Your Top FIVE to THRIVE

March 2024

#1 Emerging Leaders Grant Recipient Featured on WAOW

Braysen Hesse, a 7th Grader at John Muir Middle School, was featured on television station WAOW Wednesday, March 6 for being the only student who was awarded an Emerging Leaders School Grant.

He was awarded $100 to build a raised garden area where the food grown will be used in the cafeteria for healthier food options and given to students who may not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Braysen also applied for the grant on his own.

He got to take a little break during his schedule to be interviewed by morning reporter James Sadowski at the school. Emerging Leaders Board Chairperson, Jill Jochimsen, was also interviewed for the segment and got the chance to meet Braysen.

The project will start this Spring. Braysen is currently price-checking seeds and other supplies for the project to get it started.

The grant awards up to $500 to applicants within Marathon County School Districts. Not only can teachers and school officials apply, but students and coaches can too, as well as 501(c)(3) organizations associated with a K-12 team or classroom. The grant will open again this Fall.

#4 Retire United Packs, Donates Dinner Kits to The Neighbors' Place

Last month, our Retire United group gathered at The Neighbors’ Place to make one-pot dinner kits including everything you need for a comforting and hearty bean soup.

In total,125 kits were made.

The recipe Retire United included with the kit suggested fresh add-ins that can be found in The Market at The Neighbors’ Place. Market volunteers eagerly distributed the dinner kits to guests in just one day!

The Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline for Marathon County received 137 addiction calls in 2023. The pie graph above breaks it down.

The number of unmet needs for housing increased by 23 percent from 2022-2023. This means, for various reasons, that a greater percentage of callers seeking housing assistance are not getting the help they need, compared to the previous year.

In Marathon County, there has also been a slight increase in unmet needs for substance use, compared to the previous year.
