Amberley Village Police to Host

Resident Crime Prevention Events

In response to the recent increase in break-ins, Amberley Village Police Department and Administration are teaming up to host a series of community events to empower residents and boost crime prevention.

These events will feature updates on recent crimes in the Village, booths to highlight services available to residents, and the rollout of a new Senior Safety Program (see below). Multiple sessions will be offered to accommodate busy schedules, and to ensure all interested residents can learn how to be proactive in Village crime prevention. The event series will also provide opportunities to deepen the strong relationship between residents and Amberley Village officers.

Stay tuned for more details, and plan to join us in May!

Tell Us How You'd Like to Hear From Us!

Amberley Village is currently reassessing how best to reach residents with important information regarding development, security and senior services. Please take a moment to let us know how you'd like to be contacted. Be sure that you are willing to share your personal information for email, phone and texting options. Stay tuned for additional information regarding updating communications options for residents based on your feedback!

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Cost-Saving Culture: Equipment Loan from Mt. Healthy Allows for Winter Pothole Repairs

Amberley Village Maintenance Crews were spotted mid-February filling potholes along Galbraith and Ridge, as well as a number of residential streets where potholes were forming. What residents may not realize, however, is that repairs during cold weather have previously been too challenging to handle internally, so they have either been contracted or have had to wait until spring.

This year, an equipment loan from Mt. Healthy changed all that. A device called a hot box was loaned to the Village and enabled Maintenance Crews to apply hot asphalt to portions of the roadway, which more effectively fill the potholes than the cold patch remedy used in the spring.

Norwood Lateral Closures to Impact Commuters; ODOT Map App Assists with Planning

Portions of Norwood Lateral will be closed for several months beginning in March according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Amberley Village residents are advised to plan ahead for commutes that involve this stretch of roadway. Detours to accommodate the closures are also expected to impact commuters as traffic is diverted to I-71, I-75 and Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway. Resources to assist in planning your commute include the OHGO website & app, which can be accessed via the link below. OHGO is a service of the Ohio Department of Transportation, and offers real-time traffic updates, personalized route notifications, and allows drivers to view live traffic cameras and get accurate delay times.

Avoid Scams as Income Tax Day Approaches

As income tax due day draws near, residents are reminded to be wary of potential scams. Last year, the IRS received 294,138 complaints of reported identity theft, the second most in its history. A recent scam trend has callers pretend to be working for a government agency, sometimes the IRS, and confuse the victim by saying they’re already experiencing identity theft in order to encourage them to share personal information. Residents are reminded that the IRS will NEVER ask you for personal information electronically or over the phone. The IRS also never asks for credit card numbers over the phone. If you are a victim of a scam or identity theft, contact Detective James Drake at the AVPD at 513-531-2040.

Late Winter/Early Spring is Ideal

for Tree Trimming

Most arborists recommend trimming or pruning trees during late winter/early spring while still dormant. Not only is it easier to prune without foliage in the way, it's also healthier for the tree. Experts also recommend prune flowering trees after they’ve already bloomed, however, saplings should not be pruned for the first year.

Professionals suggest identifying the branch collar, an enlarged area around the base of a branch, and cut just beyond it. Pruning in this area stimulates tissue to grow over and seal the wound. Also note that if you can hang a hat on a branch stub, the branch collar cannot grow over it, so you know it's too long.

Other tips include using proper equipment, and understanding the types of trees in your yard to ensure you're handling each appropriately, as different species require different types of pruning. For many residents, utilizing a certified arborist can take the guesswork out of pruning and ensure a healthier tree in the long run, which can even save on costs down the road.

Be Mindful of Coyotes During Mating Season

Like many municipalities nearby, Amberley Village is home to a population of coyotes that are currently in the throes of mating season, and it's not uncommon to hear their calls in their search for a mate. They live in families which can be very territorial, and become very aggressive in April and May when their pups are born and the hunt for food and defense of territory take precedence.

Early spring finds coyotes near homes at all times of day; not just at night. This is because their pups need to be fed, and people provide an abundance of food. Did you know that a bird feeder is the number one invitation for coyotes to visit your home? Coyotes prey upon animals feeding on food left out for them by well-meaning residents.

The safest way for humans to interact with coyotes is to keep their distance. This includes refraining from feeding other wild animals, especially during mating season.
