John M. Templeton was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and one of the most generous philanthropists in history, giving away over $1 billion to charitable causes. The successful investor and banker who created the Templeton Growth Fund in 1954 was described in 1999 by
Money magazine as "the greatest global stock picker of the century." Templeton attributed much of his success to his ability to maintain an elevated mood, avoid anxiety, and stay disciplined. In spire of enormous wealth, he lived modestly, driving his own car, and never flying first class. He established the John Templeton Foundation and the Templeton Prize for Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities. For this philanthropic efforts, he was made a Knight Bachelor in the U.K. in 1987, becoming Sir John Templeton.
