MAY 2018
President's Letter

Dear Fabulous KGC Friends,

T.S. Eliot mused that "April is the cruelest month...", but April was anything but cruel to KGC!

Our April 18th Benefit was a smashing success. From the stunning centerpieces and tablescapes to the delicious and whimsical menu to our fantastic speaker, it was a magical moment to savor, cherish and remember. Thank you to our chairs, Sharon Hayes and Kirsten Rider, to the very creative and supportive committee, our Angels and to all of you for your generous support.

A very special thank you to Mario Nievera for his wonderful presentation teeming with eye-candy slides and great ideas -- and a few inside scoops, too! Mario was extremely generous and very supportive of KGC's mission. He has greatly helped our bottom line, enabling us to be generous with our philanthropic donations this Spring, and helping us to continue to do great things next year.

It will come as no surprise to you that we've received calls from other GCA clubs about booking Mario! I just talked to the New Canaan GC's Program Chair, Carrie Corcoran, about Mario. Amazingly, she attended St. Mary's and knew our Program Chair's husband! Small world, indeed!

Now to the April 26th's KPD Board Meeting!

After tabling the matter for a month, the Kenilworth Park District approved KGC's Storch Fund Proposal for a bluestone path. Kudos to Wendy Yamada for preparing the proposal, further research and getting this approved at the April 26th meeting. Merci beaucoup to Helen Balch for being at that meeting and providing additional support. By the way, the path will cost about $27,000 and end the "stones clogging the fountain" problem.

Fast Forward to April 29th at the GCA Annual Meeting!

KGC received the Founders Fund Award for its Misericordia Garden! Wow! Congratulations to Mary Lois Hakewill, who tenaciously kept her eye on the prize for the past two years. Committee members Joan Dodson and Barbi McDonough were a great help and deserve great recognition, too. It was a thrill to be part of this team and I loved every minute of working with Mary Lois, Joan and Barb. And congratulations to KGC for its support and encouragement. What a wonderful win for a wonderful cause!

On that note, I was humbled to represent KGC at the Annual Meeting and accept the Founders Fund award on KGC's behalf. Representing our Club at so many events has been one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. I asked GCA if Mary Lois could accept the Founders Fund award instead, and they said that GCA policy is that the President must accept the award and represent her club.

Shelley Galloway was one of three GCA Annual Meeting Official Photographers. She worked very hard and did Zone XI and KGC proud! Thank you, Shelley.

Another wonderful part of the Annual Meeting was seeing Shelley Galloway's floral exhibit front and center. Although I was disappointed in the judging outcome, her arrangement was the first, front and center, as one entered the show. I heard many "ooooohhhs" and "aaaaaahhhs" from those viewing it. Shelley received a Third Place ribbon among the stiffest competition that I've ever seen. Brava, Shelley!

I had the privilege of making a short presentation to the Presidents' Communications Workshop on April 28th about media interviews. The workshop was extremely well run by GCA Communications Chair Beth Brumbaugh (Akron GC) who was very complimentary of our newsletter, website, PR and Bulletin submissions. Thank you, Chris Wiedrich, for making KGC look so good!!!

KGC was also mentioned this during the GCA Annual Meeting for seconding Roy Diblik for GCA Honorary Membership as well as in the Spring GCA Bulletin as part of a short news clip about the Enid A. Haupt Garden at the Smithsonian.

Looking ahead, we will celebrate these successes and many, many more at our Annual Meeting on May 16th. You should have received your "snail mail" invitation. Thank you, Leslie North, for the pretty design and to Kelly Chestnut for taking r.s.v.p's. Please respond by May 11th!

We will be approving the budget, slate and philanthropy projects, plus passing the gavel. We will hear reports, celebrate accomplishments, distribute many awards and enjoy camaraderie and lunch.

We welcomed two new members in April: Sarah Barden, whose sister, Libby Donnell, is President of Ladue Garden Club, and the extraordinary Stephanie Lindemann, whom many us know very well from her years at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Welcome!!

Just a gentle reminder that dues are due by June 1, 2018.

I look forward to celebrating you and your accomplishments at our May 16th Annual Meeting!

Always,

WHAT'S NEW

Big Day for KGC at the GCA Annual Meeting!

GCA Annual Meeting in San Francisco

"Oh the places you'll go!" -- Dr Seuss

Lenore, Shelley & I are just back from the GCA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. We are chock full of news, beautiful events & lasting memories. Of course, we would be lying if we said that the announcement of our Founders Fund win was not the highlight of the convention for us. It's a feather in our GCA cap, but it's also wonderful news for Misericordia. I spoke to the Director of Developmental Training, the Master Gardener & the Development Officer at Mis this morning & all they can say is "Thank you! Thank you!". It will be wonderful to see the progress of the new therapeutic garden on campus. I invite all of you to go with me to Misericordia over the spring & summer to see the garden take shape. With our $30,000 Founders Fund prize plus our own club's $10,000 donation, the funding of the garden is well underway.

Our own talented KGC treasure, Shelley Galloway, did not disappoint at the flower show. Her beautiful arrangement won honorable mention against very stiff competition. The floral & fauna that California has at their fingertips this time of year is simply mind boggling. Everywhere you looked was lush & bursting with color. The Hort competition was glorious to see.
The business meeting was spread out over two mornings. We heard fabulous speakers. The two keynote speakers, Thomas Woltz & Jonathan Foley, were nothing short of genius. You can learn more about them on the "What's Happening" page of the GCA website. The annual reports for each zone were fun & interesting to hear. You would be proud to know all that the GCA clubs are accomplishing across America.

I took an optional trip the day before the conference started to private gardens in Hillsborough, CA. I have included a couple of photos, but my little iPhone cannot do these gardens justice. You know that you're in high cotton when the landscape designer & gardening staff show you around the grounds of the estate! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience, followed by a lovely luncheon at the Burlingame Country Club.

On Friday night there was an opening cocktail party. The second day started with breakfast & a business meeting followed by breakout sessions where we learned more about the nominating process for GCA board positions and gained useful tips for public speaking. Then we had a few hours "off" to explore San Francisco on our own. I ran into quite a few familiar faces in Gumps! Our Zone dinner that night was held at the beautiful and historic Francisca Club.

The next day, we attended the business meeting where the Founders Fund winner was announced. We had a selection of different docent led tours in the afternoon. I chose a tour through the Presidio highlighting Andy Goldsworthy art in the park. The weather was picture perfect & the tour was marvelous. That night was the awards banquet. After a full day, I was wondering if I could keep my eyes open until 10:00 p.m. (remember that's 12:00 Chicago time!) but the medalist winners were so inspirational that it was a delightful evening.   I urge you to go on the GCA website, again under "What's Happening" and you will find a list of the winners, their accomplishments & their acceptance remarks.

If you are invited to attend a GCA annual meeting, a Zone XI meeting, Sherley Meneice or NAL conferences, please consider attending. You will gain vast knowledge & a greater understanding of the advantages of association that GCA brings. It is exciting to be a member of GCA & all that it offers.

Forever Green a Forever Success!

April 19 dawned sunny and clear -- a beautiful day to celebrate all that is green and gorgeous.  Inside The Glen View Club, the mood was warm and festive.  Mario Nievera, FASLA, president of Nievera Williams Landscape Architecture, gave an insightful, humor-filled and engaging lecture on the roots of his interest in landscape design, including a peek at various North Shore properties that piqued his interest in particular.  While the event took its theme from his 2012 book,  Forever Green:  A Landscape Architect's Innovative Gardens Offer Environments to Love & Delight, the projects featured at the event were all completed post-publication.  The transformations of properties in Florida and New York, as well as a peek at this year's Kipp's Bay Showhouse terrace, were a real treat.

This fabulous arrangement by the Floral Committee greeted guests as they arrived.

FLORAL
In Floral News .....

Floral Committee Changes at GCA ...

Beginning July 1, 2018, the Floral Design Subcommittee will stand alone as a full GCA committee. As background, in 1988 the Flower Arranging Study Group (FASG) was created as a Flower Show subcommittee focused on studying national and international floral design techniques. Now thirty years later, it will have its own full committee status. This new structure is intended to simplify the flower show process, improve floral design education and provide expanded benefits to GCA's nearly 18,000 club members.
  • The new FLORAL DESIGN COMMITTEE, a full committee with 12 zone representatives, will provide floral design education, zone workshops, and enhanced resources for club members across the country.
  • The existing FLOWER SHOW COMMITTEE will focus its work and resources on clubs hosting flower shows.  Flower Show Committee members will read flower show schedules, evaluate flower shows, and collaborate with the Conservation, Floral Design, Garden History & Design, Horticulture, and Photography Committees.  Along with the Judging Committee, they will help integrate special exhibits into the flower show and judging experience. Clubs will be encouraged to "rethink" the value of flower shows as powerful educational and outreach tools.
  • With the formation of the Floral Design Committee, all 18,000 GCA club members will have a new benefit and resource - the GCA's quarterly publication, By Design.  Currently, By Design is available to club members who pay for a subscription. In the future, By Design will be published online and can be sent directly to an email inbox, just as other GCA publications.
  • Everyone who chooses to receive a digital copy of By Design via email will automatically be a member of the World Association of Floral Artists.  WAFA provides access to international flower shows, and their accompanying tours and workshops. For experienced floral designers, WAFA offers the camaraderie of exhibiting internationally.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography 101

Hey fellow Photo enthusiasts, are you a "slobby" photographer?  If you don't know what that means, you missed out on some helpful information imparted at our fun and educational Photo 101 Workshop held at the Chicago Botanic Garden.  Lou and Todd Nettelhorst of Nettelhorst Images, taught us the importance of SLBE or "slobby" photography.  https://nettelhorstimages.com  The key elements to remember in this learning method are as follows:

1.  Subject:  Decide on what your subject will be and make sure you get the right angle, light, and focus to highlight and tell the story of your subject.
2. Light:  Make light your friend, use it to enhance your image.  Pick the right time of day to convey your story; should it be the golden hour of dawn or dusk?  should it be a scene with overhead light casting strong shadows?  should it be overcast to get better color and detail? Consider backlight, sidelight or direct lighting to convey the story more clearly.
3. Background:  Choose your background to set off your subject effectively, don't use distracting background, move with your feet and work with your aperture to either blur the background or keep it in sharp focus.  Be careful not to include awkward juxtapositions unless they are part of your story.
4. Edges:  Make sure your edges are clean and free from awkward inclusions.  Give airspace to your subject unless you want to cut something off to make it more "edgy."

On Friday, April 13th, 17 lovely Zone XI ladies banded together in the Pullman Room of the CBG for the Photo 101 Workshop.  Inclement weather kept us inside the greenhouses for individualized shooting lessons with Lou and Todd.  Over lunch we loaded our new images and had an afternoon critique of our work of the day.  Lou and Todd were incredibly helpful in their morning info session and very patient in their critique.  We all came away inspired and informed and look forward to working with them again.  They hold online critique sessions and take photography field trips both near and far.  Look for more info from me on a Nettelhorst Pop Up Photo event coming to our area in the next few months.  Meanwhile check out their website.

Keep your cameras by your side and train your eyes to see the unusual in the usual that surrounds you daily.

Focus on your view of the world, find your personal photographic voice, be creative and be open to the world around as spring unfolds.    What you see, might be who you are.

Here is a sampling of images taken by Shelley Galloway in the Botanic Garden greenhouse.

Participants had two opportunities to go out and take photos that were later critiqued by Lou and Todd.

WARE GARDEN

"No Winter lasts forever; no Spring skips its turn!"
-- Hal Borland of the New York Times

As we wait for signs of Spring at the Ware Garden, committee members have been working behind the scenes to prepare for the upcoming season.

The committee will be meeting on Monday, April 30 from 9:00-11:00 for a Spring Clean-up. All are welcome to join us!

Good news!  Wendy Yamada and Lenore Macdonald submitted a proposal to the Kenilworth Park District for a grant from the Marguerite L. Storch Memorial Garden Fund to replace the gravel path with a new bluestone paver path .  At the April 26 meeting, the Park District approved the request.

In addition, Wendy Yamada will be sending a Sign-up Genius email to all members to schedule shifts to work at the Ware Garden this summer. Please remember to schedule your shift time. If you are unable to do so, you will be required to pay $50 for support of the Garden.

We all greatly appreciate your participation in making Ware Garden the most beautiful garden in Kenilworth. Working at the Ware is an important part of our club's history and we always have fun together. We look forward to seeing you!

                                                --Cathie Murphy & Wendy Yamada

CONSERVATION

As my role of committee chairman ends, I personally find myself in the process of "downsizing" and "decluttering" my home. Seems to be a hot topic as Boomers start looking for simpler living arrangements - less seems to be more desirable these days. While trying to figure out what to do with all the cords, keyboards and speakers that are building up in my basement, I came across a useful article about recycling electronics:   Living Green: A Guide to Recycling Electronics Both SWANCC and SWALCO provide opportunities for recycling - I encourage everyone to repurpose, donate or recycle before adding to landfills.

Perhaps you saw the great article in the New York Times:

Some a few summer tips from the EPA:

Lawn and Garden
A beautiful and healthy lawn is good for our environment. It can resist damage from weeds, disease, and insect pests.
Here are some tips to follow
  • Develop healthy soil. Make sure your soil has the right pH balance, key nutrients, and good texture.
  • Choose the right grass for your climate. If your area gets very little rain, don't plant a type of grass that needs a lot of water.
  • Longer is Better. Make sure the lawn mower blades are sharp. Grass that is slightly long makes a strong, healthy lawn with few pest problems. Weeds have a hard time taking root and growing when grass is around 2½ to 3½ inches for most types of grass.
  • Water Early. It is time to water if footprint impressions stay in the lawn and do not spring back. Water early in the morning and only for short periods for time so the soil may absorb the water. Longer grass has stronger roots and retains water better.
  • Use manual tools. Tools that don't require electric or gasoline engines are especially handy for small yards or small jobs.
Using and Storing Gasoline In the summer, lots of portable containers are used to store and transport fuels for lawnmowers, chainsaws and recreational vehicles. These portable containers can emit hydrocarbons; in addition, spills can leak into ground water. Here are some tips to follow to reduce these concerns:
  • Use Proper Containers Use only containers approved by a nationally recognized testing lab, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Store Carefully Store as little gasoline as possible and be certain to keep your gasoline container properly sealed.
  • Avoid Spills Avoid spilling gasoline on the ground, especially near wells. If a small spill occurs use kitty litter, saw dust or an absorbent towel to soak up the spill, then dispose of it properly
  • Dispose Properly Do not dispose of gasoline down the drain, into surface water, onto the ground, or in the trash.

Have a great summer!
--Ann Jones, Conservation Chair

OUTREACH

The pay-it-forward ideology has been in full swing this month, helping KGC Outreach lift a lot of spirits.  Shelley Galloway initiated a floral donation from Christ Church; Jeanne Daniel helped Shelley & the church floral group dismantle the arrangements, then recut, recondition & deliver the flowers to JourneyCare just in time to meet Tina Rice & Mary Lois Hakewill, who were delivering Mariano's flower donation (and then took time to create arrangements), thrilling JourneyCare's new Volunteer Supervisor, Deanna Lesht and the Christ Church floral group.  The attached thank you note and a photo sampling says it all.

More hands are welcome to join the Journey Care Flower Repurposing team!  KGC members collect floral donations from the Mariano store at Willow Road and I-294 and bring them to Journey Care, which is located behind the Target store on Willow Road.  Timing is flexible, and the work can be done by one or two people.  If you would like to shadow another member and see what this activity entails. contact Joan Dodson at joandodson@gmail.com or call 847/251-5119.

BEAUTIFICATION
A peek at the triangle garden at Ridge Rd. and Kenilworth Ave., maintained by Kenilworth's Clipper GC.

Notes from the last meeting:

Sign stanchions for the banners, where Kenilworth's events are advertised in North Park are being considered by the Park District. Their location, structure and size are part of that discussion.

Clippers Garden Club will take on the responsibility for the planning of the design and plant choices for the urns, fountain and planter boxes at the train station beginning in 2019 through 2020. Proposed, is for each Kenilworth garden club to rotate duties every two years.
