitled to have a section in the website for their paintings, biography and a head shot at no cost.

To learn more about the Sebastian River Art Club, please stop in the Art Center any time during normal operating hours, or visit our website at www.sebastianriverartclub.com, or call the Club at 772-571-6632, or 772-581-8281.
