Submit a Paper to Present a Post-Deadline Poster!
- Post-deadline papers will be accepted via email only.
- DEADLINE: Tuesday, June 25, 2019 (midnight Pacific Time). No exceptions. Papers received after that deadline will not be considered.
- If accepted, your post-deadline paper will be presented as a poster on Monday, August 5, 2019 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.

New 3-D printed microscope promising for medical diagnostics in developing countries
Researchers have used 3-D printing to make an inexpensive and portable high-resolution microscope that is small and robust enough to use in the field or at the bedside. The high-resolution 3-D images provided by the instrument could potentially be used to detect diabetes, sickle cell disease, malaria and other diseases.

New Microscopy Technique Measures Activity of Deep Brain Regions
Since the 1990s, two-photon (2p) scanning microscopy has been the standard for brain imaging. Now, a novel microscopy technique developed by a team at the Rockefeller University, called hybrid multiplexed sculpted light microscopy (HyMS), will help build a more cohesive picture of the brain by allowing researchers to generate a picture of rapid cellular activity across multiple layers of brain tissue.

PMCx60 conferees: We are currently accepting poster submissions for presentation at PMCx60!
This is a great chance to expand your audience by presenting your research to peers and colleagues, and there is a cash prize for best poster, as voted on by the PMCx60 attendees.
Poster submission to the PMCx60 is very simple, just email your accepted M&M paper and the poster title to be printed in the PMCx60 program book to Meeting Chairperson Ethan Lawrence at [email protected].
The PMCx60 organizers are pleased to offer financial support to qualifying PMCx60 registrants.
All PMCx60 registrants are welcome to apply. The awards will be granted primarily based on financial need -- those who are unable to attend the PMCx60 without financial aid will be prioritized. More information can be found on the

. The deadline to apply is May 22, 2019, so make sure to submit your application soon!

MSA Student Bursary Program for M&M 2019
Once again, MSA is offering the student bursary program for the Microscopy & Microanalysis 2019 meeting. Students are encouraged to attend the annual meeting with the opportunity to offset some of the meeting costs. Many Student Council officers and members started their M&M experience as student bursars, which is a great opportunity to interact with peers and assist the society throughout the conference. If you would like to participate in the student bursary program for 2019 to help offset your meeting costs send an email to Student Council at the link below. Registration is now open.

MSA provides LAS support with Tour Speakers, Grants-in-Aid and Special Meeting grants. Details can be found at

Join a FIG!
FIGs are groups of scientists that practice or have interests in specific disciplines (currently 11) to which microscopy and microanalysis is applied. As an MSA member, you can join one or more. FIGs not only boost scientific understanding through knowledge sharing, but also provide opportunity to network with scientists who share common interests. FIGs may organize lunches, symposia or pre-meeting congresses at M&M. A complete list of FIGs is on MSA website. You may contact the FIG leader directly or attend a business meeting at M&M to learn more. Are you already a member of a FIG? Consider volunteering and make an impact! It's members are what makes FIGs successful. Talk to your FIG leader. Interested in starting a FIG? Start by reviewing the updated version of the FIG Guidelines and then contact me.
Three FIGs are organizing symposia in Portland: 3D Electron Microscopy in the Biological Sciences, Diagnostic & Biomedical Microscopy, Facilities and Operations Management, and Pharmaceuticals! Consider attending. More information will be available in a later MSA Update.
