Dear Friends,
The HVO community continues to thrive, with new projects underway in Paraguay, Haiti, Belize, Georgia, Nepal, and Tanzania. With nearly 100 active projects, our dedicated volunteers are making a strong impact both in person and online. So far this year, volunteers have completed more than 200 assignments—and nearly 50 more are scheduled before year’s end, with new assignments added regularly.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to check out the latest issue of the Volunteer Connection, our newsletter featuring updates on new initiatives and inspiring stories that highlight the power of collaboration across our global network. Thank you for joining the fight for global health!

I have always aspired to become a physician, driven by a deep passion for helping others and creating a positive impact through my work. My involvement with the HVO partnership began after having the privilege of being taught by HVO specialists at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in collaboration with Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).
During these sessions, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Jared Block. When I approached him to be my mentor, he wholeheartedly accepted. This mentorship, alongside the HVO collaboration, has been pivotal in advancing our diagnostic capabilities for complex hematologic malignancies. Through continuous sessions on morphology, flow cytometry, and case discussions, we have made significant progress.
My training through HVO and the ASH Visitor Training Program has significantly enhanced our team's understanding of morphology and flow cytometry interpretation. We’ve successfully integrated essential tests and techniques into daily practice, many of which were previously overlooked. These improvements have been incorporated into our operational guidelines, alongside the establishment of multidisciplinary tumour board meetings. Most importantly, we’ve worked to make flow cytometry a sustainable and reliable technique within our department despite navigating various setbacks.
Through ongoing training and collaboration with HVO, I am committed to ensuring that diagnostics for hematologic malignancies, particularly through hematopathology and flow cytometry, remain sustainable, reliable, and accessible in our institution.
