A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT / CEO
|
A Note from the President/CEO
May begins with the 27th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament at the beautifully renovated Sebastian Municipal Golf Course. There are still opportunities to join us at the Cinco de Mayo, Nacho Your Average Golf Tournament. You can find everything you
need!
The Chamber committees have been busy! If you have an interest in becoming more involved, you may find one of these committee would be a good fit! Here's a short update on what they are working on:
Tourism Committee - this committee is made of tourism related businesses. They meet quarterly, receive updates from our Tourism Director Nicole Holbrook, network amongst each other, and bring new ideas to the table to support and promote tourism. The Committee met this month and you can read about their very lively discussions in Nicole's column, further in this newsletter.
Ambassadors - Our Ambassadors serve as the backbone of the Chamber and volunteer their time and efforts in supporting Chamber activities, and nurturing new members. They are everywhere. The Ambassadors also meet on a quarterly basis for lunch and they are led by our Membership Director, Vicki Wild. This is a great way to meet new members, and stay active with the Chamber.
Legislative/Government Affairs Committee - This committee is working on an issues paper, and researching legislative and government issues that may have an impact on the business community. The Committee also is responsible for Candidates Forums during the election cycle, including elections for Sebastian City Council and Indian River County Commission races.
Health and Wellness Committee - this is our newest committee, comprised of businesses that are related to the health and wellness community. This year the committee has taken on a monumental task of bringing an Opioid Summit to the general public. The committee members are working diligently to facilitate a discussion in the community about the Opioid/Prescription crises, how it is impacting our community, and linking resources and information to the general public. This event will be held in September.
As you can see, the Chamber is multi-faceted in its programs and services. If you want more information about any of these committees, give us a call!
The month of May is a busy one! We start with a Chamber breakfast at Riverview Coffee and Tea, with Leslie and Dave Wayment at their new business. Lunch at Capt. Hiram's features MN Worldwide as our lunch sponsor, and our guest speaker is Fl. State Representative Erin Grall, District 54. In order to insure a seat, you will want to make reservations for this lunch. The Business and Pleasure is hosted this month at the Sebastian Gym and Fitness, located on Sebastian Blvd. There's plenty of opportunities to get connected.
In closing, we want to recognize that Joe Griffin, Sebastian City Manager, is moving on to his next adventure. Joe has been a very dedicated public servant, and has worked on many levels to help Sebastian grow and prosper. The Chamber wishes him well, and thanks him for his years of service!
Have a great weekend, look up in the sky all weekend, there's a lot of interesting things going on with the Air Show!
Beth Mitchell

Carole Jean Jordan serves as the Tax Collector in Indian River County. She was first elected in November 2008, and is the first woman to serve in this constitutional office.
Jordan focused her first years in office on increasing customer satisfaction through updating technology, eliminating the automated answering system, and preparing for seamless implementation of state mandated full Driver Licenses services. While continuing to emphasize efficient, cost effective, one-stop-shop customer service, Jordan continues to reduce the budget and annually returns almost three million dollars to the County Taxing Districts.
Her commitment to improvement and growth has been instrumental in bringing additional service opportunities to the Tax Collectors office, allowing residents to save time and accomplish more in one visit. Jordan was the first Tax Collector in Florida to offer Concealed Weapon Permit Applications as part of the pilot program in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture. Additionally, local Tax Collector offices now offer birth certificate services for those born in Florida, and, in the near future, will begin offering TSA Pre-Check and TWIC State Cards at the West Office.
One-stop-shopping currently includes Driver Licenses, Birth Certificates, SunPass Transponders, Concealed Weapon Applications and Renewals, Title and Registrations for vehicles, mobile homes, and vessels, Local Business Tax, Hunting and Fishing Licenses, and Tangible and Personal Property Tax collection.

Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum
www.melfisher.com
Nichole Johanson has been working and managing the Sebastian Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum for the past 15 years, but you could say she's been a part of the family business since the day she was born. Although she was just 1 year old when her grandfather Mel Fisher made history with the discovery of the famed Spanish galleon, The Atocha, all of the stories still fascinate her to this day.
Mel Fisher was a dreamer, a visionary, a legend and most importantly the World's Greatest Treasure Hunter. He got his start in treasure hunting salvaging off of the 1715 Fleet Shipwrecks right here on the Treasure Coast in the early 60's. With the winters being too rough to salvage up here, he decided to move his operation south to search for a very wealthy shipwreck called the "Nuestra Senora de Atocha." After many personal losses, struggles with debt, ridicule, doubt, and 16 years of searching, the $450 million-dollar treasure cache or "Atocha Mother Lode," was finally unveiled on the ocean floor. The immensity of the Atocha's treasure was staggering. What was only a dream instantly became an undeniable reality. He did what many have not - he realized his dream during his lifetime.
Even though the Fisher Family sold their admiralty claims of the 1715 Fleet Shipwrecks on the Treasure Coast in 2009, they still maintain 100% ownership and salvage rights of the Atocha down in Key West. Every day Mel insisted, "Today's the Day"! His mantra continues to inspire their team and family to search for the missing $200 million in treasures from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and her sister ship the Santa Margarita as well as another shipwreck they are in search of off of Cape Canaveral which they have named "The Lost Merchant." They have some new cutting-edge equipment that we affectionately call the "Dolores," named after Mel's wife, Nichole's grandmother, and the family's and crew's anchor through every storm. They are confident that their HAUV (Hybrid Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) will help them discover the treasures they are searching for.
We encourage everyone and anyone to visit the local treasure museum located in Sebastian. If you haven't been yet, then "Today's the Day!" When you enter the museum, you will witness a spectacular collection of Spanish artifacts. They have displayed a little bit of everything such as rigging, medical tools, cooking utensils, and weaponry to some of the most unique items you will ever see as well as glistening gold chains, silver coins and bullion. You will be granted the opportunity to feel the weight of a solid gold bar recovered from the ocean depths of the Atocha wreck site. A visit to the Gift Shop affords you the distinct opportunity to own an authentic "piece of history", unique gold escudos or silver reales in fine jewelry settings, museum quality recreations as well as other nautical gifts. They have products for every size wallet, from $1-$35K and everything in between.
We welcome you to discover the fun, romance, and adventure of Mel Fisher's Treasures.
