The Joint Commission survey will take place before the end of March 2022.
This regulatory survey is unannounced and consists of a team of up to 12 surveyors that come on site (Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt Zion) for a week. All inpatient, ambulatory and procedural areas will be surveyed to assure we are compliant with regulations related to patient safety, infection control and environment of care. This is an opportunity to showcase our best practices, as well as to seek out recommendations from the survey team in areas where opportunity is identified. The surveyors employ a tracer methodology when they interview staff and providers, perform medical record review and carefully observe the space in which we provide care. The survey provides a good opportunity to remind ourselves about best practices and policies intended to assure patient safety. Please review these general survey tips. Thank you in advance for your active engagement with the survey team when they arrive in March.
|
|
Other general tips
- Sign all notes in a timely fashion
- Avoid verbal orders except for in an emergency
- Reconcile a patient’s home medication list during each patient encounter in the inpatient and outpatient setting
- Wear your name badge above the waist
- Try to answer any surveyor question in a succinct fashion and allow the surveyors to ask for additional details

APeX Experience Project Survey complete by March 30th for chance to win a Starbucks gift card
Why? Research indicates that the electronic health record (EHR) is one factor contributing to clinician & care provider burnout. Supporting UCSF Health’s vision and commitment to be the best place to work and provide care, the newly formed APeX Experience Project Team is focusing on EHR satisfaction and opportunities for improvement.
What? UCSF has partnered with KLAS Research in an effort to improve your experience with APeX. By partnering with KLAS, UCSF is able to survey, evaluate and compare the results to other organizations across the country. The quantitative and qualitative data will inform stakeholders and provide information on EHR (APeX) satisfaction, as well as identify opportunities for improvement that will guide change in the future. Consider completing this survey to make your APEX experience and feedback count. You may use your mobile device and scan the above QR code to complete the survey as well.

This months Coding Tip: For Ambulatory APPs
Encounters are billed based on time or medical decision making. Use the approach which will result in a higher code to ensure the scope of your work if fully captured.
If you are billing based on time, then time spent reviewing patient records on the same day as the visit is billable and should be included in your total visit time. You must use the smartphrase .timespent in your note and the wand in the level of service calculator. Both functions are required. See images to the right.
