Milestones & Memories...

The History of Marine's Flower Shop

In April 1966, Marine opened a new department on Orange Street called "The Garden Shop", still located in the same building today. The shop sold landscaping and gardening materials, perennials and annuals, trees, lawn equipment, outdoor furniture, and barbecue supplies. At the time, it was the first complete garden shop on Nantucket.

Later in the same year, the company opened The Flower and Garden Shop at 9 Petticoat Lane (now Centre Street), which served as the down-town branch of the parent location, The Garden Shop. This made it easier for people to order floral arrangements in town, and get them delivered to the shop.

In 1967, The Flower Shop relocated into Nantucket's first "Shopping Mall" at 57 Main Street. Though it wasn't a real shopping mall, Marine occupied 2/3 buildings; the second store being The Mill Shop. The goal was to give the customer the opportunity to browse both stores at once. In 1969, The Flower Shop moved into the Congdon and Coleman office at 50 Main, pictured above.

In 1975, The Flower Shop moved back to Petticoat Row, where it stayed until 1982. The Flower Shop moved back on Orange Street until the final relocation.

The Flower Shop moved to 5 Bayberry Ct. in the later 90's, where Appliance Service is located today. Marine flew fresh flowers over to the island two times a week, for many years. The Flower Shop closed in 2014.

Store Improvements and Merchandising Updates!
Hardware Expansion

During the current Hardware remodel project, a doorway from the original 1944 building was uncovered after removing the wall that formerly held the nuts, screws, bolts, etc.

It has been reopened to provide easier customer movement to the expanded Hardware area. The door lines up with a direct path to the Lumber Counter and Paint Department.

New Hillman fixtures have been installed for nuts, screws, bolts, fasteners etc.

Home and Garden Remerchandising

The Yeti cooler and tumbler assortment has been re-merchandised in the pass-through from Garden to Housewares. The relocation of microwaves, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, under-counter refrigerators has been complete.

Home Furnishings Updates

Before entering the showroom from the parking lot, look at the new window displays and gather inspiration as you walk in.

As the seasons change, our windows will bring you the latest trends and inspiration for your living spaces!

On the back of the new window display is a new collection of lamps and wall decor ready to shop. More lamps are available in the showroom.

Major Appliance Service

The Appliance Service Department signs were installed. This was the final step to complete renovation and relocation.

No Strings Attached!

March is a great month for indoor projects. I recently strolled through the store to check out the redesign progress, my first impressions was that each department looks brighter, showcasing the products to their best advantage. The carpet samples and window treatment options in Home Furnishings are expansive and readily accessible. With so many new products and building materials available, I wondered how a homeowner makes educated decisions when decorating a new home or simply refreshing a room.

To learn more, I reached out to Design and Sales Consultant, Dana Jungherr, and Michael Flanagan, Home Furnishings Manager, for advice. Their extensive knowledge and how they deconstruct the thinking behind each design element is impressive. Here’s how our conversations went:

Battery Powered Chainsaws

Chainsaws have long been great tools for many, from lumberjacks to homeowners, by making quick work of felling trees, cutting firewood, tree pruning, and more. They’ve come a long way from the cranky, oily beasts they once were to the clean, reliable tools they are today. I remember some of the earlier saws as being hard to start, loud, smelly, and difficult to maintain. Modern gas powered saws have solved most of these problems and made ownership fairly easy. What could be better? The answer for many of us is the battery powered chainsaw. There’s no gas/oil mixing, no exhaust fumes, far less noise, and no tune-ups after a winter in storage.

Most of the major power tool manufacturers offer battery powered chainsaws in different models and sizes. Saws with 14” to 18” bars can do some pretty heavy tree work, and smaller saws such as the Milwaukee M12 Hatchet pruning saw are great for trimming tree limbs and cutting smaller caliper trees. I have several times cleared my driveway of fallen trees after Nantucket winds, turning the loss of trees into stacks of firewood.

These saws are light in weight and easy to operate, but it must always be remembered that great care must be taken during use. They can easily cut much more than trees! Two hands on the saw are a must, in my opinion, even when the saw is small enough and light enough to be held in one. And always know in advance where a tree will fall or a limb will drop.

Are there other uses? Ice sculpting? Carving bears from tree stumps? I’ve seen house framers using chainsaws for cutting out window openings, but I’m not going to recommend that!
