Advice From Your Boss...

My boss told me yesterday, " Ken, you shouldn't dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want.

But when I turned up at the office today in Ghostbuster's clothing, she said I was fired.

Chamber Selects 2016 Scholarship Recipient

The Park Hills - Leadington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is excited to announce that the second recipient of the Chamber Scholarship is, 2016 Central High School Graduate, Taylor Jones!

Jones, daughter of Timothy & Julie Jones of Park Hills, will receive $500 per semester, for up to four consecutive semesters, to assist with the costs of earning her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education at Mineral Area College.

Jones has been actively working toward her career goals throughout high school by taking many dual credit classes, maintaining a 3.9 GPA, and carrying the rank of 4th in her class.  She has also been involved in her church youth group, participated in WEB, an afterschool bible club for kids, and has experience working with toddlers through babysitting and childcare.

Jones believes that God called her to be an early childhood education major at a very young age.  She reminisces pretending to be a teacher to her dolls and even her friends.  "Working with children and seeing them learn brings a smile to my face and happiness to my heart," says Jones.  It is her dream to impact the lives of children, in hopes that they will look back and remember that even though they were young, she not only educated them, but cared for them, and taught them that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.  Jones hopes to contribute to the local community by helping to build the young minds of the next generation, giving them the skills to succeed and to help our community growing.

As a recipient of the Park Hills - Leadington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, Jones will receive her first $500 installment of funds to assist with the fall classes at Mineral Area College.  Three more $500 installments will be available to Jones; one for each consecutive semester she attends Mineral Area College, Central Methodist University, or Missouri Baptist University.  She will receive a total of $2,000 in financial aid toward her degree.  After receiving her associate's degree, Jones plans to continue her education at a four-year college in hopes of earning her bachelor's and master's degrees.

Finally, one of the recipient requirements of the scholarship outlines the importance of being an active member of the community in which you live by insisting that the scholarship recipient attends and/or volunteers at one Chamber of Commerce Investor Meeting and one Chamber Sponsored Event such as the Annual Firecracker Run or Sweetheart Trivia Night.  We look forward to having Taylor join us at an investor meeting and help at one of our Chamber sponsored events.  This will be a great opportunity for Chamber Investors and local members of the community to congratulate her on an outstanding high school academic record and continuing education plan!

10 Reasons Why Humor is a Key to Success at Work

By: Jacquelyn Smith, Forbes Staff.
"A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done." - Dwight D. Eisenhower

Tasteful humor is a key to success at work, but there's a good chance your co-workers aren't cracking jokes or packaging information with wit on a regular basis-and your office could probably stand to have a little more fun.

"Humor, by its nature, tends to have an edge to it, so people typically tone it down at work," says Laura Vanderkam, author of What the Most Successful People Do at Work(Portfolio, 2013), and What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast (Portfolio, 2012). "It's hard to do well and easy to do badly. Plus, we all have a tendency to take ourselves way too seriously."

Michael Kerr, an international business speaker, president of Humor at Work, and author of The Humor Advantage: Why Some Businesses are Laughing all the Way to the Bank (Dec. 2013), says the amount or type of humor you'll find in any given workplace depends almost entirely on the culture. "In workplaces that encourage people to be themselves-that are less hierarchical and more innovative-people tend to be more open with their humor," he says. "Even people who aren't always comfortable sharing their humor tend to do so in more relaxed environments where the use of humor becomes second nature with everyone's style."

Science Says These Three Things About Having a Beard at Work

By: Thomas Popomaronis - Founder & CEO, Opia Talk

To shave, or not to shave? That is the question.

Over the past few years, men have been seriously bucking the clean-shaven-for-work rule (thanks, Harry's and Dollar Shave Club). If you're not sure whether it's time for you to follow suit, though, science might help you make a final call.

1. Age, Dominance, and Aggression

In studies, people consistently have rated men with facial hair as appearing more dominant, aggressive, and seasoned in years. Researchers suspect this result has to do with biological messages related to the natural hormone testosterone. This chemical increases in men with sexual maturity, so facial hair essentially communicates that you've been around the block enough times to handle problems as they come with some degree of smarts. Testosterone also is essential for muscle development and makes people more willing to fight. In the Stone Age, facial hair thus sent the message you were strong and eager enough to protect yourself and any other human beings you might have valued. Today, translated into the business world, it sends the message you'll fight strategically for your business, are a go-getter, and won't quit.

2. Confidence

Scientists still aren't precisely sure why men have facial hair at all, but one theory is that a beard sends a message of confidence. Just as women today still grab each other's hair in a tussle, beards can be a handicap in that a man can grab an opponent's facial hair to gain the physical upper hand. A man who maintains a beard in the business environment thus can be interpreted as saying he's not afraid of competitors and can beat them even with whatever handicaps he has, or that he's not afraid of risks.
