If This Was Preventative, Why Am I Receiving a Bill?

The Value & Cost of Annual Preventive Services

Preventative care is an essential element in your health and well-being. While preventative care visits are often covered by your medical insurance plan, you might still find yourself receiving a bill and asking why you're being charged for care if it's "preventative." Let's talk about what that means.

Preventative care is defined as "Routine health care that includes screenings, check-ups, and patient counseling to prevent illnesses, disease, or other health problems." It's often care that comes before a set of symptoms or a diagnosis.

What's covered at no additional charge to you varies depending on your insurance plan and carrier. Let's talk about some different types of care and how they might be covered or billed:

Annual Preventive Physical Exams

Annual comprehensive physical examinations provide valuable insights into overall health and help identify any underlying health concerns. Annual exams are covered at 100% on most medical plans. However, it’s important to keep in mind that if new symptoms or health concerns are discussed during the visit, these are billable services.

Early Detection of Conditions

Screening tests, such as mammograms for breast cancer and colonoscopies for colorectal cancer, enable early detection and intervention, which in turn results in better outcomes. Basic screenings are generally covered at 100% for specific age groups when ordered for preventive reasons. However, whenever screenings are ordered because of symptoms or a follow-up for an existing condition (diagnostic) these are billable services.

Immunizations

Vaccinations are essential for preventing infectious diseases that pose a threat to public health. Many, though not all, immunizations are covered at 100% for specific age groups on most plans.

Labs and Radiology Services

There is a list of common preventive labs and radiology services that are covered at 100% on medical plans Affordable Care Act preventive programHowever, not all services ordered for preventive reasons are on that list. For example, Vitamin D and Thyroid tests are billable services.

For more examples of preventive services that may be billable to you, read this article: Ouch. That 'Free' Annual Checkup Might Cost You. Here's Why.

Maintaining a proactive approach to your health helps reduce the risk of preventable diseases and allows for critical, early detection of threats to your well-being.

March marks the observance of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder of the importance of prioritizing preventive care for overall health and well-being. This is an opportune time to take proactive steps toward safeguarding your health and reducing the risk of diseases!

Understanding the difference between preventive and non-preventive services can help you know in advance what services will be covered at 100% versus what may be billed to you. In the end, taking the opportunity with preventative care is highly recommended, even if costs are incurred. Embracing preventive care allows for early detection, intervention, and the promotion of optimal health!

DID YOU KNOW:

Colonoscopy Musings

Is your doctor pressing you to undergo the dreaded colonoscopy because the data is clear: it can save your life? Dread no further—here's the scoop from someone who did the deed recently.

Colonoscopy has become a household word and is by far the most recommended preventative screening for folks who've attained age 45.  National Cancer Institute reports that roughly 70% of Americans will choose to undergo this screening once the birthday party is over. However, only about 40% go willingly for the free preventative screening. What does that mean? Well, about 30% of those unwilling partakers end up going later when they have symptoms requiring a diagnostic colonoscopy (not free) to detect polyps and hopefully rule out colorectal cancer.

I'm not afraid to share my own experience as I must admit, after undergoing the whole ordeal, I did feel an enormous sense of relief in knowing what was (or wasn't) going on in there. As I worked my way to the point of accepting that this screening must be done, I did my best to talk myself out of it for about a year after I turned 50. I mean, seriously, the very thought of such an invasion into a closely guarded area of my body was not to be taken lightly! I did have symptoms by that point, therefore I had the screening as diagnostic and had to pay for it according to my health plan terms.

If you're like me and humor is a way to relax a little, here are some suggestions you can use to join in "full monte" with millions of Americans who undergo this American ritual rite of passage into their golden years.

  1. Knowing how to pronounce gastroenterology is not mandatory, but this is the type of doctor you want to consult with for this procedure.
  2. Find a doctor who has a sense of humor and would be happy to discuss the details of the procedure with you.
  3. Consider starting the conversation like Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, "I'd like to ass you a few questions?"
  4. Enjoy the great opportunity to take a two or three-day fast before you begin the cleanse.

You may hear from friends that the worst part is "The Cleanse" the day before you go in for the procedure.  In my experience, I knew that a little break from food would benefit me anyway, so I began my own liquid fasting a couple of days prior to the recommended "official cleanse" time frame. Now, with that being said, once I started with the "ClenPiq" the night before my procedure, I found it best to be near a toilet because that stuff got right down to the business of cleaning out everything I've had remaining back to the 3rd grade!

There are many brands to help you prepare for a clean bowel. See this list linked here.

In the end, honestly, it really wasn't as bad as I had imagined it would be. The bottom line is to put your pride aside; remember, the Gastro Doc will most likely not shout out recognition if they see you in the grocery store!

Be brave and schedule this most important screening as a preventative and FREE option before you show any symptoms and have to pay for it as a diagnostic test.

Be well!
