Self-Driving Microscopes Could Lead to Material Innovations

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory are teaching microscopes to drive discoveries with an intuitive algorithm, developed at the lab’s Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, that could guide breakthroughs in new materials for energy technologies, sensing and computing. Non-invasive imaging of atomic arrangement at the sub-angstrom scale in 2-D hybrid perovskites

Materials scientists aim to identify the atomic arrangement of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid perovskites (RPP) using non-invasive imaging; however, the process is challenging due to the insulating nature and softness of the organic layers. In a new report now published in Science Advances, Mykola Telychko, Shayan Edaltmanesh, and Kai Leng, and a team of scientists in physics, chemistry, and materials at the National University of Singapore, and Palacky University Czech Republic, demonstrated sub-angstrom resolution imaging of soft organic layers and inorganic frameworks in a two-dimensional lead-halide perovskite crystal. Read more.

Technologists’ Forum News

The Technologists’ Forum is free to join and provides a community for those who work in the technical areas of microscopy sample preparation and imaging or anyone interested in expanding their skills.

Join us for the Tech Forum Member’s Meeting at M&M 2022 on August 1st from 3:30-4:30pm to learn more about our events and how to become more involved.

2022 M&M Tech Forum Sessions

The Tech Forum will join forces with the B07 [3D Volume Electron Microscopy in Biology Research] and B10 [Development, Challenges and Biomedical Applications of Tissue Clearing, Expansion Microscopy and Volumetric Imaging] session organizers to provide the techniques portion of the research presentations.

X30 - Image Data Analysis Software Review [B10 complimentary session]

   X31 - 3D SEM Techniques [B07 complimentary session]

X32 - Tissue Clearing Tips & Techniques [B10 complimentary session]

Certified Electron Microscopy Technologist [CEMT]

The Microscopy Society of America (MSA) provides the only certification for technologists in biological transmission electron microscopy available in the US. Certification can be important in determining job classification, salary level, and potential for advancement or promotion. Individuals with the requisite educational and/or occupational qualifications can attain certification by completing an application and passing both written and practical examinations.

The next registration deadline is August 16, 2022. For additional information and registration materials, go to the CEMT Certification Program link.
