Director's Corner
Empowerment Through Collective Support:
Launching SENG Community Groups
By Dr. Sylvia Bagley

As I embark on my third year serving on SENG’s board, I am grateful for the opportunity to focus my impact specifically on the area that first brought me to SENG: its support groups.
In my previous Director’s Corners (see posts from January 12, 2022 and May 1, 2023), I shared briefly about discovering SENG through an SMPG (SENG Model Parent Group) in my area. My three twice-exceptional kids all needed additional support, and I was curious to learn what SENG had to offer.
The moment I started reading James Webb et al.’s A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children (2007), I was underlining and folding pages like crazy. Each chapter confirmed that I’d made the right choice in taking a chance on this new group. While attending weekly discussion circles with other parents – guided by patient, informed, supportive co-facilitators – I understood more about the many special considerations that exist when raising gifted and/or twice-exceptional kids. Intensities are real; emotions matter (a lot); friendships are hard; executive functioning skills are crucial; finding a school setting where your child can thrive and be understood is possible, but it takes time and knowledge of what to look for.

The 2024 Women's History Month theme established by The National Women's History Alliance is titled: "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” Gifted women and girls often face a unique set of social, emotional, and academic hurdles that can impact their development and self-esteem. Societal expectations and stereotypes may lead to underestimation of their abilities and pressure to conform to traditional roles, which may stifle potential.
SENG is privileged to have so many gifted women, partners, authors, and members; and, we want to acknowledge and celebrate their contributions, resilience, and brilliance. May we all continue to uplift the gifted women and girls in our lives and continue illuminating the path toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
Please enjoy this list of archived articles that highlight our unique differences and advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion.

Shaping Brilliance: The Art of Growing Giftedness
Imagine giftedness not as a static treasure we're born with, but as a piece of art waiting to be created. This is the heart of the Talent Development Perspective—a vibrant approach that sees every individual as a unique block of potential, ready to be sculpted into something extraordinary. It's about nurturing the seed of talent with the right mix of challenge, support, and timing, transforming it into a masterpiece over time.
Join Dr. Worrell on an inspiring journey that redefines what it means to be gifted. He'll weave the story of his own path from a childhood filled with potential in the bustling streets of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to his influential role as a Distinguished Professor and former president of the American Psychological Association. By exploring the core principles of the talent development megamodel, Dr. Worrell will shed light on the crucial ingredients of ability, innovative teaching, persistent effort, and the serendipity of chance that contribute to the journey from curious child to renowned expert. This narrative is not just about acknowledging talent—it's a call to actively and artfully shape it.

This book explores the issues of Twice Exceptional (2e) children who have ADHD, ASD, or both. In chapters that focus on giftedness, ADHD, and ASD, the book using relevant research, illustrates the issues relevant to giftedness itself, ADHD as a general mental health disorder, and ASD as a mental health disorder. Using anecdotes and examples, these chapters explore how ADHD and ASD manifest in gifted children, how gifted children and their parents may experience being 2e and how these 2e children differ in presentation from average IQ children. Then, in chapters that focus on cognitive, creative, emotional, social, and moral aspects, how gifted children with ADHD and ASD are affected is explored for a variety of topics, along with specific examples and suggestions for parents and teachers. In a final chapter, issues of assessment for parents, teachers and professionals are delineated. Resources for parents are also included.
Ticket sales benefit the SENG Scholarship Fund.
