• Friday, May 10^th 6:00 pm, Seaside Community Society Planning Movie Night: “Wonka” at Costin Hall

City of Nanaimo

• May is Invasive Plant Removal Month. There are a variety of work parties planned throughout the month, and the drop zone is back where citizens can drop off their invasive plants for safe disposal. The Drop Zone is held on Saturday, June 1^st 10 am-2 pm at Bowen Park. www.nanaimo.ca/parks-recreation-culture/parks-events/InvasivePlantRemovalMonth
• Family Fishing Day takes place on Saturday, May 12^th, 10 am-3 pm at Colliery Dam Park. There will be a trout release at 12 pm followed by musical entertainment at 1 pm. Free fun for the whole family. www.nanaimo.ca/parks-recreation-culture/parks-events/family-fishing-challenge
• Lions Free Swims are back this season happening every Saturday from April 27^th until June 8^th from 1-1:30 pm at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. (No session on June 15^th).

Regional District of Nanaimo

• National Youth Week from May 1^st to May 7^th. Youth are a vital part of each community and contribute meaningful experiences through their participation in a wide variety of programs. getinvolved.rdn.ca/rec-connect.

Wildfire Community Awareness Day

May 4^th is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day which is a national campaign that encourages citizens to take actions that increase their home, neighbourhood and community’s resilience to wildfire. Learn more at firesmartcanada.ca/ about how to protect your home and your neighbourhood. 

Lantzville Fire Rescue Receives STSS Accreditation

Congratulations to Lantzville Fire Rescue for receiving the Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation on April 6, 2024 (through April 6, 2029). This accreditation allows homes within 8 km of the accredited Fire Hall and within 5 km of a recognized water supply point to receive a cost reduction in their fire insurance rates from most insurers in Canada. Fire Underwriters Survey will distribute this accreditation to the insurance corporations on behalf of the District of Lantzville and Lantzville Fire Rescue.

The District of Lantzville Receives the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

For the sixth straight year, the District of Lantzville has received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association. Congratulations to the District of Lantzville’s Financial Services team for their continued diligence and accuracy in their work. 

Emergency Preparedness Week

May 5^th to 11^th is Emergency Preparedness Week and an opportunity to create or revisit an emergency plan. Apply For Your Homeowner Grant  

You may qualify for a homeowner grant. The homeowner grant reduces the amount of property taxes you pay each year on your principal residence. Eligibility requirements for all available grants can be found at: www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant or by phone at 1.888.355.2700.

Accessibility Advisory Committee

The District of Lantzville is now accepting applications for ONE (1) volunteer member at-large to serve on the Accessibility Advisory Statutory Committee for a term   expiring December 31, 2024. The purpose of the Accessibility Advisory Statutory Committee is to support accessibility planning in Lantzville. Cut the Broom When It Is Blooming!

The District of Lantzville has partnered with the Broombusters Invasive Plant Society again this year to assist in controlling the alien invasive plant Scotch broom in our community. The Broombusting season has just begun and Broombusters could use your help. If you have an hour or two, they can loan you some loppers for you to cut on your own or join them for some weekly community cuts. Help protect our environment from this invasive, alien plant and enjoy some time with fellow residents. Watch for on- line announcements and signs in your neighbourhood with dates and times. Contact Sharon at sahokas@shaw.ca for further details, to borrow loppers, or add your name to the email list. Did You Know?

As per Bylaw 185, outdoor open air burning (fire piles on the ground), and incinerator fires are prohibited from April 16^th to October 14^th.
