  • IN THE NEWS

 Dear CLSA Members,

As we approach National Surveyors Week (March 19-26), I want to take a moment to reflect on the important role that surveyors play in our society. Our profession is responsible for measuring and mapping the world around us, from the buildings we work in to the roads we drive on. We are the guardians of property boundaries, ensuring that land ownership is properly established and maintained.

I also want to take this opportunity to recognize those members who have come before us and made CLSA the outstanding organization it is today. Their dedication and hard work have paved the way for us to continue advancing our profession and advocating for its importance in the broader community.

During this special week, let us celebrate our profession and the vital role that we play in shaping our world. Let us also remember those who have paved the way for us and continue to inspire us to uphold the highest standards of excellence in our work.

Thank you for your commitment to our profession and to CLSA, and please remember to attend our joint conference with the Nevada Association of Land Surveyors (NALS) March 25-28.

Kevin Hills, PLS

President, CLSA

WHERE IN CA IS THIS?

The February “Where in CA is This?” had several winners, some of whom wish to remain anonymous. Steve Martin chimed in with a correct answer based on local knowledge and Josiah Tiner, LsiT, from MBS Land Surveys in San Luis Obispo figured it out using Google Earth. Bill Tuck, City of Oceanside Land Surveyor and former photo identifier, provided this pair of photos from the end of Oceanside Pier, as well as the December photo from Mt. San Jacinto. To those who thought it might be Oceanside but did not see the once prominent smokestack from the SDG&E powerplant to the south in Carlsbad, much of the entire powerplant structure has been demolished.

Try to identify the location of this month’s photo. Please tell me how you identified the location. Submit answers to: Rob McMillan.

GPS on Benchmarks update for California March 2023

California is making progress on the goal of having a GPS observed benchmark in each 10km by 10km hexagon where benchmarks exist. As of this writing, we are at 42% complete on the 10km goals and 38% complete on the 2km goals. Caltrans District 2, District 11, and others have recently submitted several so those numbers are expected to rise by 1% or so when the GPSonBMs map updates.

In the monthly NGS OPUS Share email, California was the top submitter for February, with Caltrans submitting the most (see graphic).

There is about 6 months left in the GPSonBMs for the Transformation Tool program, so now is the time to complete those priority benchmarks in your City, County, District, or corner of the State.

During the February NGS webinar (featuring California’s Philip Melcher, Steve Martin, and Dana Caccamise), NGS previewed a tool to identify large gaps in GPSonBMs coverage. One such gap was along I-80 from Sacramento to Reno (see yellow Priority A and blue Priority B hexagons in the graphic below).

Dana Caccamise issued a challenge to surveyors to collect some GPSonBMs data on their way to the CLSA/NALS conference March 25-28. Note that many of these stations were included in Height Modernization surveys in the early 2000’s and need only 1 more observation to complete the 10km hexagon.
