Report: Many STL Immigrants are Underemployed
Finding immigrant professionals to fill unfilled jobs
Photos by Wayne Crosslin/International Institute
Recently, more than 60 gathered at the International Institute to hear the initial research findings about immigrant underemployment in St. Louis. This report is an important contribution to the growing literature on the foreign-born population in the St. Louis metropolitan region. This is the first report that uses micro data to provide a detailed demographic analysis of occupational outcomes for immigrants. The study was funded by the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank Trustee under the direction of the International Institute (click here for Executive Summary).

Pictured above, Professor Onesimo Sandoval, principal investigator, shares surprising data with the audience. Below, panel participants included (from left) Blake Hamilton, VP for Programs at IISTL; Eesa Sahib, Iraqi engineer; Susan Gobbo, former physical therapist and founder of St. Louis' International Spouse Meet Up Group; Molly Hyland of Commerce Bank; and Sandoval.
